View Full Version : Mindless, the UnMindcrafter

With my last mindcrafters, i had found Mindcraft itself rather disappointing, to the point that i found bookcasting magic spells a much better use of my pp. So i decided to cut out mindcraft entirely. I had tried a Troll before, but Trolls drag so horribly that i suicided out of boredom. The drakeling worked out much better.

The early game was a bit tricky, but acid spit proved helpful until i got some equipment: an orcish knife and orcish spear, both of devastation. I decided to go with the knife this time, for the novelty and the style points. A shell armour turned out to be spider shell. From then on, it was smooth sailing. A wand of wonder was encountered pretty early, and most of my booze was used to recharge it. The orcish knife proved a sufficient weapon throughout, but i trained up an eternium flail of mayhem (6d4+15 dam) as backup for fiery places.

After suffering some equipment destruction, i generally switched to invisibility gear when a vortex came up and then spat at the thing until it dissipated.

The main challenge was, as usual, the ToEF - i _never_ acquired intrinsic fire resistance, so i went with two sources of equipped fire resist (one of them my crowning gift, Brannalbin's cloak, which also gave invisibility), bracers of regeneration and a blessed ring of ice. And some potions of extra healing. I decided for the cheap option against the wyrm: hurled a potion of confusion, then whipped out an expendable bow and my arrows of dragon slaying and punched it full of holes. Didn't want to waste too much of my healing reserves, so applied first aid on the way out whenever i suffered damage.

I found _three_ dragon lesser vaults in the deeper caverns of chaos - one blue, one black, one red. I didn't bother to take out any of them, the potential for equipment destruction was just too big, even with maxed alertness. The small fry would have been easy with invisibility and book-cast magic missiles, of course, but it would have required switching out of hack-and-slash mode.

Nothing else of note occured until CoC:50 - air and earth temples were trivial, the archmage was nailed with some arrows of slaying. The uselessness gift were Robes of Resistance, but i had entered the place with only one source of cold resist, so quickly got to 10 speed and was stuck at very low speeds for a long time. I got a surge of power on CoC_50 - Bracers of War, guarded by a named dark orc (?). I read my only scroll of familiar summoning to hopefully help against the guardian, but the greater fire elemental just flitted off into the unknown and promptly turned on me, so i whipped out my artefact invisibility cloak and snatched the bracers with its help, then confronted the chaos servant hordes (at ~30 speed). I had a lot of incoming attacks, but got good experience and my invisibility at least kept the artefact guardian and faithless pet off me. Bookcasted magic missiles eventually took them out. I meleed most of the balor with my crazy orc knife and reserved my slaying arrows for Fisti, and my potions of boost speed. Being speed-boosted, i didn't get much xp for the greater balor and never made level 50.

Emptied CoC_50 (stupidly swung my knife at an ochre jelly and instantly lost 3 off both to-hit and damage), picked up the anvil i found earlier and spent a few weeks of game time smithing my knife back up to roughly what it had always been like, got cleansed of all corruption via the unicorn quest, and left.

That is some mad luck on the last stretch. Robes of resistance AND bracers of war? The only shame is you barely got to enjoy them.

08/15 as an uncursed_string? Heh. My current one is "regular".

Go crazy orc knife! :p

Very nice story and victory, man! If you can do it with an unmindcrafter, you can do it with any class I guess.

mindcraft nets better results when used as a backup tactic. If you try to depend on it all the time.. like a spellcaster, you are going to be disapointed. But if you had played your mindcrafter like you did...but using mindcraft instead of book casting your game would have probably been a little easier.

But great victory anyway.

Thanks. It sure was fun.

Anyway, yes, actually using mindcraft would have enabled me to take out those dragon vaults fairly safely - just confuse them all, then hack them up. I'm seriously underwhelmed by the _damage_ mindcraft does, but confusion and eye of the mind are excellent; mental armour might be of some use, too, but mindcrafters aren't too bad at picking up weapon and shield skills, thus aren't badly in want of DV/PV. The UnMindcrafter was quite fun, but not much of a challenge. My naked female dwarvish wizard (i can't even get close to visualising the concept) was more interesting, but eventually met her demise by lack of vaults (sounds strange? not enough vaults -> level 28ish in the Earth Temple -> insufficient hitpoints -> one critical plus one heavy regular grue hit -> dead).

Even if you don't bookcast as general tactical tool, picking up a spell and book is still a good idea for a mindcrafter: spellcasting trains the mana stat, while mindcruft apparently trains nothing - neither mana nor willpower. Bleh.
