View Full Version : Dustin, the Dark Elf Wizard (First Win)!

I developed him as a melee wizard, so he had some pretty good DV throughout the game due to his skill with a spear and shield. I also found an eternium tower shield around mid-game, and that helped a lot.

Until I got the TotRR, throughout the entire game I used a stone spear that was boosted a LOT with scrolls of melee damage/accuracy, so I could take advantage of my Basher/Mighty Strike Tree (also, because I never found a really good spear)

I did obviously use starvation to boost my stats. I also a cursed potions of exchange to swap my high wil/dex scores with other stats (which ended up being learning and cha), then rebuilt up the wil/dex scores.

That resultant high learning score was AMAZING. After finding a few ball spells (and especially after the rift), Dustin was set with a huge, undying arsenal of everything.

You'll notice I didn't generate the rune-covered trident. This is because, after teleporting to the center of the Water Dragon's Lair, I arrived to find a hostile Giant Dragon Turtle on my right. Since my means of teleporting at the time included a helmet of teleportation and teleport control, I couldn't afford to wait until my next teleportitis proc. So, I cast Darkness. While I was trying to find the center in the darkness, I accidently attacked Shyssiryxius, which nixed that entire quest line. So, I cast darkness over her entire horde and looted it before escaping.

Midgame was stalled because it took forever (several hours) for me to find an Amulet of Life Saving. I started by gremlin bombing the bottom of the Unremarkable dungeon (no corruption flag there), but after I pickpocketed and killed over 2000 gremlins with no dice, I decided drastic measures were necessary.

I went back to the Water Dragon's Lair after the Rift, with 3 sources of water breathing (blessed pendant and 2 blessed rings), I decided to kill Shyssiryxius to free the place up for gremlin bombing. This was a very stupid idea because she almost killed me: In one turn she got me from 350 HP to 40, with SEVERAL breath attacks and several regular attacks (and I was on coward mode). Luckily, I ended up cornering her and acid balling her to death, a strategy that would then go on to work against EVERY OTHER BOSS IN THE GAME, except Andor Drakon of course. Killing Shyssiryxius made me immediately advance from 24 to 30. Risky, but it paid off, though the near-death was kinda scary.

Several more hours of gremlin bombing later, I got my ring of Djinni Summoning, and the time it took to get that also gave me a lot of potions of gain attributes, and ingredients thereof. So, that further explains my awesome stats... as well as luck. In my dive on the Blue Dragon Caves, I scored no less than 5 potions of gain attributes: an awesome find.

I was crowned before the ToEF, due to me pleasing the ratling with the Crown of Science (didn't need it, as I already had a high learning stat), the Moon Sickle, Big Punch, the Black Torc, The Sword of Nonnak, and the phial. In retrospect I should have used the Ancient Mummy Wrapping instead of the Moon Sickle: unlimited potions of raw chaos might have really helped with the finding of the amulet of life saving. My crowning gift was the Ring of Immunity, which was awesome to say the least.

A few blunders:

* The Ring of the Master Cat was short lived. Sometime after the Air Shrine, I noticed that one of my ring slots was empty, and that I had 6 wild cat kills in my records. I guess while I was acid balling the crap out of Yulgash, he summoned some wild cats. :( I was rather upset about that.

* When I first encountered Sharad-Waador, I mistook him for an enemy and started attacking him with spells. Had I killed him, I would have completely discounted myself for an ultra-ending. Luckily, standing by the stairwell and casting Calm Monster made me able to talk to him again! (!!!!) I wonder if that same strategy could be used on other NPCs accidently made hostile?

(note how both of the above blunders were kinda due to my aggressive playstyle)

Those three artifacts were apparently generated, but I never found them. Ah well, the club (it's club, not a spear, and as a wizard it takes twice the weapon marks and I really needed to develop that polearm skill), and the staff (I was a melee wizard) I probably wouldn't have used that much, but that +15 speed on the armor would have been REALLY NICE.

*I did find some seven league boots in the early levels of the CoC, like level 9, but they got ripped apart by a door trap almost immediately afterwards. I never found another pair.

Other than those blunders, the rest of the late game involved me using acid ball as my solution to everything. It was pretty fun. :) The emperor moloch was a lot easier than I thought it was. I forgot to bring a light source to the Andor Drakon fight (brought torches but no flint source), I had no problem cornering him in Very Aggressive stance and wrecking him with the overpowered trident. Thank you polearm skill!

Very nice on the first victory, and an Ultra at that! I got a chuckle at the fact that you never fired a single missile weapon. Just an fyi though, if you choose to do something like that again in the future, totally put an item with regenerative properties (such as a Ring of Regeneration) in your missile slot. For some reason, the game lets you benefit from regeneration there. I also like your absurd Charisma score. Honestly, with one that high, who needs weapons? You could just diplomacy Andor Drakon into being your servant, I say (heh).

Also, when you do dumps in the future, don't feel the need to post everything. Snip out useless items (missiles, random consumables, low-quality equipment that you picked up in D50, etc.) along with weapon skills that you never raised. It's also not a bad idea to snip out minor monsters where the killcount or the monster itself is not notable. Going through some of these processes you should be able to limit your dump to 3 or so posts at most.

Again, great victory! Now, try it with melee/missiles and no magic (a normal victory is plenty good!). It's satisfying going through D50 whilst not invincible and bashing or shooting your way through the hardest enemies in the game with a little bit of creativity... (of course, this is coming for the guy who also recently got his first ultra, 4th win, through the same strategy as you, Acid Ball spam!)
