XP gain out of nowhere?

I've just had something very odd happen. I'm playing a drakish merchant,
in the village dungeon. I was level 8, descended to the sixth floor, take
a step, and suddenly,



Congratulations! You advance to level 9. (more)


Huhwhat? I have no idea what I got XP from...I didn't kill anything,
I didn't disable anything, disarm, discombobulate, disembowel...
nothing! I just gained a level out of seemingly nowhere!

Does anyone know how or why this would happen?

Ah, okay. I wasn't aware monsters killed by traps you didn't create gave xp;

Monsters killed by door traps gives you xp. Floor traps doesn't give you xp (except fireball trap in some circumstances).

In fact you did, because monsters killed by door traps count as killed by yourself, thus appear in the kill list.

They can't, but can be in range of a explosion. I've had the ring explode on me that way before.

So it counts kills from traps you didn't trigger? Holy cow! Have you ever actually lost a whole game due to being killed by the cat ring exploding?

I am pretty sure that the cat ring exploding does not even do damage. It did not harm me at least.
