how does the game your playing at the moment look like?

For me i'm playing a Drakeling Mindcrafter who's currently at level 10, which have had a fair amount of luck ... started by going into SMC for generating relatively easy mobs and found a Halberd of Defense (later i found out that it was cursed but who cares) ... knocked the raider lord silly on my way back to Terinyo for shopping food and maked a quick dive down to generate the small puppy, and went for VC after that getting Healing asap, and cleared VC and PC ... and right now i'm on lowest level of PC grinding piety on the 3'rd alter in PC, so i'm not going to get a problem later on when i need to pray for stuff.

OMFG!!!!! SO! I'm on level 2 of the DH made it through the first floor easy enough with my cloak of invisibility. I get down to the second floor and I feel a certain tension. Meh...not a problem with this cloak I can back away from that room if I find it. First door I open I get this as my message across my screen when I open it...

You shatter the door with a mighty kick! *THUMB* *THUMB* *THUMB* *THUMB* *THUMB* *THUMB* *THUMB* *THUMB* *THUMB*

Really? Does the RNG hate me THAT much for getting a wish out of a pool that it HAD to make a tension room filled with Titans that see invis?

They can shot eternium quarrels(and they have high to-hit and damage), so best way would be to teleport away.

I have a dark elven mindcrafter, level 11 or 12, currently in the Caverns of Chaos. I think this is my first minddcrafter that stayed alive so long.

I had one tense moment when a writhing mass of pure chaos jumped out on me on the VD level 1!! I barely escaped and Tywatt Pare killed the damned thing!

I love corruption traps... He slayed two WMoPCs on the same level in the carpenter dungeon.

My 'current' game ended last night on D:24, when my level 19 Paladin who was a champion of balance backed a panicked mimic hivemind into a corner. I decided to finish it off with melee since I had Justifier and could hit really, really hard (I'd dropped the Snake from Beyond in something like 3 hits).

Anyway, it hit me, I got paralyzed, and then it went berzerk and wiped me out.

She's #2 on my high score list, one of the best characters I've ever had. What the hell was I thinking?

Current other game, Level 19 Human Elementalist. Crowned. Just got Ring of the High kings. Burning hands works surpisingly well on the skeletal king if you have it powered up, mine is level 28. Lets see...did all of thrundrars quests, saved griff bloodaxe, saved the puppy, saved carpenter, missed the pyramid. Went through dwarven halls got good xp there. best items I have, Ring of the high kings, boots of speed [+2, +0] (+8 sp) eternium longsword, elemental gauntlets, orcish helmet [+1, +5] (-2 pe) {Lol}
Got a huge spell bank, all the bolt spells except death ray, all the elementalist spells, strength of atlas, Heal, Bless, Revelation, slow monster, knock, light, darkness, cure light wounds, know alignment. REALLY looking for a spellbook of teleportation to make things easier. Debating between doing ToEF next or getting my climbing up and tackling the rift. I suppose I could XP in the tower for getting climbing up but I hate that place so I dunno...i have 2 waterproof blankets but no fireproof ones, sux.

EDIT ---
See I hate the ToEF my only chest armor I found of use so far was my starting blessed robe [+3, +1] and as soon as I entered the tower it burned up. That place sux.

well update on the elementalist. Level 21 now. Cleared the water temple, got the orb. Picked up moonsickle. Told blup where is mommy is. Cleared the gremlin cave got the phial. Had to let khelevaster die I didnt feel like wasting my time trying to find an AoLS i just wont get an ultra ending, not a big deal. Went to the ToEF again with a blessed fireproof blanket. Got half way done with floor 2 when it finally burnt up so I had to get outa there, lost a couple of blessed scrolls of uncursing and a few potions of extra healing trying to make it out. Cant do darkforge yet cant get past the golems PV. No new artifacts other than the water orb. Oh yeah picked up sword of nonnak thats helping me out. Im kind of at a loss right now...cant go any farther till I get the fire orb but I need to find another fireproof blanket to get the fire orb. Cant get into darkforge to try and get a wish for one. Guess i can train my climbing up with the master thief to go into the rift.

missed the pyramid (...) I found of use so far was my starting blessed robe [+3, +1] and as soon as I entered the tower it burned up.

That's why missing the pyramid is a bad thing:). I'm doing it in every game, it's quite easy to kill Rehetep, and AMW is best guaranted artifact(together with elemental gauntlets).

Character Elone. Grey Elf Healer. Level 30. Blew thru ToEF (I literally ran the guardian over). But I did it at day of 60 or so... I have trained a lot of learning, perception, and especially toughness at Garth. I wished for boomerangs, because you get 4-5 from a wish, and at least one is bound to be good (or even better if they can all stack) and RNG gave me something truly crazy... Three boomerangs of slaying that stack! With those boomerangs, monsters are in my mercy; all I have to do is to press the "Die now" button. Earlier I used to wish for scurgari of returning, but boomerangs are better because they are allowed prefixes and suffixes, and as you can see RNG can be nice...

Neglected most of my quests. I feel strong enough to annihilate all temples, and I will not visit any unneccessary locations til I close the gate (I'm on day 85 now, and I'd rather do this before corruption doubles).

Also, I was making savestates, but I havent used any of them yet. If I manage to finish without ever reloading, it will be my first win; and I'll probably post it.

Any comments, tips, or advices?

@Sradac: I think that once you enter the Pyramid, it remains open for the rest of the game. OR it remains open only if you actually get rid of Rehetep. But thing is, I am level 30 and Pyramid remains open for me.

Well, he got rid of the cursed spear... and is now dualwielding a swift orcish spear and a frozen orcish dagger. Did the VD quest.

He got precrowned by a neutral god and the reward was a CoLS. I decided to not have him crowned before he has the AMW.

Now level 12 and ~30DV/22PV. I'm feeling fairly confident.

lol. I had a really good character going further than I have ever been before. I found my way all the way down to the Banshee...hahaha. I seem to remember reading that if you wear a wedding ring, then the banshee's screams would not hurt you? So I put the wedding ring on. It was on my right hand...does it have to be on the left? She screamed and I died. ahahaha.

Now though...I have a grey elf wizard that is only lvl 12, but has a blessed dagger of mayhem and a medium crystal shield [+9, +7]. Doing pretty well...but I need more spells! lol. I didn't save the doggie, but I saved the carpenter. Acid Bolt is my main spell...ahaha. It's lvl 15 now. I have Magic Missile at lvl 8, but less than 200 points to cast with. I have close to 500 left on my acid bolt. I need to find more books!

about that banshee, look out, spoilers INC!!!

---================SPOILER===============---

(Highlight Text to see it with your mouse)

If you "U"se bees wax you will put it in your ears (What else could you do with it?) This makes you completely deaf. Therefore you cant hear the banshee's wail and are free to kill her. Alternatively, a male character can wield (in a weapon slot, not a ring slot) a wedding ring. In this case the PC in question still hears the Banshee's wail, but it does not damage the PC. The Banshee is still hostile, however. The Banshee's wail is displayed to a male PC wielding a wedding ring as follows by the game:

The banshee regards you in astonishment. "My beloooovvveed huuuusbaaaaaaaaaaannnd!"

Beware of trying to lead the Banshee around while wielding a wedding ring. While her wail can be exploited (see below), this is a dangerous practice. The wedding ring only works while the Banshee can see the PC, so leaving her line of sight for even a single turn can be fatal.

The Banshee routinely shrugs off bolt spells, but can eventually be killed using them. She is not difficult to kill in melee.

Players have exploited the properties of the Banshee by having her follow a deaf PC around. Her wail kills many monsters. A report from the Russian ADOM newsgroup (January 16th, 2001) reveals that the trees in the animated forest are vulnerable to the Banshee's wail. As might be imagined, dozens of trees dying every few turns leads to some very nice treasure. The downside is that the Banshee will become very experienced very quickly, thus making her much more difficult to dispatch should the need arise. NPCs known to be immune to her wail include Waldenbrook, Thrundarr, the Eternal Guardian and the Casino shopkeeper. Banshees can be wished for. There have been reports of wished-for Banshees being effective against some of the monsters found on D: 50 in gamma 12, but most seem to be immune in later gammas.

Current character is Langar, level 3 Hurthling Priest. He already found puppy saved but need to be retrieved later from PC6. Killed Kranach and even got the corpse for 1st time. Saved the carpenter and got a nice Stethoscope.

Well a Giant Ant Queen pet did most of the job, it is now level 10. It's been tamed in PC2. It's still Langar that did alone VD7 and killed himself Karnach (otherwise the quest is lost). Other pets died, still have one Giant lizard but it's too weak so useless and a Giant Ant Warrior, it's better but I let it with a stock in Yergius house. I just tamed a Grizzly Bear met when walking to Lawenilothehl.

This char doesn't have amazing stats but it's ok and it is already poison resistant. He know few spells but important one : Cure Light Wounds, Darkness, Hellish Flames. His PP is still very low.

Next step will be :
- Store in stock some stuff. Bless some water potions at an alter found in VD.
- Go neutral by making more friendly some animals with music and then hit them. I know it's bad!
- Get pickpocket from Yergius.
- Then either :
* Go to CoC with eventually a little trip in ID.
* Or go to HMV. I have already explored SMC but fled when I got a message warning me there was a dangerous threat. But I think the exit stairs is close to entrance plus now my GAQ is much tougher. I got the message when I was level 3 but now GAQ is level 10 and with my support with Hellish Flame and/or healing that should be fine. I'll attempt that if I get the GAQ level 11 when going to HMV. At this level 11 its number of attack goes from 1 to 2 which is a very nice improvement.

Character Elone. Grey Elf Healer. Level 50. The same thing that happens to me in every game, happened here. I gain level once in a blue moon, and then I bump into something like a tension room of titans or molochs and after clearing it, I'm level 50. Yeah, that always happens sooner or later. In this game, I entered a greater vault with fire reptiles. The huge one. The one with about 320 enemies. I was clearing it for about an hour, and I had some spells on me (book of invisibility, teleportation, slow, such). Clearing the level was somewhat slow outside, it had only drakes and lizards, I even used invisibility because they dont see me then. I have gotten virtually no good equips. I stepped inside eventually, and I saw so many ancient dragons and 10 great wyrms (the most I ever saw - even for a greater vault). At this point of game (day 87) I'm very adequately equipped, and very buff (about 660hp upon entrance). I have gotten no good items whatsoever, other than the mighty and rare Scroll of Cure Blindness (once you find out its use, you'll want one too). I used a trick to level up all the way to 50, and I'll put it into the spoiler space.

The experience you gain is reversely
proportional to your speed. Slow yourself down to half your
speed, and you will get double the experience! Of course,
do this when you are very certain that you will survive. But
that's not all; cast invisibility on the enemy, and the experience
reward doubles yet again! Those great wyrms gave me 500.000
or 5.000.000, I dont remember. But it's 4x exp!

Creepily enough, I entered another dragon vault (this one was small, and it had blue dragons). I was constantly worried about equipment loss, but I suppressed the fear by reminding myself that I will later camp in the Blue Dragon Cave for fun. This vault was much easier. Only one great wyrm, and a small number of ancient blue dragons. Others dont see invisible. Yet again, I gained nothing useful (except the useless hammer of gods, water breathing helm that was generated rusty, and a murderous shortsword of devastation, something like (+2, 5d6) so yeah. I did it for fun. Why dont those prefixes and suffixes generate on a phase dagger, or eternium longswords?)

Somewhere in between, I cleared the Air Temple without trouble. Well, there was some trouble, and this is a spoiler, but I wont hide it this time. I dropped all my equipment outside of the temple, because once you step inside, equipment destruction starts. I only brought all my cooked bodies, partially to keep self from starving, and partially to keep RNG busy. What happened? I was jolted for 1000hp in a single round!! Run Elone, run. Being at level 50, being a Healer, and having that healer HP bonus, even... I had 1200hp there. I survived, but that was creepy. WHAT in the Ancardia could have caused it? All the gold I carried... I would have never guessed that it was my gold, but I remembered that in my previous games, Air Temple didnt hurt so badly, so I looked for what has changed. I safely dropped all my money outside of Temple, and lightning hurt me for 0hp each jolt. One enemy dropped 4-5k of money, I picked it up, and it started hurting me for 1hp per jolt. Let this be your lesson. Anyway, AS ALWAYS, my cloak burned away. One burned away in fire vault, and one burned in blue vault, and one burned in ToEF... But at least cloaks are secondary.

I got the ring of master cat. Some people neglect this quest, but how hard is it to evade the 5-6 cats that will be generated thruout your game?

My next quest will probably just be the Earth Temple. I have a phase dagger, but I wont use it (the phase dagger message is so annoyingly long). Instead, I'll chip on them in melee. With 1200hp, and level 13 swordsmanship, it will be a win. There's nothing that instakills down there. It seems that my quest for a game with no scumming has gotten easy. Of course, I still make lots of backups, but like I said, if I ever use a backup, I wont post it in our YAVP section. My only concern is that I dont get too confident by some terrible coincidence. Corruption wont be a problem. Since I saved Khelavaster earlier in the game, he gave me those 6 blessed scrolls; and I still have 3 unused. That's more than enough to close the gate.

So close to the win!! See ya!

Female Hurthling. Was born under the sing of the candle and since its a pretty decent sign for anyone I let fate decide my character. Came out to become a thief. Ok, havent played a thief in a while this will be fun. Next came the talent screen, I had 4 of them to choose from! Alright lets take heir I dont know what thieves get lets see what it is. Picked charming, boon to the family and then heir. Then I went for alert since theives like their treasures. Came in with an adamantium dagger of penetration (+0, 1d4+5) very nice! Found an altar on PC 2 very close to the ant hole, sacced every ant that came out including the queen got me very close to my deity, but I want my crowning so I need to get my alignment to L+. Went down got the puppy but on my way up an ankheg generated in the cavern level killed it =( oh well lost that alignment boost maybe spending time with her will be enough. Nope. Ok lets go save the carpenter that will definatly get me L+. Nope! Wow what the heck I shouldnt have tried to practice pickpocketing. Ok well let me find some beggars in Hotzenplotz town. Found a beggar, that was hostile. Watched him get killed by a friendly mugger. The beggar dropped 268 gold coins! Them beggars got a nice job going on. So im in the CoC now about to do Thrundarrs first quest. Just got the easiest one ever and I dont see why this will prove my valor. "I want ye to slay a rat to prove your valor" I think thats an insult, us hurthlings can handle more than rodents, ya know!!

And I did something really stupid btw. Had not much food and a pixie left corpse. Seeing how I had eaten lots of them in my previous game without starting to teleport (and the char got to lvl 50, so I guess I ate many pixies), I thought it would be a low % and nothing would happen. Then I felt jumpy, so annoying

I think i might actually win with this character. Peter Lvl 36 dark elven wizard. Got all elemental orbs except mana. crowned champion of balance. Artifacts include Staff of the archmagi, Staff of the Wanderer, Robes of Resistance, Soaker, Ring of the Master Cats, Ankh, Mummy wrapping, will have rune covered trident.
Already took down the bug temple and went through the sinister library and have every spell. Cant cast wish though...
Over 400 hp and pp. Still has kind of weak stats, but reefs through everything with his balanced long sword of devastation.

BTW, anyone have any tips on how to take down a greater karmic vault? I can't come up with any ideas other than melee and hope i dont get owned.

My (second) hurhtling priest with pets still alive. Finished UC leading to HMV and found a Cave bear to tame in UC. It's a great pet for the very beginning of the game and I still have the giant Ant Queen. I often find in UC some Lightning Lizard to tame, not this time but I couldn't explore the sort of Vault in one UC level because it was on the other part of a river. Go search logs and build a bridge was too much time lost, I gave up.

I level up to 7 and a game bug probably stole me 2 levels of Skills, PP and Hits increase. Ha well, despite middle stats and unremarkable equipment this char is doing well.

At HMV, I hadn't enough money to buy the flesh golem (nice pet for the beginning of the game, immune to poison and probably in average, less aggressive than other pets, something that keep it alive better).

After that I lead to CoC, there I lost the GAQ after few levels, but before it helps well for a bee hive, but a part where it got critically injured and failed in the berserz bug (pet lost 3 DV but number of attack is multiplied by 2). When the GAQ died the Cave Bear had reach a better level, enough to be my pet here in CoC first levels. I also tamed the Giant Bee Queen of the hive found but didn't keep it for long and lt it close to some stuff stored, this pet is cool because it flies but its DV, number of attacks and damages are too low.

During those first levels of CoC I also go a trapped cloth, weird no way to remove it and it is [0, 0]. has I have more alignment changes, I'll perhaps use gods to put it in aches if I don't find any item destruction spell.

I reach the big cave relatively easily. Here I managed to get 4 permanent squares of herbs but not really the kind I would like. I got a white altar the level above the big room, perfect to do a precrowning. So I stick a little to the big room to collect few herbs and many corpse I cooked and sacced. I level up to 8 and get a precrowning, first time I ever do one! Cool I got the Crown of Leadership, perfect for pets.

I didn't menage that well my burdenning so if I raised ST to 18 my DX also lost 3 points to 14. I could do a few morgia training and improved a little TO and WI, alas I didn't succeed to make a right square of herbs. This phase last a little long but I also got a karmic lizard tamed, a tiger cave and a lion cave. I let the lion and tiger at arena level but keep the lizard in big room with the cave bear.

Now I got the precrown, I got the nice surprise to have the Cave bear Level 22 (first level named "very experienced") and the Karmic lizard level 10 probably soon 11 with 2 attacks instead of only one.

Now I'll go deeper to reach dwarf town. The level bellow the big room is a "I feel excited" level, cool but a bit too soon for the Karmic lizard, I'll have to take more care of it if I want be sure to keep it more.

EDIT:
At this point I found more book and got the best books for pet support, more Cure Light Wounds, Etheral Bridge, Calm Monster, Disarm Trap, Light, Divine Digger, Bless and multiple Baptism of fire (cool to spell attack without to worry hurt pets). The book I really regret to not have find yet is the Atlas spell to solve my carrying problems.

Calm Monster has been a great help to manage alignment and makes it drop from L+ to L for post crowning, it's much more fast and easy than taming for getting chaos points.

During those CoC first levels I also worn a trapped cloth, weird I can't remove it and it provides no bonus. I'll perhaps use gods to destroy it if i don't find any item destruction spell. Anyway I'll have to change alignment to N.

> BTW, anyone have any tips on how to take down a greater karmic vault?

It's probably not a good idea to melee a vault of
karmics. Invisibility plus magic missile will rule a
vault of karmics. You shouldn't take a hit. If you
have the slow monster spell, consider slowing
yourself down for that fight. You will recieve
tremendous amounts of exp. points, gaining
many exp. levels.

The XP is doubled if you turn the monster invisible.

Elone
04-14-2008, 11:56 AM
Scroll 14 posts backwards; I already explained it. Placing invisibility on yourself will give you half exp, placing invisibility on THEM will always give you double.

Speed is something else. The faster you get, the less exp the monsters give you. Did you notice that in GB (in talents section) it says that the 'speed' talents come with an "exp hit"? Well that's it. But yes, slow yourself down just before striking the killing blow, and since you are half of your speed, you'll get double exp. Wear boots of slow shuffle too! And an armour of sloth. If you can survive to land the final strike, you'll get more exp that you could dream of (approx 10x which gives a million or two from greated non-unique enemies). But goblins and kobolds still only give 100 exp when they're level 100, so dont count on THEM.

I have a lvl 13 Grey Elf Wizard right now. Went to the puppy cave and got down to the bottom and before I could find the puppy, I ran in to a stone golem. Couldn't get any spells through since I was lvl 6 at the time so I had to run. Spent some time in the ID. I even ran in to an Ogre Magus on floor 5. I thought that was a little out of place, but was able to win. Gained some more spells. Remove Curse and some ball spells which nice. Made it to lvl 12 and decided to go back to the puppy cave to clear out the vault and find the puppy body.

I need herbs badly. Toughness and Str are at their max right now. lol. 11 for str and 9 for toughness :( Need herbs badly...but went back to the puppy cave. Killed the stone golem with a few lightning balls. Found a wall monster. Took 5 casts of ball lightning to kill it. Barely survived the encounter. I have so little hit points it's really hard. ahaha. Cleared out the vault. Just a bunch of random creatures in it. Found some more ball spell scrolls! yay! Went to clear out the rest of the level and lo and behold...the puppy is still alive? I'm on day 9...and the puppy is still alive. No idea as to how that happened...but a stroke of luck it is. Now to get the puppy back to the little girl.

I want to go after Keethrax next...but I don't have Magic Missile yet. Any other suggestions for taking him out? He does a good job at resisting most all other bolt spells. But ball spells can't be resisted, can they?

Silfir

Unknowingly, you created the puppy alive by entering the last level of the Puppy Cave this early, and it managed to survive despite sharing a dungeon level with a fricking wall monster (man, that mixed vault must've been hell!)! It only starves if you enter the last Puppy Cave level before four days have passed - after that, it miraculously gets rid of its need for nutrition. Lucky!

I agree that you should get herbs ASAP. There's no need to rush towards Keethrax - you have Herbalism already, so you can just take a hike towards the CoC (you have more than enough levels to do that) and pay a visit to the big room. I think he resists lightning, and yes, you can resist ball spells, so you shouldn't rely on that. Use Magic Missile and Acid Bolt (Acid Ball, of course, is almost overkill) if you can.

aahh...I see. So that's how the puppy is still alive. I was confused...and I thought I was a goner when that wall monster stunned me. Wizards fighting on coward for the win! ehehehe. I think I got lucky with that vault and you were right...it was a pain to clear out. But I did manage it :D I have fire/ice/lightning ball spells. I finally found a book of magic missile too and I am quickly training that up. I was hoping to get Keethrax out of the way so I can get a book of frost bolt. Don't have one yet and those ice bridges are very handy :D

But thanks for the advice. I think I will make way for the CoC and pick up some herbs. Another thing that has really hurt me is that I haven't found a single scroll of identify yet. Not one...that hasn't been helping. When I do finally get one...I'll bless it and wait till I pick a bunch of herbs. Don't have any means to pacify the big room yet...so that will have to wait. If you pacify the big room though...and then pick all the herbs, will more herbs grow back naturally? I've always wondered that.

Ice ball can be used to freeze water.

If you pick all the herbs, you will have
to make more yourself, by means of holy water,
or the gardening skill plus herb seeds.

It would be interesting to know what method use players to get herbs for a given square. Myself I'm so worry to not lost the herb square that I pick only one or two time "full of blossom" and only one time "very strong" and never get an herb if the herb strength is bellow. It's very non efficient.

You can safely pick up herbs untill herb is "withered". So if you'll see that herb bush just became withered, wait untill it regenerates(assuming it's 2x2 bush - otherwise it won't regenerate). If bush is withered, there is a chance(quite high) that herb will disappear after picking up. But even if it will happen, there is no need to worry, bush will get back to 2x2 in next generation.

Thanks for the hints, but not sure I get it fully. I know the trick of 3 herbs as a corner that will give 4 at next generation but isn't this dangerous if another herb also die? Perhaps a herb in a square can die only if it is withered? So I just need be sure no other herb in the square is already withered?

And that means that during each generation you pick herb of only one tile in the square, check state, pick, check state, pick, until the state is withered?

I'll try that at next gardening session.

What I do is to walk around in a square as I pick.
You will get messages like:

"You see a strong herb bush here." Pick.
"You see a strong herb bush here." Pick.
"You see a withered herb bush here." Don't pick.
"You see an herb bush full of blossoms here." Pick, pick.
"You see a strong herb bush here." Pick.

Until they are all at 'withered' status.
Picking a bush while it is withered is a bad idea.
The pattern will always regenerate the herb if it
is lost, but the regenerated herb will be the only
one that is not at 'withered' status. That means that
you lost the revitalization of the other three bushes
in the pattern, because you picked one just a bit
too much. Not a good deal.

You can pick herbs from bushes, and they will have a RANDOM chance to weaken. You can pick 1, or you can pick 100 of herbs before the bush weakens. Chance is same for all three bush strengths, but bush will 'wither' instead of 'downgrade' on the last one.

Period.

Ok I see, thank you all. I had some believing that herb had or could have some hidden states so I never insist after 2 pick even if the herb was still full of blossom. I'll totally change my gardening. Now in my current game the problem is first to plant some herb to get the right square. Ha well stomafillia and stomaemptia can be quite cool anyway and I think I have also squares with some herbs that regen a few hits.

It worked nicely and my gardening is much more efficient. But one more question, if I get 2 tiles in a square at whitered state, am I taking a risk that both die at next cycle and after lost the square?

No. If one square(or more of them) is withered, there is no risk that it will disappear in next cycle.

Here's my current game (and a little bit of this has been talked about in other threads). I rolled up a character born in month of the cup so I made a grey elf wizard. Did some early exploring and managed to save the puppy. Went over to explore the cave where Keethrax lives and was stopped by water on the second floor. No means to get across it yet. Spent a little time in the ID and also became a member of the thieves guild and learned detect traps, but I needed an altar badly. So I took off to the CoC.

Somewhere along the line, I found a pool (I think I found it in the puppy cave) and was drinking from it and I became invisible and also managed to become doomed. It certainly has it's perks...but there are a few downsides too it.

On lvl 3, I found an herb level. Two patches of herbs growing morgia and pepper petals in both places. This has come in very handy as I have increased my gardening skills lately. I've been harvesting morgia and have my Will and Tough at 25...ready to boost to 26 if I can get it. I found the arena and there is only one ratling that is selling lizards...I thought there was always two? Found the dwarven city and got my first quest. orc scorcher. That was easy enough. My piety is really low right now though. I got the quest to get past the animated forest, but skipped it and went back to the ID for a few levels. Came back and went down to find the animated forest. I actually went through the dwarven halls. ahahah Completed the quest and then I explored that floor that I came out on. Found Khelevaster. Didn't chat with him yet though, but I also found an altar! Finally! (I thought I knew where an altar was earlier in the game, but I was wrong)

Spent some time on that floor sacrificing everything I could drag back over there. Some higher level stuff was spawning here at times...so it didn't take too long before I was able to get the doomed intrinsic removed. Still haven't managed to get crowned yet. And still no pools. I decided to go back to the ID to try and find more visibility potions. I will need them for the arena to finish that quest. (oh...cleared out the ogres and gained some more strength. yay!)

I spent some time in the ID...went down to lvl 16 I think when I gained my first corruption. But luck was with me. "You have become extremely thin and nimble". Best one I could get :) So I decided to head back up since my backpack was getting pretty full too. Ran in to some blinkdogs and managed to get a corpse so I can control teleportation now, but still no means of teleporting. Went back to the dwarven city and identified all of my loot.

Luck is really with me. I found an AMULET OF LIVE SAVING! First time I have ever found one of these in my entire Adom career. I'm going to go give it Khelevaster even though I don't see myself attempting an ultra ending. I've never eaten beaten the game yet ;) But the rewards will be well worth it. I did beat the pyramid pretty easily. I only have 3 visibility potions now though. I don't think 3 visibility potions will be enough for 20 matches in the arena though, but I am going to try soon. I'm lvl 19 and I am looking pretty good I think. Never had a character quite this powerful. I also may attempt to pacify the big room soon. I need to get some more herbs...moss specifically. Dex is still only at a 20 right now. I have a blessed ring of ice...but no fireproof blanket. But I still haven't beaten the water temple yet...so I got a bit to wait before that. Slowing myself down and killing stronger monsters has been a big help too.

That's my current character at least...hope I can keep him going!

I'm playing a gnomish elementalist at the moment, and I just made it out of the ToEF with the fire orb, for the first time ever!
I've been very lucky with this char up to now. Found two altars in Keethrax' dungeon and got precrowned (also for the first time) ...my gift were the Robes of Resistance, so I played that gnome like a troll with low melee damage after that :D
I traveled to the CoC when I felt strong enough and had gained some levels, and felt a surge of power before reaching dwarftown... I disposed of the shadow lord guardian and found Executor... I played that gnome like a full-fledged troll then ;)
The rest of the game was smooth sailing until ToEF, I found a ring of djinni summoning and used the wish on an AoLS, getting Teleport and Identify from Khelavaster; very useful indeed. Made the crazy dwarf's quests, visited darkforge, then the rift and got more lightning and fire ball castings. Then I climbed the tower...
The ACW fell easy with sword of nonnak + water orb + lightning ball; but before that I almost died because of those pesky red worms... I killed over 400 of them already and once they got some crits in and my HP was below 20  ...that was the first time it was really close with that character.

Still, there are some things that are really bad in this game:
- I accidentally killed a townsdwarf when hunting the greater daemon. Waldenbrook got hostile because of this, and some muscular dwarves appeared, but the rest of the town remained peaceful... I had to lure him away and kill him (and the other shopkeeper that was in the adjacent level; he also got hostile when I fought Waldenbrook...)
- I can't seem to get crowned, because I'm already very close and still cursed from Executioner... my god doesn't lift the curse from me when I sac...
- My first kill was a rat. D'oh!

Grey

Heh, well done - there's simply nothing that can stand up to the pairing of Executor and ball spells. Interesting about the shopkeepers sticking up for each other - not heard of that before.

As for getting crowned, simply take Executor off before praying! And don't worry about your first kill, there's no need for you to go for Ultra.

Been playing more...and I managed to get down the to the rift and survive my ordeal there. I got another corruption. The one that makes you teleport...but it was causing some real issues with trying to read books. So I drank a potion of cure corruption trying to get rid of that corruption. Nothing. So I read a blessed SoCC...and not only did it get rid of my teleportation corruption, but also got rid of my previous nimble corruption. Not too long after...I got corrupted and I now have the healing one that will hurt my dex and AP.

Made it out and went down and got the water orb. I am ready to make an attempt at the ToEF...but I don't have a fireproof blanket still. Is there any for sure place to find one? I really don't want to spend more time in the ID (gets boring...) at this point, but I guess I may have too. I think I am going to go to Darkforge now that I have all the right spells and the water orb. Already got the ring of the high kings and completed the graveyard. But I'm really not sure on what to do with the ToEF without a fireproof blankie. ehehe Any ideas?

Thrundarr will almost always give fire and water
proof blankets, as rewards for doing the 'arena
champion' quest. Aside from that, I don't know
of a guaranteed place to find one.

> I think I am going to go to Darkforge now that
> I have all the right spells and the water orb

If you have lightning ball, I think that's a
good plan. With the Water Orb equipped, your Wi
will be above 32 without having to wield the
Sword of Nonnak. That means you can wield two
shields for extra DV points, and still have large
radius lightning ball spells. It should be a
very safe way to get a few exp. levels.

> I'm really not sure on what to do with the ToEF
> without a fireproof blankie. ehehe Any ideas?

Plenty : )
I sometimes have to do the ToEF without a blanket,
and I have asked around a bit on that topic myself.
Since you are playing a wizard, you have most of
what you need for a ToEF victory, in the way of
spells. You will have to make two trips through
the tower, one to find all of the staircases, and
a 'blitz' run with a wand of digging.

On your first trip through, rely on frost bolt or
ice ball to handle the monsters. If you use frost
bolt the fire grues/demons will shrug off many of
the bolts, but just keep on bolting. It only takes
one or two hits to finish them. I think the only
monsters in the entire tower that can see invisible,
are the chaos servants and the ACW himself, so
invisibility can be very useful.

Once you have scoped out all of the levels, return
to your items, D:1 is where I always stash mine.
Pick up every stack of herbs, burnable missiles, and
and other such flamable items that you don't care to
lose one of. Drop them all, but keep one of each.
This will serve as fodder for the RNG, hopefully these
items will burn, and leave your wand of digging whole.
Bless the wand of digging, and make sure it has at
least three charges.

I advise wearing a ring of mental stability, as the
ACW will try to confuse you. You will have to rely
on the Water Orb for healing. Take the Sword of
Nonnak, and also a spare shield. This gives you
the option of boosting DV or Wi. Teleport yourself
to each staircase, until you get to the orb level.
Make a beeline for the Temple wall, it doesn't
matter if it is at the top or bottom. All you can
do on these turns, is just hope your wand of digging
survives. After you zap the wand once, you don't
have to wait until you are at the end of your tunnel
to zap again. Those are just more turns for your
wand to burn. Zapping it while mostly throught the
tunnel should make it through.

The fire elementals are easily handled with cold
attacks. What strategy for the Wyrm though? Well,
I have tried many, and the one that has worked the
best for me is to stun him. Disabling potions are
preferable, but without a blanket, they just aren't
an option. I advise to enter the main temple chamber
while invisible.

Position some chaos servants between yourself and
the Wyrm, they serve as meat shields, to keep the
ACW from shooting you with bolt spells. The ACW will
spend the vast majority of his turns, just trying to
confuse you. This is a good thing, because it keeps
him stationary, and if your Wi is respectible, it's
a waste of a turn for him.

It is possible though, that he will advance on you.
You want to try to possition yourself, so that you
have an escape route if you need one. You can bolt the
fire demons/grues to death, without giving away your
position, but if you use a ball spell, then they can
hit you.

Now simply fire stun ray after stun ray at the Wyrm.
If your 'meat shield' staggers away, the ACW may get
a shot at you. Things will be so crowded in there
though, that should be pretty unlikely. If the Wyrm
hits you, don't take risks, heal when you need it.
The Water Orb doesn't corrupt that much, especially
if you are wearing the Elemental Gauntlets. It may
take some time, but eventually the ACW will be stunned.
It may be helpful to train the stun ray spell a bit
before going in. I did it a couple of days ago with
stun ray effectivity at 0, and it took seven rays to
stun him. Not too bad really.

It is easy enough to finish the ACW with ball spells.
The other monsters will also 'see' you though, once
they have been hit with the ball spell. I advise to
start damaging the ACW with ice ball, as that will
finish the surrounding mob off quickly. The ACW himself,
is not especially vulnerable to cold though, so if he
is the only enemy to be hit with the spell, use acid ball.

Woot! Thanks for the tips. I just decided to go for it. Left my most important stuff in a safe place (SoCR and stuff like that) and just went for it. I had all the stuff from raiding darkforge with me...so that was extra fodder for the RNG to burn up. I didn't really lose too much in there though...but I did gain 4 levels! Once I was up top and I slowed myself down and cast that first frost bolt...saw the exp...I couldn't leave the place till I killed every last one of them in slow mode  That was awesome. I'm lvl 29 now..with some really neat armor and other finds...including a sword of sharpness. Now I guess it's time to go deep in to the CoC. Only been this far one or two other times and I made a stupid mistake and got killed by the banshee one of those times. IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN! ehehehe

Doing the tower while slowed was pretty brave.
I don't think I would have gambled that big,
but it seems to have paid off. Good job!

Your next big challenges will be the Cat Lord
(how's kitty karma?) and the Archmage. Also,
don't forget about the master mimic in the gift
shop.

Web up the place you want to fight the Cat Lord
and lure him there. If you lead him down the
stairs you will be able to teleport, but he
will get at least one free swing at you. Lead
of with a disabling potion (blindness confusion),
as they are 100% effective. You can now safely
zap him with wands of paralyzation/poison, to
great effect. You don't have to paralyze him
though, if you prefer the direct approach just
use humanoid slaying missiles, or ball spell him
to death while he stumbles. Most ball spells will
destroy your webs, but I'm not sure about ice ball.

I recently posted this over at the HoF. I
will modify it a bit and re-post it here,
for the sake of less typing : )

Low exp. level can make the Archmage a really
tough fight. Considered doing the blue dragon
caves first. They are full of exp. points.

Invisibility helps a lot in the BDC's. Remember
that you don't have to talk to the AKW before
ENTERING the BDC's, just make sure you talk to
him before killing the boss. Else you won't get
Needle. Talking to Sharad locks you into the
quest, and you might not want that until you
are sure you can handle it. I think you probably
can.

After you collect Needle from Sharad, consider
killing him for additional exp. points. If you
care nothing for Needle, just kill Sharad right
away, and be on with your buisiness : ) Sharad
can not see invisible, and is vulnerable to
magic missiles (which I assume you have). Just
bolt him to death, and enjoy the free exp. levels.
To maximize the exp. point gain, wait until you
have Sharad at 'critically wounded' status, then
cast slow monster on yourself and invisibility
on him.

If waiting for the Archmage doesn't appeal to
you, I will give an example of my way of dealing
with the Mana temple. I advise wishing for
spellbooks of acid ball, if you don't already
have the spell. Use wands of trap detection to
keep from setting off traps on the way. I go in
to the mana temple expecting to lose one mana
point (from casting out of HP's). It is not that
big of a price to pay, to simplify things a lot.

Before entering the Archmages room, make sure you
are invisible, and cast darkness. This prevents
(almost) all of the monsters from knowing you are
there at all. I like to have the Ancient Mummy
Wrapping on for my Archmage battle. Also have the
Water Orb in your tool slot, and all available
confusion resistance equipped. Now enter, and walk
straight, casting darkness every few steps. When
you 'feel a strange force attacking your mind',
that means the Archmage is awake. Now retreat back
to the corridor.

Follow the corridor upward, but stay at the corner,
and watch for the Archmage to appear in the door.
It may take 30 to 50 turns, but he should appear.
If the other chaos goons have seen you, you will
have to deal with them for a while, before the
boss can come. Just kill them patiently, and the
big guy will show up soon. When he appears, round
the corner and have a potion of blindess to throw
at him. Cursed potions of invisibility also work,
and are more abundant.

You should be able to take out the Archmage with
acid ball pretty easily. The whole operation
works very smoothly if you have a stack of potions
of blindness. If you don't have a stack, use your
alchemy skill to brew some. If you are low on
potions of extra healing, brew a few of those
before hand also.

Don't sweat the absence of a light source. If you
disable him properly, darkness won't be a factor.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info Gut. Funny thing you mention that greater mimic though...as I am currently in the middle of going through all the items in the gift shop. ahaha. But to my knowledge, I have not killed any kitty's.

Oh...and your wizard guide that you wrote is awesome :D Loved reading through it. As well as the other guides you wrote. I haven't played my wizard any more today. I started an archer...but he hit a tension room where the walls caved in and found a bunch of cave tigers that quickly surrounded him because a few rats came in from behind. So he has killed plenty of kitties so far. ahahaha. I'll go back to my wizard soon enough though.

Oops. The other guides aren't mine!
Silfir and Soirana wrote the good ones : )

I sent in some ideas on the upcoming
druid guide, but the final version will
be Silfir's own.

> I am unaware of killing any cats so far.

Check your kill list ':k' for any cave lions,
cave tigers, or wild cats, to know for
sure. Sometimes you don't get the 'dead
cat' message.

The other guides aren't yours? I must have not seen their name on them as I was glanced over that part. In any case...they deserve their dues with them as well as they are all excellent guides.

hmmmm, my current char (dark elven archer) is going to try for a ultimate order ending, but I am trying to decide some stuff (like what should I give to the ratling) currently I have given big punch and the sword of nonnack to him, and I have the golden gladius, moon sickle, and the elemental gauntlets. Is tactics at all useful to me? I want to save the elemental gauntlets to protect my ring of ice it the ToEF, and the moon sickle is nice cat wise (already encountered 1 that I *had* to fight, but used a !oE). so should I give the moon sickle and the gladius or should I save/use them elsewhere.

My char is currently very lucky, has found a =of djinni summoning (so can save khelevaster), 2 rings of ice, and a scroll of danger as well as some other nice junk (encountered 2 dwarven chaos nights on DH2) but the neutral god was kind enough to rid me of the knights stuff :( what I get for saccing without thinking.

But right now it is probably a bit early for me to worry too much, still just a lvl 15 char, but heres to hoping :D

EDIT: now I am a level 19 with Mastery in polearms, but still no boars skull :( and I should remember to do certain stuff before I become chaotic...

Hah, my current character died to banshee because i had no bee-hive in the level before her, there was a potion-shop instead. I knew i had seen a hive somewhere but i didn't want to go looking for it so i just casted magic map and tried to teleport to the stairs. "impossible."

Well, then i tried to teleport next to stairs. I landed next to the banshee, she was standing on the stairs and when i lured her off, she had one free turn to do her magic: "banshee screams, your head explodes, you die.."

Luckily, i was getting fed up with my character anyways. ^^

It was a level 21 gray elven wizard with fire and water orb, darkforge cleaned, and skeletal king killed.

I'm much better with fighter-type characters, monks especially. Wizards just aren't my stuff.

Another thing worth mentioning is the epic battle vs ACW. I ran out of PP when i got him to panic and flee with my frost bolts. I had to rub myself with spenseweeds and panic out to regen some PP's. When i ran out of castings on frost bolt, i started to use lightning ball and bolt, then i ran out of food, OMFG.

Had to go to buy some ratling-food from the arena-level. When i returned, i kept throwing lightning bolts at him, they bounced of a wall and hit twice everytime. Of course, he "shrugged off" most of them.

Next character will be fighter-type i'm sure. :D

This is my current character - a hurthling merchant - have used herbs and potions of exhange to get nice stats (with 4 gain attributes after that) not my only issue is i don't know if i can beat the ACW i do have alot of wands, but as a weapon a crystal dagger is the best i can use with my shield atleast for now...
did go trough all the pools i found, including darkforge, couldn't kill steelgolems tho so just teleported and grabbed the loot too, nothing worth mentioning in the weapon/armor rooms and no wish from the pools.
on the plus side i have found 1 pair of 7LB and about 4 rings of invisibility. would be nice to find some rings of slaying to add to the coin damabe...
and i accidentally killed a cat, so no ring this time, have cept it at the 1 kill tho so the king shouldn't be a problem)

Hmm, you have got nice stats for this stage of the game, and certainly enough HP for the Tower, but if you can't even kill steel golems you're in for some trouble. Have you done the water temple and dived down to the wall of flames yet? If not then I'd suggest doing so - you might get lucky and find a good weapon. Something of penetration would be nice. What about missiles? You have any good slaying ammo? Dragon slayers can make short work of the Wyrm. You could also have a look in the water dragon cave in case of any nice artifacts - you can steal stuff there quite easily using darkness and teleportation.

yeah it's the first time ever i have had stats like theese ;) and about the slaying ammo, i had decided to throw coins so never used anything but the ocassional rocks.. :/

first deacent weapon i found was dagger of devastation (5d4+6) wich means my damane in normal mode is 4d5+25 now when i got the srt up, had str 16 when i tried the golems actually, so couldwork now, but the dagger melts in the tower, and the best dagger i have fpr that s a crystal dagger... maby i should grab the big punch and train some mace skill or something, currently my dagger skill is 12 with 1444 hits from 13 - used only daggers after killing jarod.
my coins do +52 to hit 1d2+32 to damage (2d3+25 for the crystal dagger)

and yeach cleared down to the wall of fire.
i have quite a collection of damage wands and 20 or so potions of booze, so might kill him even with him shrugging quite a few of them. can't remember the PV of the ACW if it's close to 30 i need to train a better weapon i guess, or try the zapping, the water snake went down with wand of fireballs, obviously not gonna work here, and haven't found a single of penetration yet :/
oh look, one of the new rings was ring of damage, helps a bit and might always find a better weapon in the tower too, not too conserned about anyting in the lower levels.

ok so cleared tower of flame, blinded the ACW with potion of blindness and pounded away with big punch while berserked, he hit me 5-6 times during the ordeal, but didn't even gain my second corruption from that, and cooked the corpse so it doesn't rot so fast and go and trade it for a cure corruption potion.

oh and stat wise, my mana is now 6 as i managed to write ascroll of chaos resistance ;) not like i could really use the power for anything anyway :D
