From my playing I have found that player-crafted crossbow bolts don't work in any crossbows at all. I was not able to load them into any crossbows and fire them. Always I would get a "Unable to Shoot" message, even when the crossbow claimed I had ammo loaded and monsters were in range and LoS.
It also seems like crossbows can't be reloaded. I started with a crossbow as a Dark Elf assassin and some Dark Elf Quarrels which worked fine in the starter crossbow, but I was not able to reload the crossbow with other quarrels, including user crafted ones. I then found an artifact crossbow which I was also not able to reload.
