I know it has to be on a level with herbs. I know I have to have an herb seed. I think i must have a potion of water. How do I garden? I have never, ever been able to get something to grow. I've even tried to follow the special pattern. What am I missing?

Also, can you garden in the room that smells of herbs and antiseptics?

For the 'magical patterns' to work, the level must have had indigenous herb generation (ie. herbs must have grown on said level as it was generated, like in the Big Room).

As for water, holy water can create ('U'se) a herb bush (33% chance), and it works without the gardening skill. Generally, I only use it to add patches to existing herbs, to make them stable.

Gardening!

> I know it has to be on a level with herbs.

It doesn't.

> I know I have to have an herb seed.

You do.

> I think i must have a potion of water.

You don't.

> How do I garden?

You must 'a'pply the gardening skill, while
having an HERB seed in your inventory. Any
dungeon level will work fine. If the level
did not previously sustain herb growth, it
will after you plant an herb seed there.
The higher your gardening skill, the better
are your chances of success.

> I have never, ever been able to get something to grow.

Perhaps you were planting plant seeds instead
of herb seeds? Maybe your gardening skill was
a bit low.

> I've even tried to follow the special pattern. What am I missing?

Hard to say. My guess is that you were planting
plant seeds.

> Also, can you garden in the room that smells
> of herbs and antiseptics?

To my knowledge, you can garden in any room.

I've heard people say you can grow trees with them. Can't confirm that. I guess their best use is in training Gardening for better success with herb seeds.

I have no idea! A while back, I was experimenting with
farmer PC's because they start with herb seeds. I
tried training the gardening skill, by using plant seeds,
but if it worked, I couldn't tell it. Maybe I didn't do
enough of it, but my theory is that plant seeds don't
train the gardening skill.

I have never been able to grow a tree, despite trying
some pretty crazy stuff. I planted ~100 seeds all over
Terinyo, then spent ~30 years worth of game time in
the wilderness. Just using the survival skill, and holding
down the '5' button to make time pass. Still no tree.

You can gather enough plant seeds with the survival
skill, to train the St stat, but large rations work much
better. You can give plant seeds to farmers for a small
lawful boost to your alignment. (This is kind of funny,
because it works even if you throw the seeds at the
farmers. Put 1000 seeds in your missile slot, and hold
down the 't' button. It looks like you're machine gunning
the local farmer, and getting a L boost for it.)

You can also sell plant seeds for a small amount of
money, but it would be extremely rare for that to be
useful.

The flav in your experiment might have been that you spent the time outside, so little actual turns passed in Terinyo.

Perhaps it would be worth a try, to see if game
turns makes a difference. Also, in theory I
suppose time would pass more quickly, if the
PC was in the quickling tree.

Would be funny, to shut the gate, collect 100
blessed stomafillia, and just pass ~50,000 game
turns in the quickling tree. You emerge to a land,
untouched by the passing of ~100,000 years.

Indeed! My grey elven wizard will use his
alchemy skill, to brew up a horde of longevity
potions. He'll hermit up like it's a bomb shelter,
and let the years pass him by. Immortality is
mine!

Give seeds to farmers in first town.
