I'm stuck with my mindcrafter, i'm too scared to go to ToEF and i don't want to let Khelavaster die. I killed the assassin prince for fun/exp and drank the pools in the darkforge. I'm also crowned L+, got shock immunity and the wanderer (meh). I've also found two scrolls of chaos resistance and i haven't yet visited the secret room in HMV.

Also, i'm quite disappointed at my mindcrafting damage. Maybe it's because of my low stats?

Check the water dragon cave loot. You breathe water and have controlled teleport. The only thing that is troubling in my eyes is that you only have one scroll of darkness. To loot a hypothetical wand of wishing in the water dragon cave, you should have two sources of darkness. Being a gnome, I'd just mine for crystals. Why does your Gemology suck so much?

I analyzed your chances of killing the wyrm. You have the Ring of the High Kings, the elemental gauntlets and hopefully intrinsic fire resistance and lots of blessed extra healing potions, and your HP and armour is at the low end of the spectrum, but not low enough to make me say you have no chance. I'm having trouble seeing an efficient way of slaying the wyrm right now, though. You even have a ring of ice, so you should be able to use dragon slaying ammo safely, but you don't have any! Even with your healing potions, the Sword of Nonnak sucks so hard in melee I'd not try that route. And you lack efficient spells completely, being a mindcrafter.

You do not have a potion of blindness, nor do you have a cursed potion of invisibility. You do have a potion of poison and the Ventriloquism skill - untrained. You can also accept the corruption and confuse the wyrm with mindcraft though, I guess. With berserk arrows you might be able to kill him eventually.

I'd just go to the Tomb of the High Kings and get myself some more loot and XP in the cavernous levels. You can also set up a gremlin bomb to get access to maybe a RoDS, or at least the equipment that would make killing the wyrm easier, like dragon slaying ammo and a potion of blindness or confusion. The gremlin bomb method is the safer and more powerful method, but also mighty boring and very scummy. Kicking ass in the Tomb of the High Kings is the more honorable way, so to speak.

I've set up gremlin bombs in the dwarven graveyard before. I think it's the non-corrupting place highest in danger level, so it will get you the best stuff overall. The highest chances of getting a RoDS you have on D:8, but that would only solve your Khelly problem.

Yeah i figured out i could do some gremlin-scumming for RoDS's and slaying ammo, but just like you said, it's extremely scummy ;(. I also thought about going in to the water caves. Do i have to kill Shyssiryxius?

My gemology sucks because i've never thought it was that important. Maybe i should give mining a try. I just found a mace of destruction when i did a short trip to the darkforge's weaponry. I also pickpocketed ironfist gauntlets.

Crap, got killed due to stupidity. New character, but definately not a mindcrafter ^^

Maybe time for another cookie-cutter gray elven wizard.

All right, let's see... First of all you're a little low level for the tower. You also have no decent offense. No useful melee weapons at all. I see you've been using bows a bit, but not crossbows at all. Putting all your eggs in one basket like that is a bad idea, especially since you tend to find a lot of slaying quarrels in the game. And gnomes get 25% off crossbow marks requirements, making it especially bad to ignore crossbows with them.

Mindcraft damage is based entirely on level and willpower. Getting the water orb would help you a lot. However for Telekinetic Blast (which you'll want to use most) level is far more weighted than willpower. Diving down to the wall of fire might help a bit. Means letting Khelly die, but you've got to consider that as necessary now if you've exhausted all the methods of getting an AoLS. I'd suggest the Rift, but your Climbing is very low and you can't train with Yergius. You can get some xp just killing goons in the Tower. Invisibility helps a lot with this, and you can just gradually whittle everything down with Telekinetic Blast. It's easy enough to clear the siderooms in the top level without disturbing the Wyrm (if he does get disturbed and you don't feel up to fighting him then just run). Worth quite a few levels, though you'll likely have to keep leaving and re-entering to restore PP.

You can still get willpower higher though by abusing sickness and herbs. Assuming you still have a source of herbs, try and get some more morgia and a fair few devil's roses and curaria mancoxes. Herb training is based purely on the currently displayed stats, so if you remove the sword and use sickness it'll decrease your willpower into the trainable range. This'll let you train toughness higher too, which is handy for the tower. You only need to reduce your stats for the moment you eat the herbs - you can cure yourself straight after and still get the stat increase.

I'd suggest training up bows and crossbows more and looking out for more ammo. Dragon slaying missiles make very short work of the wyrm when well-trained, though they can be rare. Construct slaying ammo does wonders on the elementals, and blessed demon slaying ammo quickly kills demons and grues. Swamp hydras are good to train up with - you get 5 marks per hit (best to use your least damaging arrows to get the most out of them). It's also easy to avoid their attacks with SLBs. You can find them in any of the wilderness swamp squares.

Telekinetic Blast will work on the Wyrm, but slowly. I've not actually gotten a mindcrafter this far, but I assume confusion blast is a bad idea to use (though its results would be very nice). If you want to use TB on the Wyrm then get yourself a buffer of elementals between you and him or trap him with some webs. Potions of blindness or confusion can also work wonders. Your arrows of thunder can help too if you manage to land a hit against him, and dipping them in a potion of poison certainly wouldn't hurt (well, wouldn't hurt you - he'd obviously suffer). With him disabled or yourself protected just keep firing away till he falls. Wands of acid and lightning are good to fall back on if you run out of PP (though you can just pray for more).

Damn, posted too late :/ How did you die?
Accidently mindblasted a tension room full of undead, through a door, in ID. Didn't remember to make a memorial file.

:/

Thanks for bothering though

I just created a gray elven wizard, started with frost bolt and a potion of cure corruption, found AoLS in SMC when looking for stairs, found medium crystal shield [+9 +4] immediately after descending to UD1. Found second potion of cure corruption in UD2.

Why all these boring characters have so good luck?

gut
05-10-2008, 12:46 PM
Gray elven wizards, boring?

There are other powerful race/class combos out there.
Orc barbarians, and high elven archers to name a
couple. Mindcrafters are pretty challenging, I think.
If you are looking for a PC with some fancy class
powers, to add some spice to the game, assasins and
necromancers can be fun. They are kind of weak to
start off, but should be much tougher than your
mindcrafter was, at the same point.

I was too late to post anything for your MC, but I
would have advised getting on with the game. Either
by killing Khelly, or the ACW. The downside of
mindcrafters is that they have to depend on wands
for EVERYTHING, but if you go in knowing that, they
aren't so bad.

You had all the wands you needed for an easy ToEF
victory: cold, acid, and stunning. You just didn't have
them fueled up. I will list the best wand fueling method
I know of, in case you want to give mindcrafters one
more try sometime.

There is an unlimited source of booze in Lawenilothehl,
in the form of beggars. Give them ~45 gold, then chat
with them to collect a cursed potion of booze. You
may have to do this a few times, to get the booze.
Now kill him or lure him out of town. Roam through the
town, killing everything that is not a merchant or a
beggar. This will cause infinite beggars to be spawned.
Your booze will all come cursed of course, but that's a
good thing. It stacks, making it easier to bless it.

Grey
05-10-2008, 02:01 PM
Relying on wands is the one thing that puts me off mindcrafters most. I'd mostly use the beggar thing just so I could get teleport through a wand of wonder... GTB looks awesome though - at level 50 with 50 Wi it would do 60-360 damage. Romping through D50 with that would be immense fun :)

gut
05-10-2008, 08:31 PM
Agreed. I can't remember the last time I played
a mindcrafter. I will say though, that their powers
are FUN if not effective, and that's good in it's
own way.

If a player just wanted to make things a bit easier,
they could set their system clock to DEC 31, and
start the game with six blessed potions of booze.
That's cheap I know, but if playing for kicks, why
not?

05-13-2008, 02:13 PM
Ok...I'm kind of stuck with a character right now as well and could use a little advice. I have a high elf archer and is doing pretty well. Lvl 14 now...spears is skilled up to a 10 and bows are at a 7 right now. Need to work on the bow more..but I have more important issues.

I can't swim. And I have some orange potions, but I have yet to identify them as carrot juice...and I only have 2 of them that are not blessed. I've had a very hard time finding water as well. I have only found 4 so far in this game and 2 of them are used already. I can't get through to the bottom of the puppy cave as on lvl 4, there is a large river. No means of freezing the water yet (if I even have a wand of cold, it's not identified yet...I guess I could start zapping wands to see what they do) and I can't swim. I already saved the carpenter. I can't get through SMC right now. Generated it on lvl 1, but couldn't find the stairs after exploring half of it. So I went to CoC to further myself along. Generated an alter on S:2 in there...which was nice. Arena is on floor 4 I think. Floor 5 though...is a huge river cutting through it. Again...I'm stuck. No means of freezing the water and I can't swim.

Now...I could possibly swim through these rivers, but I would quickly find myself wanting to come back up and really don't want to have to swim it again. Not to mention, that I don't want my stuff to rust while I'm drowning in the water. Is there any for sure way to prevent your items without making them all rustproof? I have a waterproof blankie...two of them, but that won't help the gear I have equipped at the time. I guess I could take it all off and put it in my inventory and then cross....

But I'd like to hear some other ideas of how to get myself...unstuck. I think another thing that hasn't helped is that I have tried to read a few scrolls and didn't do so well. I'm pretty sure that I am cursed and quite possibly doomed because of it? Oh..and I goofed up and hit a karmic lizard once too. lol. I haven't been able to work up enough piety yet to clear the cursed and doomed effects. What can I do at this point other than waste time in the ID?

Edit: Also...when I was lvl 5, I ran in to a tension room full of wild cats ;) The down staircase was in that room. So the Cat Lord is gonna have to die when I get down there. Just another bit of bad luck this character has had, but I've enjoyed playing this character and gotten out of some sticky situations with her.

spectre
05-13-2008, 02:56 PM
First of all, don't get too obsessed with the cat lord quest. It's optional, and while the reward is nice, don't let it get to you. It's not like it's the main quest of the game (-:

As to your river problem, it's all doable without swimming, if you have okay HP. One thing to do is minimise the number of moves it takes to cross the river. IF you're afraid of rusting, and drenched scrolls, you need waterproof blankets, yu may also want to remove the rustable equipment for the swim.

If you think you might want to come up, go upwards and finish your business beforehand, so that you don't have to cross the water more than twice.
You may onsider to scum the ID for a few levels, if you're short on stuff such as water.

There's yet another alternative, if you have a want of trap creation, you could try to create a teleportation trap and cross your fingers.

gut
05-13-2008, 06:09 PM
There is a guaranteed wand of teleportation in the
VDDL. There is guaranteed potions of booze in
Lawenilothehl, in the form of easily killed beggars.
That should get you across rivers easily enough.

Kato
05-13-2008, 08:40 PM
Thanks guys. A little luck finally swung my way with this character. I took off my gear and put it in my backpack and started across the 4 spaces I would have to cross to get through the river in the CoC. I had 83 HP at the time. I thought it would be enough...but it wasn't. Before I went in to the 4th space, I had to pray and get healed. But I made it through. Got down to the dwarven city and went below it. First floor below it has a shop...a bunch of figurines. Went down one more floor and there was another shop. Luck would have it that I found a helm of water breathing! That's made my life much easier :) Now I'm about 5k from getting lvl 17 and I am entering in to the Pyramid and crossing my fingers that I make it :D

The swimming skill comes out throwing lazy jabs.
The WoT hit it with a left, and another left. The
swimming skill is ROCKED! It's stumbling backward,
it doesn't even know where it is! The WoT closes
in for the kill. A VISCIOUS uppercut by the WoT!
A right cross, and it's over! WOW! The WoT just
scored a dominating first round victory over the
sucky swimming skill, and in devastating fashion!
What we all have to wonder now, is 'will the

Well...that character didn't die to traps. Detect traps is a handy skill and I've been through the pyramid enough that I know where the big lines of traps are. Made it through just fine...but I should have found a way to remove the doomed intrinsic I think. But then I would have missed out on the pyramid :( I put on my ring of invisibility and entered the top floor. Took aim at the mummies and jackal demons...wish I had some ammo of undead slaying or something. I killed all of them except for one mummy, one jackal demon and Rehetep. Then...bad luck came my way (happened a lot with this character...ahaha. RNG just didn't like this char at all) and I missed...on berserk mode 6 times straight while they closed in on me. So I changed my tactics...and took a beating. Doomed intrinsic must have kicked in and I got hit by Rehetep and he made me sick. Then the jackal demon crit hit me. I killed Rehetep...but then the jackal demon nailed me again and I died. lol. It was a good run with a rough character though.

I have a new archer going...and managed to get precrowned at lvl 9. Random artifact was the ring of immunity. Never had that one before...but it's awfully nice :D

I agree.

Most of my pyramid-runs are very short, i just drink a potion of invisibility before going up (i don't know if it helps at all but i usually do so), change my tactics to coward, walk straight to Rehetep and zap a wand of fireballs 1-2 times and he's dead. Then i just collect the loot and leave. :D

If one teleports to Rehetep, instead of walking, you
can avoid his speech, that awakens all the monsters.

Silfir

Um, gut, you do realize that getting the wand of teleportation is not as easy as you make it out to be? You pretty much need to have a means of item detection or magic mapping plus some means of digging or teleport control. To get item detection or magic mapping requires successful identification of equipment, which is not trivial in the early game.

Also...

The Swimming skill is breathing heavily, its thoughts in a daze. Only barely it manages to struggle successfully to stand on its feet again before the roaring "10!" would end all its hope. It glares, intimidated by the strong opposition, at the already boasting wand of teleportation, planning to end the fight for good with another last, hefty blow...
When suddenly it stops dead in its tracks. Its limbs start to give way. Realization creeps into its mind, and its face is aghast. "Shit! I'm turning SOBER! I need booze! BOOZE!", it cries, but to no avail. Then it faints, leaving a surprised Swimming skill watching, then celebrating its victory.

TP control is a breeze to get. A means of magic mapping or
item detection is not rare, and often can be aquired in a shop.
If your PC has the gemology skill, they can usually find a
crystal of knowlege easily enough. I never bother with the
swimming skill, and it doesn't hinder me.

Oh well. The Swimming skill is almost vital to my darwinistic approach to the game, which is to go through the SMC and the UD IMMEDIATELY - if you die you die, if you live the character has proven his awesomeness.

TP control is a breeze to get? I don't feel about it that way, honestly. First, you have to find a blink dog. Second, you have to get a corpse. I guess there are ways to ensure the latter once you've accomplished the former, but without Food Preservation that's not exactly a breeze.

Well it sure can be a really prolonged breeze. :)

I guess I was thinking of the quick way of getting
a BD corpse, scumming the ID. If one wants to play
a less scummy game, they can be much more rare.
