Runner-up: DeSt

Game Reports:

After each turn you must give a full and frank description of your activities, with especial detail on things that may affect other players. This can be done as a story or as a plain retelling of events. Some notable things to include:

-dungeon levels traversed
-items found
-items lost/damaged
-prayers used
-piety gained using holy symbol
-levels gained
-skills increased
-talent choices
-stat changes
-where you left off
-monsters on the current level not killed

It is also preferred for you to create a log file with the '(' or ')' key at the end of your turn and post it in code tags. You will need to trim it down a lot to fit in the post though - I recommend cutting out inventory junk, unused weapon skills, background, kill list, and anything else that isn?t relevant to your play.

You must, of course, attach the save file to your post for the next person to pick up. This must be made into a zip file to be accepted on the forum (no other file types are allowed). There is a file limit of 97 Kb - thankfully in infinity we?re very unlikely to reach this.

Should you die please give us a report of what happened in as much gruesome detail as possible so we can mock you ;) Do not post an flg - this would reveal hidden information like equipment identifications and intrinsics. However please do give us details for the high score listing - in particular score, xps, no turns, what killed you and how, and what level you were on (most of this stuff is at the start of the achievements section of the flg).

High Score:

The infamous list of how everyone died.

Okay. Well, good news, I live. Bad news, just barely. :) I think I'll be nice now and a bastard later, and therefore I'll provide as detailed a log as possible. I forgot to take a vlg file, but I'll describe my adventures.

X decided that X isn't a worthy name even for someone who wants to commit suicide. Kenny would be more appropriate, he* thought. I hope you like the name, if not, feel free to think of something and rename it. :) Kenny started with reading the book of Cure Disease he received as a farewell gift from old Gramps. He decided to read it dry. You now have about 270 castings of Cure Disease (I think). Good against rat plague, if that may happen.
The first level was the scariest, I suppose. Kenny opened the door that was closed ahead of him. Immediately, he encountered a... kobold! No, the excitement is not here yet. He walked down the corridor, not encountering a chaos creature of instant death, and came to an intersection.
To his right (that is, left on the screen) a goblin and a kobold fooled around in a room. Kenny walked up to them and took them out defensively. He got a bleeding wound but nothing special, it bled for a mere 3 turns. He also found a mace in the room. He decided to risk wielding it - he didn't manage to discover its status - but no worries, the mace wasn't cursed, though its stats were identical to Kenny's own. He decided to keep it anyway as a spare. BUC status unknown.
Next he encountered a few other lowly creatures - goblins, kobolds, even a rat. Then he came to a closed door. He pushed it but it was locked tight and didn't budge at all when Kenny leapt against it. It might be a trap door, he thought, and decided to turn around, exploring the other niche that was in the other side of the room.
Nothing, except an empty room with some weak creature. Well, Kenny sighed, he would have to break down the door. He kicked it and... the door exploded in the fireball. It ignited Kenny's scroll of gold detection and burnt down Kenny's clothes.
Great, now he'd have to walk around naked. Those clothes weren't worth much anyway. A bigger catastrophe would be the fact that Kenny was reduced to one third of his life energies. Well, now his heart was in his throat. What would await him?
A homonculus skeleton. That was scary. Kenny wanted to destroy the clattering thing quickly and leapt at it with a berserk rage but the undead hopped aside and struck Kenny in the stomach. Ouch! Calm down, Kenny, he thought and drew up his shield in front of him. After three more (cautious) hits he bashed in the skeleton's skull without getting any further hits. (Sorta a NDE with this one) The skeleton was carrying a sling that Kenny identified as blessed. Further down the corridor, a heap of 5 bigger rocks were strewn around. Kenny flung a rock from the sling. He discovered that both rock and sling were pretty much normal. Ahead of him was the stair to the lower levels. He climbed down the stairs.
Well, next level was much duller. He found the stairs pretty soon and climbed down again. (Along the way, he practiced using a sling on the monsters that stood in his way.) The third level's stair was guarded by a homunculus (from down below). Probably the living version of aforementioned skeleton. Kenny knew that homunculi can put one to sleep and he thought that sleeping in a defensive posture might be better than in a berserking one, so he assumed a defensive stance and flung some rocks at the creature. It was slain with a few rocks. The little daemon carried a wooden shield; Kenny replaced his small shield with this as it actually offered some protection against successful blows as well.
He came to the stairs soon, but decided to explore a bit. He opened the door that led to the next rooms. He encountered a skeleton and a ratling archer. Latter dropped a light tome. Kenny decided to withdraw to the stairs to do some 'light' reading and soon enough, he discovered that it was a webbing spell. (Note from author: I read the book dry because just before it was gone, it had 75 castings. Thought I might try and milk some more.) Well, at least he'd have some way of running now. He went to the room and down the opposite corridor afterwards.
He saw a skeleton, herding a giant lizard. The skeleton hissed and released the reptile. Well, this would be off-limits, a sweating Kenny thought. He immediately put his new spell to use: as he cast the spell, a ray of sticky spider webs shot from his fingers, which got the two monsters entangled. He quickly withdrew to the stairs, closed the doors and waited - paranoid from the two crooks, he stood in front of the door, in case he'd need to launch a web. Nobody came, however. He could finally rest.

From the author:
Kenny got to level 5 during the journey. He fully explored level 1 and revealed much of the indeed duller level 2. Kenny is still on level 3, in case the next one would be a masochist and would decide to try the lizard - I didn't have the balls.
Kenny pumped Healing to 100, Detect Item Status to 100, Food Preservation and First Aid were also improved. Kenny cooked a few corpses, so starvation issues might not happen for some time. He also found a Wi amulet on the way. (+3) On level 3 he took the Hardy talent, perhaps to get a few lousy points of PV - I often take this route, and should the vets prove how much I fail; well, unintentionally competitive tactics.

*Rereading the text and thinking about the other thread, I realised that Kenny is a she. Whatever. Substitute all he's and rename it next turn.

I'll be waiting to pick her up after you Maul :D Does our league want to give her a unique name? Something to do with water since we are the League of Water?

I'll be there for another few hours, so, even me could play today(GMT +2) :)

As of name - no ideas.

Woah, while I typed you actually posted twice? :) Well, I named her Kenny (see notes) but that is a sort of temporary name, I suppose. Even if she was a he.

EDIT: Actually, I think I posted everything that was required, except stat changes. Nothing from outside, but Kenny became more studious and I think he even gained a Str point or two from being Burdened.

Is Kenny a hermaphrodite?

I found that kobold and lizard quite quickly. Kobold died, but I ran away from the lizard. I changed weapons as well...spears tend to be more useful at this point than a mace. Explored the rest of the level and encounted the normal things. Found a beserker who took me down to 8 HP, so I drank a potion of healing and finished him off. Prayed a bunch to heal some and improve piety a bit. Then ran around some more. Killed a kobold shaman as well. Ran in to that lizard again though, and he was quite upset. Call me crazy, but I went toe to toe with him...and then cooked his corpse and ate it. Tasty. That lizard also put me up to lvl 6 and I added Healthy to the character for faster HP regen.

Started to go back to the stairs...but a swordsman blocked the way. I stood toe to toe with him for 3 rounds...then I ran! I ran around almost the entire floor with this guy chasing me...then I ran in to a cave tiger. Started casting web and I FINALLY caught them in a web. Was able to make my escape and head for the stairs again, but a ratling fencer was there. Used web again and after many disarms, managed to kill the ratling fencer. Got poisoned by spiders in a web though, so I sat near the stairs and prayed for piety while using first aid when the poison coursed through my veins. Got the message that I feel comfortable too.

Descended down to the 4th floor. Quickly found the next down staircase, but decided to explore the rest. Got about halfway through the floor when I saw an ogre and he started charging for me. I used web again and managed to gain some ground, but right RNG struck...another Ogre was blocking my way back to the down stairs. Took some running around, but I managed to give them both the slip with some webs and running like a coward  Nothing else I could do with two ogres over there, so I dropped down to the 5th floor.

RNG doesn't like me...ran in to another Ogre. Managed to get away when I found a gibbering mouther. Snuck up on me and he mouthed me...and I died. Kenny was killed by a gibbering mouther on level 5 of some ancient caves. :D

On a side note...this is the first time I have ever played with a Hurthling. Yikes...never again! I had hoped to do better in this game, but I can't wait to see who wins and hopefully Grey will set up another game ;)

Number of moves? Points scored? Xps? An active turn to be sure - after so many close calls it's a shame you finally died.

DeSt, take up the reigns whilst I drag this bloody corpse away :)

Doh...sorry Grey. I'm so used to dieing and not doing a save file or anything like that. I was up to turn 3500...almost to the 4000. Was still lvl 6 when I died.

Edit: Wait...I'm still on the HOF page. ahaha. I got the stuff out of the FLG.

Tut tut - a reminder of the rules: do not post flgs! They contain hidden information like intrinsics - in this case it pretty much reveals that the cursed ring we've all started with is stun resistance. Can everyone please be mindful of this in future - it ruins the game if we gain information like this.

Bad luck on your death, Kato - you were so close to the turn limit!

Kato

Removed that bit of info out of there...I had dropped a bunch of other stuff out that I didn't want to spoil, but missed that one. I guess if we can't edit the info out of the flg, then maybe someone could post up good instructions on how to get the info?

Grey

There's nothing wrong with getting the necessary data from the flg, just don't post the whole thing. All the info would be on your high score list too.

I would, but I think it's unfair for me to know and others not to. The information is out now - I think it's best for everyone to be aware.

I'm glad to see we continued with the PV tree!
Scrolling through the vlg, I kept saying GOSH, and
WOW! It looks like we made huge progress there : )
Kind of sad to see the 'thrown rocks' skill, still so low.

I know I said earlier, that I would curse or
doom the PC as soon as allowed, but I'm having
second thoughts about that. Some of the leagues
might go more slowly than others. Do any of us
(potential) winners really want to sit on our
hands, while other leagues are still on the tail
end of round one. I don't think so.

With that in mind, I have a few thoughts for my
fellow water leaguers. Of course, other leagues
could view this also, so I will hide it with
special 'water league hider tags'.

[WATER LEAGUE ONLY]

With low St, and high De, missiles will inflict
more damage than melee weapons. At least until
we do a lot of St training, or get an ego weapon.
I would suggest milking every goblin rock thrower
we encounter. A hurthling starts with the archery
skill, so we have access to extra missile damage
through talents. I advise pursuing them as soon
as we complete the PV tree. Since our Wi and To
stats are both above 15, we can even gain the
'immune to pain' talent.

Also, hurthlings start with the 'thrown rocks'
skill at 4, so it might be better to focus on
that, than on 'slings'. Don't forget, that
missiles will gain marks, even when fighting on
'coward' tactics. We might consider dropping a
melee weapon entirely, in favor of an extra
shield. My advice is to set tactics to the most
defensive setting, that still allows you to
damage the enemy. This will take a bit longer
to kill the enemy, but the marks to the 'thrown
rocks' skill, will pay off soon.

We have the music skill, and an instrument, so
taming a pet might be a life saver. Even with a
low music skill, it is possible, just set tactics
to coward, and keep trying. Even a lowly bat
could have distracted that 'mouther', long enough
for an escape. (Sorry I wasn't awake for the
first part of this.)

We have torches, so USE them. It can't really be
considered competitive, to use what is available
to you. It's not like you are trying to deprive
others from the benefits, you are just trying to
give your self the best shot you can.

[/WATER LEAGUE ONLY]

EDIT: I think I will only be able to think of our
girl as 'Kenny' now : ) When my turn rolls around
I will have to rename her.

Also, I have just read the 'fire league' thread, and
I find myself thinking similarly. I want our girl (?)
to be the best. I now have no intention of any
competitive play, until it's down to two players left.

Yeah, i've done almost no weapon training - clearing tension rooms with bolt, and 'cause fighting in darkness with thrown weapon a bit silly :)

And imagine me realizing how great arrows i've just picked up :)

Almost never tried to zap-identify wands, but got hit by wand of far slaying (9 charges one) only 3 times :)

A warm thank you gut. I'm rather new to the forum side of adom, even though I have lurked around here and the HoF forums for quite a while.

A small introduction for you all:

I am a finnish adom-head since the year 2000 or so. I haven't managed to win a game without save scumming yet (although I have come rather close...). And I usually tend to die either early on, or by thinking that my character is already beef enough to dare the DH or ToEF :P

With that said, I'm looking forward to being the weakest link ;)

I just realised we don't have to worry about cats!

Now I'm happy.

If it gets to my turn in the next couple of days though, you may have to wait a bit - my degree finals are on Friday, so I'm thinking now might be a time to start reading the books we're supposed to have been studying all year.

Here's my report...

I started by going down the corridor, killing some pesky beasts including a werewolf and its summons. Soon I came across a clay golem, from which I ran and went the other way. Soon I found the stairs, but decided to search the level a bit further. Soon came across the same clay golem as before (in a different room than before) and decided to try to bolt it, and got it to severely damaged, but then decided to run again as it got next to me and hit me, lost some hp and didn't want to get slowed. So I ran towards the stairs, only to be stoned by a hill giant, which dropped me to 1hp. So I decided to use a PRAYER. Then bolted the giant, ran from the golem and went downstairs.
Searched whole I12, got a spider corpse and a fire beetle corpse, and found a revelation spellbook. Spent some turns praying while waiting to get healed before realized there's a healing spell available.
Went to I13. Nothing fancy, searched most of it and ran down the stairs from a baby white dragon as the nether bolt doesn't help on it. On this level a water trap ruined the Revelation spellbook and a scroll of gold detection.
I14 then. Not much, just wandered ahead and got to a undead tension room. It's the room right next to Eunice on the save. THis is where I ran out of turns. Nothing of note discovered on the level besides that.

Some more things:
Trained with bows a bit (we do have the slaying arrows). Oh, and I found a better bow along the way.
Got 2 levels more, trained archery, music, and listening.
Got the "feel no pain" talent.
Strength rose to 16. Should get Strained! to train it further.
Found Holy Water. When more common water is found, we shall make more of it.
And I cast the revelation spell after I got it, here's the results:

You're poison resistant.
You're stun resistant (gained through an item). [the cursed ring?]
[and no fire resistance gotten from the beetle]
Healing every 49 turns.
Mana regeneration every 59 turns.

Heh, I had totally forgotten about this during the last few days, since i got my new laptop...

Oh well, I guess I didnt miss anything, read up on what has happened so far. So what is our objective, when it comes to beating the other leagues? Are we trying to get deeper than all of the other leagues before we hit 2 people left in the competition or something?

And now I'm thinking I should do a little ID practice dive to prepare...
Can't wait till my turn!

FantomFang:
> So what is our objective, when it comes to beating
> the other leagues?

To be honest, I don't exactly know. What I DO know,
is that if we can get an inch above the Fire League,
in any way, shape, or form, I'm a happy fellow : )

I have recieved the file, and will update this as I play.

I will update this, as I play.

First thing, I rename the PC to Kenny, because
I find it endearing : ) Next, I put on the
+2 boots, and switch missiles to blessed rocks.
I then cast bless upon myself for an extra point
of PV, and some extra to hit and damage on the
missiles. Now I begin the slaughter. (My own?)

I kill the undead with rocks, and our shield
skill increases. I put the 'mighty' sword in the
pack, to gain the 'strained!' status. I instantly
run into an acid trap, luckily there was no
item destruction. Oh, this is too sweet. I just
found a blessed clean robe +2 on PV and Ap.

Ate a bunch of food, to achieve 'bloated' and
'strained!' status at the same time. The theory
being 'the slower, the more exp. points gained'.
Speed is now only 70. Another acid trap! Can't
complain though, still no item destruction. Found
a goblin rock thrower, and am milking him like a
goat.

Thrown rocks skill increased to 5. My GRT died to
an accident, and some monster set of a pit viper
trap, somewhere on the level. It may have been a
dark elven warrior, I found him in a panic. He
was still a difficult fight, poisoning me about
four times. I stunned him with our lesser devine
touch spell, and killed him with rocks. Picked up
a mithril spear. I will train the stun ray spell
as I go.

Entered ID:15, and had to work my way through
yet another tension room of undead. I utilized
the bless spell, in order to train it up a bit.
I had to kick my way through a locked door, and
of course got a fireball. I had dropped all of
our items though, so once more, no item destruction.

Found what may have been the worlds most motivated
jackelwere. We have now killed 60 jackels! It was
good for missile and shield marks though. Picked
up a slightly better shield. Had a bit of trouble
with a female doppleganger lord. I softened her
up in darkness, and finished her off with stun ray
plus melee. That felt good.

Still on ID:15, with turn counter at 7698. I have
just ran into... more undead. Blessed the ghuls to
death, and rocked the skeletons. One of them droped
a blessed pair of gauntlets. I wanted to try them
on right away, but I knew they might be 'of peace'
so I didn't. I lured a skeleton away from the pack,
and got him to pick them up, and equip them. Well,
they didn't glow black on him, so I know I'm safe
too. One more point of PV : )

I went back to kill the necromancer and the rest of
the undead, but in their midst was a giant rust
monster. I couldn't remember for sure if darkness
worked on them, so I webbed, then darkness. I was
safe until he decided to panic, I was fighting him
in a corridor, so he couldn't escape. He hit me for
only a few HP's, whew! I guess good PV comes in
handy : )

We got a spellbook of hellish flames, and an exp.
level-up out of it all. Put the four skill increases into
archery, music, stealth, and first aid. We are kind of
running out of good ones now : ) Also, we finally got
that one point of St increase, I was starting to think it
would never go up. Actually, since it increased at an
exp. level-up, it might not be far away from another
'natural' increase. Oh, and I also picked up the papyrus
scroll, and turns are at 7789. That felt like a lot for
just 100 turns!

This is a first for me. I killed a bunch of rats, and
picked up a 'fickle' sickle : D There are some other
items I picked up along the way, but was too cautious
to try. Clothes, that I thought might be 'auto-locking'
for some reason. Cursed gloves, and a mithril ring,
to name a few. While looking through the inventory,
I notice there is a 'satin covered tome'. I don't
remember picking that up! Must have been durning some
heavy fighting, and got lost in the shuffle.

So I spend my last few turns reading it, taking a
chance of going over my turn limit, should it turn
out to be 'earthquake' or something. It turns out
to be baptism of fire, Woot! I finish my few remaining
turns by the down staircase. The next player shall
only have to descend the once, should they choose.
Screen shot will be up in a bit.

Using Bless continuously very wise:
+PV
duration stacks, not overrides
adds same amount of luck as Ankh
trains Ma

I have received the save file, and so I will proceed to play it tomorrow during school (3 days left ftw)

Here's to hoping i don't die, considering i haven't played ADOM in a few days or so, been playing Warcraft III's campaign on hard mode. Fun stuff!

How come Strenght is now at only 15? Does wearing boots reduce strenght too?

Edit: nevermind, I realized it was the sword which got it higher before.

Well, here's the results, as recorded as I played...

CONCLUSION AT BOTTOM, FOR THE LAZY
[LIST]
--Started up the character, and checked out what I had.
--Went down the stairs to I16, received the messages for a tension room and a vortex.
--Found stairs immediately, was prepared to run at the first sign of something out of my league.
--Fought a master ratling thief, and immediately after "My mood darkens". Cursing/doom? I'm not sure, because I have no access to the Guidebook where I am at the moment. Boo for school not sharing their internets.
--Get hit by an acid trap immediately after, taking a small wound, with no item destruction.
--Found two doors, closed or locked I wasn't sure of, and not wanting to bumble into a vortex upon entering one of the rooms, I dove on down to I16.
--145 turns in, before going down the stairs, I receive a MANA boost.
--Climbing down the stairs, I am IMMEDIATELY surrounded by Cave Fishers and their summoner, a DE Wizard. After a few rock throws at the wizard, I think to use Baptism of Fire. Our PV was sufficient protection from the cave fishers attacks, and I only took about 8 damage in the course of killing them.
--I pray to regain the small health and power point loss, and then am forced to move forward to the only path, a closed door.
--Oh, and I gained a Polearm level fighting the Cave Fishers.
--Find a hub room, with 3 more doors to take...how annoying...so I take the bottom right door.
--It loops around to the bottom left door of the hub room, which I try to open....and i get hit by a fireball trap.
--Item Destructions! as follows - Blessed gauntlets, cursed aquamarine ring, uncursed 3-3 medium shield, rusty 1-1 horned helmet, uncursed clothes, wooden 3-1 shield, 3 of 12 3-1d6 arrows
--And we take 2/3rds of our health in damage. OUCH!
--So, in response, i dip the 3 uncursed water i now have into the holy water, use one of the resulting 3 to bless our gloves and equip them, and find out that they give 2 PV. I also equip the blessed nograin ring, and then cast revelation to figure out if they give a resistance.
--They Don't. Try equipping the uncursed mithril ring to check it out, but i don't the mana for another revelation, and am now being attacked by an offscreen hill giant. How mean!
--I back into the corridor, get surrouned by him and a kobold, and proceed to spell sling him to death and whack the kobold.
--I try to continue, but i get hit by yet ANOTHER fireball trap on the next door, but "[my] equipment is protected from the fire by a thin sheet of ice emanating from [my] hands"
--Damn it, the uncursed mithril ring was a ring of ice...if only i had had it before.
--Trying to save resources, and not push on too far, I sit in the small room after the 2nd trap, which apparently contained the downstairs, praying while regening hp and pp.
--Its now turn 871, and I'm trying to decide whether to continue or stay on this floor until the end of my turn...I decide to pray for a few more turns and then head down.
--AMbushed by a lightning lizard as I go down, i scorched him to death and read once from our "Baptism of FIre spellbook", to replenish some uses.
--I immediately find the downstairs on this level, so I know where I can retreat to.
--Exploring the floor, I find a pickaxe! RIght after, walking around, I get a STR increase anda MANA decrease, meaning 1 net strength and 0 net mana gain.
--I decided to read the scroll of "cutme", and found out that it was amnesia, yuck.
--Having finished the level, except for one locked portion, and upon hearing the sounds of a vortex, I dive down another level.
--In this level, I get ambushed by an acid vortex, but taking the time to think, I utilize darkness and then smack it to death. I also notice that the scroll deleted our knowledge of what the wands were, and a potion or two, and our Amulet of Perserverence now says Golden Amulet. Sorry!
--WOOOOOOOO. Upon continuing, I scorch to death an outlaw and receive "Uncursed Medium Shield [72s]". Turned out to be +7, +2. Yayuh.
--Ambushed by a lightning lizard, minor equipment destruction, the only bad one losing our long bow 2-2
I bless and eat the lightning lizard corpse, on the off chance that we get the resistance, and get the message "Shocking taste". WE HAVE SHOCK RESISTANCE, woo.
--Just in time to run into a lightning vortex. Didn't need it because of darkness though.
--*DING* LVL14! First Aid maxed, 1 level of Music, Archery, and another of Music.
--With very few turns left, and very little PP, I decided to regen it all with the turns left and throw down a revelation for the next person.
--Results: You are Poison Resistant. You are Shock Resistant. You naturally heal 1 hit point every 49 turns. You naturally recover 1 mana point every 59 turns.

IN CONCLUSION-
Lost some equipment(Fireball trap), gained something new that is very nice (Medium 7-2 Adamantium Shield), gained shock resistance, gained a polearm level, Mithril Ring = Ring of Ice. Increased to LVL14. Finished the dive right before going down the stairs to I20.

I'll edit that post on reading further.
"My mood darkens" - be simpler. Just Bless spell ended :)
"MANA decrease" - do NOT cast when low on pp, just die if no other solution. :)
Shock Resistance - good.
Requipping amulet would reidentify it.

First Aid - not a big fan of it, natural training supposed to be enough.

I20 - great. No chance for the weak.

First Aid - not a big fan of it, natural training supposed to be enough.

I20 - great. No chance for the weak.At least on my turn there wasn't much to train besides FA and skills that'll never be used. So it makes sense to get that.

And we really are diving quite fast - no wonder we've got the most powerful PC at this point when comparing the leagues.

Whew! That firball trap had me worried for a minute
there, but it seems like we came out of it in pretty
good shape. I don't think we would have tried those
gloves for a long while, unless the gauntlets were
destroyed, so we actually came out ahead in that way.

The adamantium shield is a fantastic find. We had
maxed out the shield marks we could get with that
miserable +3 DV it was giving us. We can get shield
marks again! Yay! With 7 DV points, we should be
deflecting attacks all over the place.

I started to leave a note yesterday, about what my
guesses were, as to item identification. I decided
not to, and kind of regret that now. I will list
some of my thoughts now though:

Mithril ring - rings of ice. Bit late on that one : )
No grain ring - wedding ring
Bronze wand - gold detection. Only that one is 6 st.

Mottled/black potion - There aren't that many low level
potions that weigh 2 stones. Usually, when I get one
early, it is 'cure poison'. We have two though, let's
hope the other one is cure corruption ; )

Carpe Diem scroll - Identify, those are the most common
scroll in the game. If we have two of them, this early
in the game, it is a high probability. Might be worth
blessing the cursed one, and reading.

I also have some other thoughts that might be helpful:

It's hard to remember to constantly bless yourself,
but it's helps more than you might think (maybe even
with equipment destruction). Also, it is a very
powerful spell to use against undead. With out ring
of stun resistance gone, we should be cautious with
ghuls. The ones we fight from now on, will be rather
high level, and could potentially kill us. Setting
tactics to coward, and blessing them should be the
safest way of killing them. Maybe save some spells
just for that, but as a priest, we should find more
of that spell soon enough.

To train St to 18, we must be at 'strained!' status.
It does reduce speed, and lower DV, so it is a risk.
Remember though, if you are in a tight spot, you
can always drop the majority of the junk we are
packing around. Most of it is worthless, other than
for St training, and we can always get more useless
junk : ) Being 'strained!' while descending stairs
can reduce your HP's by about 10, so be careful of
that also.

To train the Ma stat, we should frequently cast spells.
You don't have to cripple the PC, just an occasional
'bless', or 'lesser devine touch' to keep it in a
constant state of regeneration. If you need to abuse
the Ma stat, to survive, go ahead. The Ma stat is
easily trained, and we can always get the point back.
Having said that, do try to avoid abusing it if you
can, gaining a really high Ma stat, can make the game
a lot easier.

We don't have the gemology skill, and we won't be
doing any smithing anytime soon, so unfortunately,
we can't exploit the pickaxe fully. However, we could
use it to generate some rocks that might actually
STACK : ) As I see it, we should just use it until
it breaks, then scrap it. It's better for our carried
burden, to actually be useful.

Any uncursed weapon we encounter, should immediately
be wield identified. There are no 'auto-locking'
weapons, and an ego weapon is right around the corner,
I can feel it. Who knows, maybe that pick axe is a
weeping pick axe of devastation : )

When kicking down doors, remember that you can drop
all of your inventory a few spaces away. It's a bit
irritating to have to do it several times in a row,
but it can save precious items.

But what's there to hope? It's not like we'd get corruptions anytime soon. I'd rather quickling or troll blood.

In response to abusing the mana stat, I find it to be perfectly viable, and something that I am comfortable doing. That being said, I try to avoid it if i can, and in a game like this, I try to minimize the risks i take by abusing spells.

Gut:

I had the same conclusion about the carpe diem scrolls, I would've done it myself but we were down to only a single holy water, which i wanted to save for if we found more uncursed water. About the fireball traps, yeah, i thought about dropping all of my stuff before trying to kick them, but unfortunately BOTH trap went off when i simply tried to open the door. Talk about bad luck! After that, I avoided doors like the plague if i could. About Bless, yea, it is hard to remember, I remember recasting it so many times on the Dwarf Priest that was my first character to reach the CoC. (just a little self-promotion, but it took me very little time to beat the game for the first time =P I blame a dozen years of RPG-playing and great luck, namely an early precrown with the RIng of Immunity, heh...i have yet to win again though =)

Hmm...Just thought I'd add to what I'd originally said, I used thrown rocks some to boost the skill, but my modus operandi was usually melee'ing the really weak enemies and utilizing a combination of mainly Baptism of Fire, with sparse uses of Nether Bolt and Hellish Flames for the harder-hitting enemies.

But yeah, regardless of any circumstances regarding our characters, we can and should say that we can still kick Fire's butt =). GO WATER!

Hahaha, of course you won't Gut! Because I'm expecting you to win this pool (after we crush the other leagues in the depth of our dive) and then cruise to victory in the finals! Of course, talking is better than the silence that will ensue, but its a worthwhile cost. Anyways, I really do want to get this underway. After a short ADOM vacation I've begun getting remotivated to play, and this has partially been of assistance in that endeavor.

In parting, remember, the Water League is the most dominant of them all! We can put out the harshest Fire, crumble the hardest Earth, and the Wind? That's just a symptom of the other planetary bodies trying to harness our awesome power!

So I am starting my game now. It's progress is logged here:

So my turn starts as we are about to take the dive to I20.

10241 run into a green hag. Fling it with stones, but our shield is now cursed, also ran into a dark elven archer around here and ate it's corpse (some might not like this, but well dex is good for our flinged stones, our to took a hit though. Sigh wasn't thinking straight. Guess we have no morgia to counter this :P)

10479 ouch ran into a corruptor, fling it to death with rocks no problem

10600 (or so) ouch! a pit viper trap. I book cast hellish flames on the vipers after running them into a corridor

11403 I've just slain a necromancer and it's pack of minions (had to pray two times for hp and for pp after a skeletal warrior joined their fray), suddenly I hear a wind! and an acid vorted appears I've already fully explored I20 (and found a spellbook of cure seriuos wounds) so I decide to make my way on to I21!

11417 the air is filled with the smell of carrots, sadly we have no juice :( I decide to read a bit and pray

11513 while reading I hear a burping sound. I decide to go forward. I find the stairs to I22. No diving yet though, we are not reckless are we?

11733 I've spent the last 200 turns or so battling white worms. I wonder if the next person will have to deal with these.

12017 I've been bashing worms when I suddenly realize the turn counter... Sorry guys :/ Oh well, on to the next victim. Have fun with them worms.

Covenant
05-27-2008, 02:10 PM
Okay, commencing my turn now.

I decide initially that I'll end my turn on go 14000, to keep things even - technically, this will mean I'll play something like 1990 turns instead of 2000, but I think it'll be worth it to keep it easy for everyone to remember when to stop playing. Also, I know Kenny is a girl. But I've used the masculine pronouns.

I:21
These white worms look somewhat fierce, and as I haven't yet found my feet, I decide to descend the stairs to get a fresh perspective on things.

I:22
Stalking through the dim corridors of the 22nd level of the so-called 'Infinite' dungeon, I quickly found the stairs to the next level, along with a goblin and an uncursed adamantium small shield. Handy if the medium one ever gets destroyed, so I keep it. I'm keeping at strained! too, for our nascent strength increases. Everything is proceeding smoothly until - Oh no! I round a corner and get ambushed by a Slow Shadow and a Quickling. Is this it for Kenny!?

... No. Baptism of Fire takes them both out (perhaps a little wasteful, but I couldn't see what else was lurking in that room).

Further exploration reveals a ratling warlord, who again worries me, as I feel I don't know yet exactly what Kenny is capable of - especially considering I typically like to go Berserk with my characters and just punch everything to death. But my fears prove unfounded - despite being disarmed after missing a couple of throws, some quick bashing makes short work of him and his cohorts, netting me a pink potion.

I open another door... to find a greater mummy! Oh no! Another Baptism of Fire is lost. But from his goblin friend I did find us another uncursed scroll of Carpe Diem, which I suspect, as some of you have similarly ventured, is 'Identify'.

In a large room I encounter an evil dark elven wizard, who proceeds to summon a horde of chittering tarantulas. I accordingly proceed to summon a nether bolt, and end him and his spidery friends, picking up some blessed [0, +3] boots in the process which replace our old [-1, +2] heavy boots. Our PV's not looking too bad right now.

An assassin appears... checking my arsenal of spells, I find nothing useful enough to be worth using without being so useful that it would be wasted on an assassin. Then I spie Bless! Blessing myself, I feel no worries about taking on the assassin in melee, even with a weak Hurthling. He quickly falls.

In my absence, spiders have made a lair somewhere on the western side of the level. Hoping to sneak past them, I make my way to the stairs, only to find myself pursued by the mate of the ratling warlord I had destroyed! This brute is deadlier - obviously the female of the species - and takes me down to 80hp before I manage to destroy it. It carries no reward for my efforts, save my continued existence. I descend the stairs...

I:23
I again quickly find the downward stairs - but something in me forces me to explore the whole level. This proves unwise, as a combination of a Fireball trap and a swordsman then moving across the fireball trap quickly devours half of my remaining health. I find a necklace of the silver tongue, but it seems poor reward for my scorched skin. On resting to regain my health, however, Kenny's strength finally rises! 17! Not exactly Conan the Barbarian, but getting there. My spirits buoyed, I bless myself and continue on. The hoary touch of a Shadow Troll provides a tense moment, but I vanquish it without losing my newly-acquired strength and cook its corpse, thinking perhaps the group may favour health regeneration in favour of toughness at a later date.

A fierce battle with a stone golem and a horde of claw bugs propels me to the dizzying heights of level 15. Not having much reasonable choice in the matter, I raise Herbalism, Climbing, Archery, and Stealth. The latter two would only raise by the smallest of increments, and the other options available were in similar dire straits, or even more useless than Herbalism and Climbing.

For the talent... This may not prove popular, but I went with Miser. I honestly think Treasure Hunter will improve our chances - if we find something great like 7LBs or such, it'll help us immeasurably more than an extra 6HP or 2 speed, which seemed to be the alternate options. And if we weren't intending to go for it at some point, why did we pick Alert? I was sorely tempted by 'Healthy' though, I'll admit.

Then all hell breaks loose. I get hounded down a corridor by a dwarven chaos knight and a hell hound. They eventually go down. I'm cooking a displacer beast corpse when a Gelatinous Cube appears. Right next to me. Thankfully I Nether Bolt his ass to ice cubes before he paralyzes me. But then an ogre lord appears. I run toward the downward stairs. I find... A Berserker King. Oh come on! I knew I should have got 'Healthy' - I'm still at 60hp. I decide to just do my best to delay him while I fire bolts toward him. I 'Web' him, but he shrugs it off. Thankfully, there's a good 5 or so web-filled spaces he has to advance through.

I fire Nether Bolt. He advances. I fire again. He advances. I fire - he gets stuck in the web! I fire again - but he's still coming! Still stuck, but he seems impervious. There's one square between us - any second now that King is going to come over here and turn me into a gooey paste... Wait... He's dead! Just before he reached me, and just before I ran out of PP, he finally died. Wow. No items, but at least I'm alive. I continue on toward the stairs...

I rest a while to regain HP, but then the door is opened by the Ogre Lord. Rats. Nothing for it - I'll have to go down. This floor really doesn't seem to like me...

I:24
And oh joy, here's a vampire on I:24. I really don't remember the ID being this hard! Hellish Flames makes short work of the undead fiend, thankfully. In the southern room I find some cursed Bone Bracers - I don't remember any bracers being bad, so I take the risk of wearing them. It's honestly not competetive play.

And they're Bracers of Toughness +4! Hurray! Our Max HP has risen to 137. Not bad at all. Another potion of healing... I find the stairs and camp out there for a while, reading books to replenish castings I've used. Check through our armor, and after trying on some uncursed gloves, I improve our PV situation a little further. I finally realise I can't gain any more Strength being Strained!, so having wasted some of our food supply (my bad guys) I finally drop some things - crappy weapons (regular battle axes/hand axes, the armour I replaced, a spare spellbook of light, etc) and reach Strained. That's enough for now - I don't want to get too radical. If anyone wants the items I left, they're still on the level - a Green Hag moved them, but you should be able to find them.

I sit on the stairs to regenerate the last few HP as I await the end of my turn, knowing that I have not failed in my task.

FLV and save file in the following post, to avoid going over the character limit.

SUMMARY:

Gains:
- Bracers of Toughness (+4)
- Better Boots: [0, +3] over [-1, +2]
- Another ID scroll, plus various UNided scrolls/potions.
- Level 15/Miser talent.
- Better Gloves: Gloves of Smiting [0, +3] over [0, +2] (+ 0 damage though).
- Blessed Wooden Ring (Fire Resistance) - I revelation'd myself before and after wearing to work out what it was. I propose we wear this rather than the ring of Ice.
- Cooked Displacer Beast Corpse - Teleports if eaten.
- +1 Strength
- +1 Mana

Losses:
- Quite a few castings of Nether Bolt, Hellish Flames, and Baptism of Fire (Though I read the books again to regain the latter two).
- Food. Getting a bit low on that, with Strained!

Thoughts for those who follow after:
- Shall we eat the Claw Bug or Shadow Troll corpses? I vote Aye to both, personally.
- You're on Berserk, so be careful.
- The Food situation isn't so great. Be on the lookout for alternate food sources.
- I tried to raise our bows skill by a little, as arrows are plentiful and come in useful ego varieties. Didn't get much opportunity, but it might be worth a concerted effort to do so.
- Given that we have both Alert and Miser, probably would be wise to pick up Treasure Hunter. Hope nobody's too pissed about that.
- We're on I:24 now, bit of a jump from I:21.

On a personal note, I'm with Gut on his earlier sentiment - no competitive play from me until I'm in the final two, if I ever get that high. I want to see how far we can get with Kenny. This is really good fun.

Good job! And I agree. I want to absolutely smoke the other leauges! woo

EDIT: Haha, I just saw what you mean Gut. You'll have to let me know what you think about our skill levels =p I take criticism well, you know! After the league finishes, ofc...
EDIT 2: Random question, but does using unarmed combat train strength? Because I started a human monk, went to the SMC for a couple turns, then went to the ID, and after having done ID:1, then 2, then 1, I have already received 2 strength increases, from 15 to 17, w/out ever reaching the burdened status. Is it maybe athletics? although I've never seen it work so rapidly before...

Here I am! I've completed my session. Bad news, I survived. Good news coming up.

As soon as I descended, I got an ogre lord+gargoyle ambush. No match for me. But soon after I bumped into a tension room of giant rust monsters. Um, no thanks! I ran for it. Luckily a kobold jumped in before the bastard so I was able to descend through the already explored stairs without having a big ass rust monster following up.
From here it became a little better. I found an uncursed orcish helmet ([+3, +2; Pe -2], pretty nice, eh?) on an ogre body. Then I found a bottle of holy water. At this point I had 3 uncursed bottles but I decided to try and collect some more. But I forgot to dip the holy into the uncursed, be sure to do this if you want to.
I found another displacer corpse as an emergency teleport. There were a multitude of nasty monsters through the way but I found a few nice things. First, a large addy shield (86s) At this point, I decided to experiment with the scrolls, I figured that KAPOW and Carpe Diem are identify and uncursing. I uncursed the medium addy shield to equip our new large addy shield (+9, +3, -1 to hit) . But soon I regretted it... a little, as I found two spellbooks: Veil of the Gods (Invis) and Remove Curse! (I actually uncursed the Remove Curse book with the spell itself. :)) I had a NDE to a claw bug but I survived. I repeat, I survived.
I hope I didn't forget anything from me. Oh, yeah, Kenny got lvl16, I invested a little in Archery and Cooking but there wasn't much to improve. Mana increased by a bit btw, despite the fact that I manacasted a bit (and look at how stupid I was playing, I drained almost all of Hellish flames as I got paranoid and went overboard with the pyromania) As for the next person: there are a few lowly monsters next to you, plus the staircase. :)
Anything nooby/forgetful I did, entirely mea culpa, not trying to compete just yet. :) I hope I uploaded the correct file, and I hope I typed up everything in the correct order.

Looks like we made some really nice progress in that session.
Improved PV is sweet. St and Ma increases are cool. Finding
bracers of To are VERY coll. Most importantly, we continue
with our greatest strength... NOT DYING! Super cool!

There is just one thing that pains me, I wish we had gotten
that ogre lord on our kill list. Man that would have been
sweet! No giant can see in the dark, so he would have been
an easy kill... oh well, next time : )

Since we picked up the 'miser' talent, we probably should
consider getting 'treasure hunter'. We had plenty of luck
in finding nice items so far, so maybe 'treasure hunter'
will amplify our luck. Hopefully.

We are closing in on shield skill 6. It will be a nice
benefit to get those 2 extra DV points. Our PV is higher
than our DV, that's hilarious! I'm not in favor of eating
the shadow troll corpse, even for the increased health
regen.

> let me know what you think about our skill levels =p

The best skill is to not die, and in that respect, we do
indeed have the most skilled lot of the bunch. Our only
death was a fellow that doesn't play hurthlings, and they
do take some getting used to. The only thing I have really
cringed at, was item destruction (which turned out couldn't
be avoided), not killing some monsters (like ogre lords!)
in darkness, and non-constant blessing (while we have them
to spare anyway). I think our collective goofs have been
very minimal, and that plays a big part in why Water League
is the best!

> does using unarmed combat train strength

I've never heard of it, if it does. I think the Athletics
skill gets the credit here.

Now the game goes back to Maul for some more power up.

Personal surviving is still the prime objective, i guess, so...
(!)I've blessed poga & potion of troll blood, drank them(naturally heal one hit point every 41 turns).

Descended.
I29.
Annihilator & Berserker Empreror... I guess i've forgotten to turn on my luck :) Cowardly baptism helps.
Spellbook of Light. Shields and polearms at 6 lvl.
Readed Spellbook of Baptism of Fire twice. Now we have to use other spells...
I30.
Spellbook of Cure Light Wounds. Mixed tension room(black unicorn, 2x dark elven priestess, troll berserker). phew... used baptism on unicorn(most damaging spell). Almost 20000 XP...
I31.
Werewolf lord.
Spellbook of Invisibility.
17 lvl - music, climbing.
Polearms & Shields 7 lvl. Werewolf lord dead. Spent more than 1000 moves fighting...
Spellbook of Cure Critical Wounds.
Trown away gold and some cursed stones to move from overburdened to strained!.
I32.
Closed door. Spent remaiting 120 turns to read spellbooks. Cure light wounds, 2x Light, Cure Serious Wounds dissappeared. Cure Critical taken a bit more that i was expecting, sorry, M:18006.

I wish to remind all Water League members, that we have
the darkness spell. It is quite useful against (I think) all
humanoids, and animals. The giant rust monsters, ogre
lords, and such, are free exp. points for us.

Locate yourself in a wide open space (so the monster
has an escape route), and bash heads with no risk. I can't
complain though, we continue to grow in power, and show
rightful dominance over all other leagues.

Best of all. Still, no more deaths! Man I'm loving this!

DeSt
05-27-2008, 11:15 PM
And we have darkness with 1115 castings and 3pp cost - use it as often as needed.

And there will be some deaths if we face more monsters like that unicorn :)

gut
05-27-2008, 11:20 PM
The 'veil of the gods' spell will increase our chances
by a considerable margin.

EDIT:
I have just read a game report from one of the 'lesser'
Leagues : ) It seems as though the 'dull' potion has been
ID'd as booze, just a heads-up on that.

That got me wondering though, as soon as we ID our
inventory, all Leagues will know a horde. Shall we be
so generous with the info, to post it for everyone. I
say 'YES'. Let it not be said, that the Water League
is not generous in it's superiority : )

Oh yes, one more thing. I realize that over confidence
may become a bit of a problem for us. How could it not!
Serious mistakes are a possibility (though, certainly not
a probability for us), and a small amount of caution should
be still be shown. If for nothing more, than to keep the
other Leagues from thinking us 'show-offs' : )

Personally I would like to be a bit more frugal with the Holy Water - we never know when we might really need it (finding a cursed RoDS springs to mind...) though the fact that we have Remove Curse helps in this, somewhat. I think any further identifying should wait until we have a BIG pile of stuff (i.e, Strained!, dropping on a square, getting Strained! again, dropping on square, etc, then picking it all up so we're overburdened) if possible, and definitely only when we have more water.

You're right about the Ogre Lord guts - but I rarely play about with Darkness normally, as it feels a bit cheap, and given my low HP and the escalating sense of danger on the level, I don't think it was a great loss. I'm more impressed by Ars' Berserker Emperor + Annihilator combination than I would be by an Ogre Lord.

Also, who else is in for non-competitive tactics? I want to see if we can reach I:100, or at least SIL.

Also also, I think my post was the longest by far - sorry about that, I do have a tendency to dramatise and go off on one.

Congratulations on being the first to achieve a 6-digit score, Ars. Unless the Fire league catches up big time you may be the only league to ever do so. Getting to level 18 is very impressive too.

Ars
05-28-2008, 06:44 PM
It's just such a lame way to die... After clearing a threat room of the dragons, I get killed by the last one who was at critically injured at the time. One more healing spell, using spells instead of throwing rocks to kill it faster, pretty much any little thing could have prevented that... Carelessness FTW.

Also were the winners determined by highest scores, or just the last players to survive?

Grey

Winners are determined firstly by who survives, though any draw in that will be settled by who got deepest, who got the most xp and who lasted the most turns (in that order).

Thats a shame man. Also, I'm totally for non-competitive tactics to see how far we can get. Even if i'm one of the last two, i'd be willing to continue non-competitive, as I have more interest in continuing the dive than in a starting place in Mana league =p

Man, I really would've loved to have those dragons on

Uneventful turn. Descended a level, used darkness to
milk an 'animated armor' for many missile marks. Found
a spellbook of neutralize poison, and killed a few more
monsters. Ate the claw bug corpses, for the De boost.

Kenny is now standing beside of the down stairs. All the
next player has to do is just descend, and survive 2000
turns. Of course they can descend as far as they like
also, we should be able to handle almost anything.
Here's to not screwing each other over!

Ah, I see that it is my turn now...I'll make sure to play it sometime tonight...hopefully my luck with my monk will roll over to this guy, because I've found two RoDS's with the monk, and I have never found even one of them before. I've also gotten a pool wish, and I've only done UD, PC, DD, DDL, Pyramid, and CoC to lvl13.

Meh, i'll start in about an hour...

Here goes! editing as i go...

I33

Examined Kenny.
Cooked our giant rat corpses, 1 was ruined.
Read our "Hellish Flames" book, it disappears, we gain ~150 usage.
Bookcast a few Cure Critical Wounds, to regen mana while I do a little praying.
I descend the stairs 337 turns in.

I34

Down stairs are located in the next room from the up stairs, I have to search for a secret door to explore more of the level.
375...I sense imminent danger...but the feeling passes =P
Explored the level in its entirety in around 800 turns.
Notables finds - Spellbook of Remove Curse, Mithril Scale Mail (-1, -2)[+2, +6] (!!!!!)
Pray some more, 1000 turns have now passed.
Spend 159 more turns reading what was left of one of the two Remove Curse spellbooks.

I35

Advance to LEVEL 18! *Spell Costs are now Reduced by 25%*
Put points in - Archery x4 (yay 4 more points)
Talent chosen - Steel Skin (2 more PV)
After killing a few, I find the down stairs, but with 680 turns left, I still have time to finish exploring!
Run into a Black Wizard who curses us! Gasp, not our brown gem! The Bastard!
Continue exploring, turning an Ancient White Dragon to ashes with one Baptism of Fire (god i love that spell), along with a Lich and a Black Slayer.
I kill an Ogre King, with the help of Darkness, but sadly no phat lewts from him.
While I am heading to the downstairs, having finished exploring I find out that I have been corrupted. You wanna guess what I got corrupted with? Yea, thats right. Corrupted tissue! Yay for fast healing!
I accidently PRAY. Dang finger slipped!
Fighting a Berserker Emperor! Darkness utilized...Stealth skill +1...Swords lvl7...kill him, no loot
Fighting other various monsters as they come to me by the stairs, as i have a passage without a door leading to it. Utilizing darkness, kill another Berserker Emperor, send a Ghost Lord running, and kill other various monsters as my turns run out.

THINGS TO KNOW: Better Armor (Mithril Armor 2-6), very few uses of Baptism of Fire left, used up Hellish Flames book

Save and details to come soon.

Incredible turn! All of my thoughts are ending in
exclaimation points, so that's how I'll type them!

> Ancient White Dragon to ashes with one Baptism of Fire

I laughed!

> Shields 8 +16 excellent

I cried! (It's so beautiful!)

> Mithril Scale Mail (-1, -2)[+2, +6] (!!!!!)

I shouted with glee!

> Run into a Black Wizard who curses us!

I nearly soil my armor!

> Gasp, not our brown gem!

Oh, just an item cursing. Whew!

In the end, I would say we really powered up in
that round. I was just kidding, when I was talking
smack in the 'discussion thread', but I'm starting
to think we might actually get the Sceptre. That
would be sooo cool!

Actually, there is little reason why we can't get
it. This challenge is not nearly as hard as 'iron
man', where you have to immediately descend upon
finding a staircase. If others can do THAT, then
we can do THIS. WE CAN DO THIS!

ps. I love having an Ancient White Dragon in our
kill list!

Grey
05-29-2008, 03:17 AM
You got another 6 PV overall and 25% reduced spell costs and faster regen. And you're able to kill ancient white dragons and berserker emperors without problems...

Muwahaha!
Anyways, here's Kenny.

PS. I think my ADOM karma is high, because on my monk i have 2 RoDS's having never generated a single one before. In response to that, and the Bracers of War, I decided not to rename her 'Danica'. So now i have a rampaging monk named "HuMon5". hehe.

PPS. Those emperors hurt us some, but not seriously. A little darkness to whack them down to severely injured, with a follow up spell to finish them so they didn't run, did the trick.

Wow, impressive turn! Nice playing there.

Still the low casts on Baptism of Fire might spell our impending doom! Get careful now guys, we are going all the way in to the bleedin' nest of vipers.

Some equipment ID's, graciously provided by the Fire League.

silver wand - cold
thick potion - cure corruption
rainbow potion - raw mana
opal ring - ring of damage
electrum ring - 'of the fish'

...and I think:
blazing potion - potion of mana
light blue -oil of rust removal

For our collective amusement, here are some recent posts by
Fire League'ers:

[Fire League - Equipment ID]
> rainbow appears to be raw mana and thick gives you were
> cleaned message - apparently cure poison

Believe it or not, they were drinking potions of cure corruption,
while trying to get CORRUPTED! They wanted to copy the Water
League's fast healing corruption... by quaffing potions of cure
corruption?! Oh boy! : D

> try uncursed potion on taste either strength or PoGa
> (memmory lists as PoGA, sniff)

Ha ha ha ha! We could have told them that! In fact, I
think we did! Oh, those silly Fire League'ers! : D

[Fire League - Basic Tactics]
> ran into a dark elven priestess and realised she can see in darkness

Really?!! A *DARK* elf that can see in the DARK?!! Ha ha ha aha ha ha!
Is it any wonder, there are only three of them left?!! To think that
now competitive tactics are an option! How fast are they going to die
now?!

[Fire League - Advanced Tactics]
> Shit, realise I don't have many steps left to get to the
> stairs - run!
<snip>
> manage to make it to the stairs with just 10 turns left!

Oh, my ribs hurt!

[Fire League - Long Term Strategy Masters]
> Rocks should be our primary offense to be honest. Not far from
> level 15 - missile talents are definitely the way to go.

<next turn>

> bolt of them to gain lv15 (choose quick).

Oh my goodness! My side is about to split, reading this stuff!

Grey

Quick leads to Quick Shot - do you really need that spelled out for you? 10% faster attacks is better than about 5% better damage.

I can't wait to lay the smack-down on you in the League of Mana... if you even get that far ;)

Besides you are wrong about cure corruption potion, i did googled exact message. That WAS cure poison.

I would have taken quick on first occassion. I've got occasion I picked it. Grey has his priorities, I have mine that is the whole fun, isn't it. Or you found more fun of telling your slaves how to play?

Awww, slaves? Who woulda thought taking (or not taking =P) advice makes you a slave? Meh, I decided on my own that I wanna see how deep we could dive...

I had typed up another half-page of taunts. I logged in to post
them, and what do I see before my eyes? A very pleasant surprise!
I adore that I have drawn Soirana into this writhing mass of
smack talking.

Started out: I don't understand all of this rivalry stuff.
Midway, it was: You guys found downloadable hallucenagen?
Now it's: Your humble effort to survive.. [Fire League rules!]

I love it!

> you are wrong about cure corruption potion

Yeah, I figured it had a good chance of being cure poison.
They both wiegh 2s, and give similar messages. I was talking
trash, you know, spinning things... for fun : )

> Never heard of roleplaying? That is LAWFUL priest. Not a
> chaotic minded gutless orc thief of yours

You didn't learn of the regen corruption from sneaking peeks
at our thread? You are NC at BEST! : )

> Or you found more fun of telling your slaves how to play?

They have influence me, more than I them. Maul was saying
long ago, about competitive tactics being uneeded. I think
his exact phrasing was something like 'the RNG will take care
of the killing'. We in the Water League, learn from each other!
Maybe that, more than anything else, puts us a step ahead : D

I'll say one thing for the Fire League. They have a lot of bravery.
Of course I'm not refering to the fact, that they have dived to
ID 37 with a PC, that wouldn't be fit to wipe Kenny's backside.
That's not bravery, that's stark raving insanity!

No, I'm refering to how much courage it must take, to continue in
posting .vlg files! Showing for all the leagues to see, how pathetic
their poor 'hootchy' character really is. I will not pollute the Water
League thread, with too much info on the vile 'hootchy' creature. In
the interest of laughs though, here are a few degenerate samples of
this miserable wretch, from their last game report:

Just a quick, and totally non-biased, summary of the different Leagues'
progress:

Water League - Rd 1 saw heroic and amazing skill, from all Water
League players. Unfortunately, the RNG struck, and sent Kato an out of
depth monster. We mourned the loss, but were forced to carry on.

Rd 2 again saw many valiant deeds, worthy to be sung throughout the ages.
With the many and varied skills each Water League'er brought, their
PC emerged from the pack, as the best and most well-rounded PC in the
game. We sadly lost one of our most excellent players, as Ars expired,
surrounded by the dead bodies of many blue dragons. A true warriors
death, none can refute!

Rd 3 has started off well for the Water League. No surprise there : )
No member has died, and maybe this shall be the round where none do.
The Water League hurthling is growing stronger by the turn, and well
on the way, to retrieving the Sceptre,

Air League - Rd 1, I can not remember all of the manner of deaths the
Air League'ers suffered (there were so many, how could I ?!). This
round saw the selection of skills like 'strong thrower', as opposed
to (just for example, the Water League's choice of) the PV talents.
The skilled warrior Tempak fell to overwhelming odds, with no shame.
The (apparently curse/doomed!) Baranor also fell, to the RNG mainly.

Rd 2 was more efficient for the Air League. They lost many more
players, than they did in round one. There were bright moments however,
M_bowwarrior displayed a true warrior's never-say-die spirit, and it
saw him through a tough situation, that would have tested even the
best of us! Unfortunately, Subconcious, kupico, Silfir, and Lich, all
suffered horrible (and perhaps slightly unfair) deaths.

Rd 3 was a time for reviving fallen warriors. Silfir was revived, only
to die again (!). M_bowwarrior was thrown into the Abyss. This leaves
only Lich and reich, to slug it out for what is obviously going to be
a very short end-game.

Earth League - Rd 1 saw JSuvanto die to a very tough dark orc, a tough
early-game monster. No disgrace in that, as all ADOM'ers have early
game deaths to those powerful monsters. Smite was unable to participate,
but that still counts as a loss, so two Earth League'ers gone in the
first round.

Rd 2 was a round of death for the Earth League. They lost very skilled
players in Evil Knievel, eowolf, and Oliphaunt. I see no real flaw in
strategy that lead to this, mainly just the law of averages. ADOM is
a tough game, and one has to expect losses. (Which calls to notice,
once again, the tremendous spirit the Water League has shown! It's
simply amazing to have lost only two Water League'ers, despite all
the trials we have faced!).

Rd 3 - It is my displeasure to report that in this round, Moloch was
eliminated. There was a bit of confusion in the Earth League, as to
the proper game reporting procedures, once the chaos gate had opened.
(Oh how thankful I am... to be a Water League'er!) I'm sure Moloch
would make no excuses though, and we all honor a fallen warrior. It is
now down to Nezur and PeanutGod, and they seem to be resorting to all
sorts of uncivilized behaviors. Interesting, in a train-wreck sort of
a way.

Fire League - Now don't laugh! Well, at least not yet : ) Let's do
the review first, at least. Rd 1, saw riktikticheck fall to pit vipers.
A situation like that can happen to anyone, so there's nothing out
of the normal there... or is there?. I have to wonder, if being
associated with such a miserable league, caused riktikticheck to just
make up that story. I do believe that he just wanted to get out of the
Fire League as quickly as possible (I know that's what I would have
done in his place!).

Next up, a Fire League'er suicided, and he even admitted it! (I can't
say that blame him, really. Were I a Fire League'er, I would have also
suicided at the first opportunity!) He says it was an 'accident', but
I don't believe that for one second. You see, I know vogonpoet to be
an excellent player (he has given me tips in the past. Enabling a
victory where defeat would have been inevitable.) If he 'accidentally'
shot himself with divine wrath, I'll eat my keyboard!

Next there were a few no-shows. Upon seeing they had been lumped in
the Fire League, Kingsdragon, and ElectricalFire immediately changed
their handles, and deleted their old ones, never to be touched again.
Thus proving they were the smartest Fire League'ers of all! 2 more
down!

Rd 2 saw Orbic fall, but his turn proceeded Grey's turn. I suspect
that Grey was already using cheap and underhanded tactics, in clear
violation of the rules. He did place a curse upon Orbic's turn, and
probably the whole league as well. No dishonor goes to Orbic for his
death, just a small amount of dishonor, for being associated with the
Fire League in general.

Rd 3 revealed the Fire League to be the rolling disaster that I knew
it was from the start. They turned upon each other like a pack of rabid
dogs, tearing each other to shreds, for the smallest scrap! Truly
disgraceful. Grey and Soirana apparently made a combined effort, to
take deepshock out of the game, and leave the spoils of victory for
themselves to share. Horrible! Now they plan to join forces, in an
effort to rival the mighty Water League. Pathetic. They will turn
upon one another, as soon as they encounter the slightest difficulty.

WATER LEAGUE RULES!!!

I can see that your madness has affected your ability to count and not just your deranged judgement. Water League isn't even finished its second round yet. Do you even know what game you're playing?! Of course it's just like Water League to tarry behind like this, cautiously watching the other leagues and learning from their mistakes. Why they haven't even gotten as deep in the ID as a league that has only 2 players in it!

I do believe that he just wanted to get out of the

I understand perfectly, gut - your natural inferiority drives you away from those of power and authority. All you can do is try to pathetically attack them from the shadows. You would not last five minutes in the league of Fire - put simply, you could not stand the heat. So really, I do understand fully how you could not stand beside such noble warriors whose bright flames only serve to illuminate your own deficiencies. I'd almost pity you if your entire existence didn't fill me with disgust.

Water League, I do advise you all to beware. The Chaos Gate will be opened soon and when it does, remember to watch your backs. Treachery will be on the mind of every player, and none can resist it for long. Some have no intentions of resisting it at all.

Whether we would or wouldn't - irrelevant. All we know, in the current situation the candles of your inferior lives will be extinguished before long. Life came out of Water, but Water can also wash away the unworthy. You, that is.
(It'd be interesting to see if the Mana league will have a retinue of less experienced players.)

EDIT: It is so obvious anyways. Fire has the least believers. Two of those who initially placed their faith in Fire now turned away from it. Your flames are soon to be no more.

I can't wait until my turn now. I feel like my ADOM-fu (credits to whoever said that, its stuck in my head now) feels really high now. Ofc, I still need to make the regular blood sacrifices to the RNG, you never know when she might change her mind...

gut

Due to the 'lesser' league's abilities to destroy themselves, we find
OURselves in an awkward position. The only league to remain unfinished,
is the Earth League, no surprise there. Now what shall we do? Make
the other Leagues sit upon their hands, and watch as we retrieve the
Sceptre. That has it's own special appeal, doesn't it? Or shall we play
competitively, to speed our deaths?

I have thought much about this, and I think we should make the other
leagues watch us, no matter how long we take. There are three reasons
for this:

First, it shall be good for them, to see how things SHOULD be done!
Had they only taken the 'path of light' as the Water League did, perhaps
their players would not have expired so quickly.

Secondly, have we not earned the right, to play as WE wish? Through
cooperative, and inspired play, we achieve greater hieghts, than all
leagues. With that great power, comes great reward! If we fancy to
take another week, we shall take another week.

Thirdly, I don't really think it would be faster, to play competitively. When
I consider the fortitude of each Water League'er, I doubt any would fall
to underhanded tactics. We would each find ingenius ways to survive
any situation that comes our way. The only death ahead of any of us,
would be RNG flukes, or game-bugs. With competitive tactics, there
would be the possibility of the 'unwinnable situation'. In which case, our
.svg file would have to make a 6 player rotation, perhaps only to
eliminate one player. I think Maul's initial assessment of 'let the RNG
take care of the killing' still holds, as the fastest way for our players
to be eliminated. (Which will still take quite a while!) The other leagues
can content themselves with watching our progress.

p.s.
Oh yes, I almost forgot. Grey can fill HIS time... with the Rust challenge,
in hopes of becoming a Water League'er : D

I can't believe how easily you are all brainwashed by gut... Do none of you have personal ambitions burning within you? Where is your pride as a man? If you let gut have his way then he will be Champion of Water, and your individual chances of entering the League of Mana will be reduced. I understand you want well for your league, but you must think of yourselves as well.

You have a good character going, and you've proven to all the other leagues that your girl (?) has done best. But you are still going into the depths of infinity, and the RNG will claim you one by one. You know gut is a better player than you all - he is the least likely to be killed by an unlucky encounter because he knows every little trick to use. If you seriously want to compete, if you seriously hope to get into the final, then your only chance is to play dirty and try to catch others out with your own tricks.

'Trust' pretty much doesn't come into it anyway. Because of the rules on total disclosure, you simply have to be adaptable. They can't put you in a situation that's unescapable (unless they're so insecure they create a luck-based scenario where they have equal chance of failing) without dooming themselves. As long as you're versatile, I imagine it'll still be the RNG rather than any competitors that do you in. And we all seem to have done okay in our first rounds - I doubt anyone's going to go 'Oh no, the previous guy got rid of all my weapons, what will I do?', entirely forgetting that we can cast spells.

The best of luck to my fellow Water Leaguers, whether here or in the League of Mana.

A very important line to consider in every detail.

My only regret is that you highlighted my blunder of 'unescapable' over 'inescapable' - considering my lone exam was in order to obtain a degree in English, I guess I've got something to worry about :P

Good luck in your remaining ones. If Flameus doesn't turn up, I won't be able to get anything done till tomorrow afternoon at the earliest - and if he turns up before then, personally, I'd be... easily convinced that his circumstances were 'special' (even if, say, he just wanted a nap ;)) but that's just me, of course, and I imagine that situation would require a communal decision. I'd regret seeing anyone eliminated in such a fashion, though.

Also, I'd like to make a proposal to my fellows - I'm going to suggest (barring an impending risk of death, obviously) that we save our remaining casts of Baptism of Fire for Malaki (that's how you spell it, isn't it?). Whether we win or lose ultimately, I think gaining the sceptre is a good challenge for the group. If such a task lies within the reach of human thew and will, then we will accomplish it.

Grey

I already sent Flammeus a private message yesterday saying he had 24 hours. Going by his previous posts about working in an office I presume he doesn't have exams to worry about. And he's been on this forum at least twice since FantomFang completed his turn without making any notes here. The rule is 72 hours, stretched to a week upon special request. I can see no reason to make an exception in these circumstances. If he doesn't post here before Covenant takes his turn then unfortunately you'll have to continue without him.

With regards to Malakai, I should maybe remind you that he can be easily defeated in darkness.

It is good to see, that simply reading through the noble Water League
threads, has somewhat reformed you. Giving advice to help former
rivals, is a sure sign that the Water League has been a positive
influence upon you. Perhaps you will renounce your former (wretched!)
Fire League'ing ways, and come over to the side of light and justice.

> I already sent Flammeus a private message

I also had checked his last date of activity, and it was very recent.
The only reason I can see, why he hasn't played, is lack of interest.
Let's remember that the other leagues (and spectators) are waiting
on the Water League. Sure, we have a right to take as long as we need,
but we should try to be courteous as well. If anyone does lose interest
in playing, just say so. Of course, if there is a special circumstance,
that's different.

Actually, I was purely concerned that you would hide such vital information from other members of your league to give yourself an edge. You would not understand the human concept of pity, that makes me worry for these poor souls that have to share a competition with you.

I also had checked his last date of activity, and it was very recent.

Yup. He even posted in this thread commenting on FantomFang's turn. I can only presume he doesn't realise it's his round... in which case, there's nothing I can do other than remind him. Everyone knows about the time limit, and it clearly states his position in both the first page of the Water League thread and the first page of the Discussion thread. If he loses his turn because he's simply not paying attention... well, that's no one's fault but his own. If there were any other reason then he's had ample opportunity to tell us.

His 3 days are now up. If he gets here before Covenant posts then he is welcome to play, but otherwise Covenant takes over and he is disqualified.

I must say gut, it does remind me of a certain expression. Something about rats and a sinking ship... :P Will you be the captain that goes under with his ship, or will you be the coward that steals the last lifeboat and leaves his comrades to drown? I think we'll soon see... ;)

22000 -> My turn starts i whack a couple of monsters and then pray to recover pp/hp.

22073 -> I'm going deeper, yeouch1 i find the stairs down... and am tempted to use them as two blue dragons attack me.

22142 -> after bolting a couple of blue dragons I find an adamantium spear which i decide to equip

22205 -> some item destruction ensues from a dragons bolt, but i raise to lvl 19. archery +4 for skills. dex +1

22358 -> I run back a bit after the dragons bolt be even though i'm invisible (one of our veil of gods books get destroyed) one of the dragons drops us a farsight spellbook

22763 -> after killing some dragons and reading a the farsight book to it's end I am a bit afraid of more dragons. A lightning vortex ambushes me as i'm taking a look at the rest of the level. no more item destruction thankfully. By exploding he convinces a lizard man to drop an adamantium tower shield +11/+2. not too bad I think and equip it.

22959 -> this level is boring I descend and use a hundred turns or so praying near the stairs up on i37

23280 -> gah a mimic hivemind. darkness takes care of it.

23458 -> greater mmmy dies to bless

23400 (or so) -> I open a door to find a chaos wizard that has summoned lots of greater chaos servants, writhing masses and some chaos servants. I decide to make a run for it. I bolt a few servants and a couple of masses while doing that

23754 -> I desced to level 38. and decide to spend rest of the time healing from my wounds.

23780 -> a troll king killed

24000 I end my game. *whew* that was close.

I think post-mortem stuff was supposed to be left out. Apart from that, well played!

')' saves a verbose log, eliminating the need to quit or force a postmortem dump (which reveals stuff like item identifications and intrinsics).

Grey's probably going to ask you to erase the intrinsics and IDs and all that.

Yeah, no problem letting him stay, since Covenant hadn't played his turns yet, imo. Not to mention Gray's post near the top specifically insinuates that he's staying =p

Flammeus, please re-read the rules - no flgs. When making a report you're meant to crate a log file using '(' or ')'. Quitting and making an flg gives access to all sorts of information you're not meant to.

You're not disqualified, and you don't have to change your post (since some have seen it already - only fair that all have the same info), but you have to be more aware of the rules in future.

DeSt

Some information already cleared(identified items, for example). He already has more information than others.

Dooh, sorry about that guys. I'll try to get my act together to the next round. Anyways, I only quit after I had already created the savefile. Not that it matters I suppose.

Don't really think that that snippet includes much spoily stuff either. But yeah, sorry about that. I hadn't really put enough thought on how you guys provided the info you did *blush* Please note however that I didn't identify my stuff when quitting. and even after that I didn't include the full list in my post before so I don't really see what information I would have gained that anyone here is lacking. Well besides for the obvious fact that I did play for 2000 turns more that the rest of you did.

However the rule about not posting .flg's is quite clear it seems (had not read it to be totally honest). So if people in our league would like me to quit, then I most certainly will :)

Yay!

> to find a chaos wizard that has summoned lots

In this scenario, it probably would have been a good, idea to
milk the wizard to generate chaos warriors. They are extremly
likely to drop eternium gear. The wizards mainly summon monsters
that can't see in the dark, the exception being WMoPC's. They
shouldn't pose a big danger to us now. If we get the opportunity
again, lets exploit it.

FantomFang
06-03-2008, 07:25 PM
I have noticed that on D50. Do they seem to drop eternium gear more often when they have higher experience? Like, would a LVL1 Chaos Warrior have a smaller chance to drop some than a LVL20?

Grey
06-03-2008, 08:26 PM
Chaos Warriors don't drop eternium eq. Chaos knights do as all know, and so do chaos warlords and chaos mutants, which are the ones that drop the eq on D50. These are not summoned by chaos wizards, otherwise the Mana Temple would be a much nicer place for equipment drops...

gut
06-03-2008, 09:07 PM
As usual, the Fire League propaganda master Grey,
comes to the noble Water League thread, spreading
horrible lies. Chaos Warriors *do* drop eternium
gear. Helmets, long swords, plate mail, boots,
medium shields and thick gauntlets to be precise.

A chaos wizard is worth an early game wish for
this reason, as it is much more productive than
just 'eternium plate mails'. You profit MANY points
of PV, loads of exp. points, *and* a great chance
at an ego weapon. AoLS is still better though, most
of the time.

The chaos warriors will always drop loads of eternium
gear, regardless of exp. or danger level. A chaos
wizard can easily be summoned in the wilderness, and
the warriors still give hordes.

Grey
06-03-2008, 09:50 PM
I'm getting myself mixed up with chaos servants, aren't I? But hrm, I don't think I've ever seen a chaos wizard summon chaos warriors. Especially not in the Mana Temple, where some eternium drops would be quite welcome. But I shall take your word for it... at least for now. Still, I guess the rest of you should beware that gut could just be spilling lies and treachery to make you get horribly slaughtered by the next chaos wizard and his summons.

Flammeus
06-04-2008, 06:21 AM
Perhaps I could have milked the wizard for some chaos warriors. It's just that the Writhing masses and greater chaos servants were proving to be quite deadly and our bolt arsenal is starting to look pretty bad. I didn't want to diminish it even further.

What comes to the use of darkness... Well I should have used it more I am sure.

Still have a lot to learn it seems.

gut
06-04-2008, 07:41 AM
If we were having trouble taking out the WMoPC's, then it's
probably a good idea to leave them alone. They do see in
the dark, and are capable of 'slowing', so it's better to be
safe than sorry. Most important thing, is to continue our
streak of not dying!

> not in the Mana Temple, where some eternium drops would be

I had never really notic- um, what I mean is...
I suppose that goes to show, even a blind squirrel finds a nut
every once in a while. The wizards do rarely (if ever?) summon
'warriors' in the Mana Temple. Perhaps it's like the skeletal
king in the TotHK's, he won't summon skeletal 'warriors', unless
you lead him off the level.

Leading a wizard out of the Mana Temple *could* be worth
exploiting! It would cause the 'servants' to be more powerful on
D:50, but since they don't see in the dark, that doesn't really
matter. I will keep that in mind for my next game, thanks... sucker.

This current example of Fire League ineptitude, pronounces a
concern I have had for a while now. Do I really *want* to be
refered to as a 'Mana' League'er? Goodness no! One is lead to
believe that it is an exclusive, highly desirable title, but look at
the roster so far, it contains TWO former Fire League'ers!

If the standards of that group are so low, I say no! I will not
endure such a disgraceful title, attatched to *my* own handle.
Should I win in the glorious Water League, I wish ONLY to be
refered to as "the Water League co-champ" not "a Mana League
contestant".

Should I win the whole contest (as I see it, I have a 50% chance,
as the only competition shall be the other Water League'er), I
will then wish to be refered to as "the Water League grand champion".

Grey
06-04-2008, 08:46 AM
Don't worry gut, there's really no chance of that happening.

As for the chaos wizards, what about the one on D48? He'd be easier to exploit than the bloody Mana Temple ones... I guess I've never noticed their summons so much outside of hte Mana Temple because I usually make sure to not disturb them until I'm able to kill them quickly.

> the one on D48? He'd be easier to exploit than the bloody Mana Temple
> ones... I guess I've never noticed their summons

Unfortunately, I also have never paid attention to their summoning
tendancies there. By that time, I am usually well equipped. If they
do indeed summon warriors, it might be possible to exploit them.
D:48 is available shortly after the casino, if one doesn't mind a
bit of back-tracking. The casino should provide better shields,
but the warriors should drop superior boots, helmets, (girdles?),
and ego weapons/armor.

The Arena Grandmaster mutters in disgust. "These worthless cretins won't even die properly. It's time to spice things up." He stands up from his throne and cries, "OPEN THE GATE!"

*THUMB* In the deepest fathoms of the earth, beyond all life and civilisation, a greater moloch marches slowly towards a huge steel lever. *THUMB* With one hand the greater moloch grabs the lever and pulls on it with all its strength. But the lever snaps. The hulking demon growls in anger and turns towards the locked gate. *THUMB* With both massive hands the greater moloch grabs the gate and pulls with all its might, rending it to shreds and tearing the entrance open. It tosses the broken metal gate aside and grunts in satisfaction as the whole level is flooded with vast chaotic energies.

Dark, murky thoughts pour through your mind, and you think deeply on how you might use every dirty tactic to put yourself ahead of others. A wave of ideas flushes across your brain, and you try your best not to drool as the temptations overcome you.

The Arena Grandmaster calls out, "League of Water! The Chaos Gate is now open! All competitive tactics are now allowed! Tear each other to pieces for our amusement!"

Alright. I don't have much time so I'll just recap quickly.

Went through the corridor below. Went on. Bumped into a ratling duelist tension room. Tried meleeing one in dark: didn't hit back. Okay, let's take on the whole load. It turned out they do see in dark. Drat. The bastards punched a hole in the armor. After obliterating them (lots of nether bolt/hellish flames castings used) I used a blessed scroll of identify to see what I have. About the gauntlets, I updated it to one that gives 4 PV and 1 missile to-hit.
Descended after seeing 10 duelists or so packed in the corner - they fled from me. Walked into water trap. Drat, LOTS of books drenched (Invis, Dark, Cure critical, Remove Curse springs to mind) and a few scrolls too. Descended again (I think). A diamond golem got me from behind. Arrows of slaying do "slight" damage, normal ones don't harm. First I fled into a room with an animated armor, then into one with a hydra. Finally, I discovered that even though the diamond golem can see in the dark, he is a bit slow in the dark so I finally managed to shake him off and run to the down stairs. Still, the bastard damaged the armor again. Had to pray twice as well: holy symbol now says "uncomfortable". Tried praying with the symbol for 1000 turns, nothing changed - did I do it wrong? Sorry, I'm new at this. Nothing interesting for the rest of the turn. Okay, let's write it down quickly: killed a few wolves and werewolf, few wolves still remaining. And... uh, what happened then? Oh, yes. I read our scroll of amnesia to obliterate any traces of my playing. Hey, it's only fair, no?

EDIT: ALSO!!! (Edited again: I43 then. I lost count.) You have 6 scars. A ghost tension room got us to middle-aged. Failed to observe what stats were changed. Better than Granny Gaia, no?

DeSt
06-05-2008, 11:13 PM
I43 actually. Or i'm just blind.

I'm going to descend as much as possible.

Many lucky levels... Too bad for upcoming players :)
Shortly:
Troll(no corpse), doppelganger king, 20lvl, acid vortex(4500+ xp), ghost tension room(we're now old), i started to evade with everything i could, air grues room, moloch room, shadow wyrm room.

I59. Hehe. Unbelievable even for me...

06-06-2008, 12:42 AM
Damn, we're diving now! Hopefully we can take on I66!

gut
06-06-2008, 12:34 PM
I notice that our St stat 15, boosted to 17 with the sword. We
are at 'strained' status, which will not train it at this point.
I don't want to run around as 'strained!' at this danger level,
so I drop our junk, and we are now just 'burdened'.

Our 'hellish flames' castings are at 18.
Our 'nether bolt' castings are at 54.
No baptism of fire.

I bless, invis, and farsight myself, and head left. I find the
stairs, and leave I59. On I60, the stairs are right next to each
other. On I61, I kill in darkness an animated armor, berserker
emperor and nearly a giant rust monster. I had some trouble with
a black wizard, but he didn't summon anything too bad.

I62 had another hellish flames book, and I read 'til gone. Very
close stairs, and I descend. I63 I encountered no monster that
saw invis, so went very quickly. I64 took some seaching to find
the stairs, but again, no heavy fighting. I65 had a blue dragon
that I killed in darkness, it left an adamantium ring, which
turns out to be damage. Again, hardly any fighting, and I quickly
find the stairs.

Infinity. I zap a wand of monster detection, to find MaLaKai.
There is a tension room of ancient minotaurs on the level, and
I am thankful for that, it should eliminate interference. I try
to explore a bit of the level before engaging MaLaKai, so I will
have some of the escape routes plotted.

I seek him out and... this is going to be ridiculously easy! He's
standing right next to an altar! It's in a corner, and N to boot,
but it's an instakill in my eyes : ) I lure him away in darkness,
all the way to the other side of the level. I was very scared about
going through the doorways, as he would be able to hit me as he
passed through them. I took my chances though, as he wasn't that
much faster than I, so he shouldn't have a high probablility of
getting in a doorway hit.

I now eat a displacer beast corpse, as that is my only means of
teleport. We get a lucky break (agian!) and I wind up right next
to the altar room. I cast a few spells while dizzy, and then use
our pick axe to dig out the wall, next to the alter. I convert us
to NL, lure MaLaKai back, and sac him. We have the Sceptre, and
our new diety seems to be 'very pleased' with our sac.

I start to leave the level, but decide to backtrack. I have
descended quite enough already, and the next player might want
to sac the minotaurs for piety. Who knows, maybe get a precrown.
Well, that's not likely, but some piety wouldn't hurt. I drop
the Sceptre by the altar to limit corruption, I thought about
saccing it, but I know that doing that would give an enormous L
boost. I leave it up to the next player. I finish my turn by
using the holy symbol ~200 times.

An altar on I:66? A real stroke of good fortune!

Grey

Wow! Congratulations guys, you've completed quite a phenomenal feat so far. Well done on managing to dive 16 levels in 2000 turns DeSt, that really is quite impressive. And good job on taking down MaLaKaI, gut - handy that you used the monster detection, since those ancient minotaurs could have given some serious trouble if you locked horns with them. As it is I'd say gaining piety from them isn't too good an idea, since the level is so corrupting overall. Precrown wouldn't be a likely possibility in such a short time either (in fact, since it's a neutral altar it'd have to be a crowning), though if going for that I'd say saccing the Sceptre is worth it.

Details of the Sceptre of Chaos for those interested:

So good damage, but heavy as hell, rapes your DV, and curses and dooms the player. Very nice...

Of course quite a legitimate tactic would be to throw away every other weapon at the end of your turn ;)

I do love how all the rhetoric of working together etc quickly disappeared after the gate was opened :) Note how gut left the char on Berserk at the end of his turn? Whilst supposedly resting? Starting to play the file! Will update as I go...

Had to edit out all of the information I posted. Sadly, I died.
Basically what happened: Descended to I68, and was right next to a Moloch. Had to run from him, right into a Diamond Golem. Ran from the both, Got trapped between the golem and ANOTHER Moloch. Teleported away with Displacer beast corpse, likely the same turn i would've died. Regain my wits, and am forced to run again by the Moloch...Right into a freaking Minotaur Mazelord (who apparently sees in the dark, and see invisible, yuck). More running, I'm eventually trapped, and then I am killed. Turns out the down stairs were past a room i had explored during the mad run early on, but they were behind a secret door. It sucked, prayers were useless (can't get out of the situation) and there were no loops for me to lose my pursuers and not get trapped.

I will say this though. This shithole was generated right after applying the river rule =). If i had just stuck it out there, and I don't see why I couldn't have (In fact, at this point I don't know why i did that, I should've just crossed it considering i was more than capable of doing it, would've required one space swim and a two space swim). So, in conclusion, don't be afraid to cross the Damn river! Heh.

That sucks! The RNG gave four monsters that see invis, and in the dark,
all on one level! It really sucks because technically, all you had to do
was just climb down the SIL stairs, and chill for a while : ) Well, that
was at least a heroic death, who wants to just descend and 'w5' for
a while? That bloody death is one that does the Water League proud!

...and then there were four.

As a consolation, accept the fact that a minotaur mazelord could have been generated on the river level too.

Bad luck, FantomFang. This is the sort of bad luck that will claim many of you now though - the sort of impossible situation you may end up trapped in, with no hope of survival in spite of every clever trick available (remembering to eat the displacer beast corpse was a good call, though ultimately futile). To answer reich's question, new monster types won't appear but the monsters encountered will be much stronger the deeper you go. An especial worry is threat rooms, that are frequently full of very dangerous monsters that can kill you almost instantly upon opening the door. Will be fun to see what high-powered enemies take down the remaining competitors.

Red dragons see in the dark, and ancients see invis too - he really was screwed. Bad luck there Flammeus. Now into round 4 of the Water League, and down to the last 3 competitors. Well, I go out of the room without sacrificing the sceptre and eat a claw bug corpse. Oh, I killed the bug before. Down to I68, I see a ghost lord. Hitzored 2x by Cure Critical Wounds, it flees. Not aged. The next room is a ghost tension room which does age us 9 years. Nothing changes though, still 'old'. Down to I70, a white unicorn appears. Sees invisible and dark, bad, very bad. Almost kills us. As a last resort, I try using a potion of confusion. It works! Staggers, then teles away. As I'm near the stairs, I descend. I71. Again, cast Farsight, Invis. I see a lot of 'taint in the vicinity'. 3-4 WMoPCs in the next room. I kill one with Hellish flames. Here's the part I don't understand: there are 4 spaces to the end of the corridor, I wait one turn, a WMoPC is immediately next to me. Wtf? Maybe I depressed '5' for too long. Anyway, he slows me, and corrupts me with 'very light'. I'm now overburdened. There is no escape now, he shrugs off a bolt and then proceeds to own me. Trying a prayer, no success. I'm now a soldier of ChAoS. Fear me.

Kenny, the hurthling priest, was killed by a writhing mass of primal chaos.

This is turning out quite fun now :D Let's hope the slaughter continues... I'm guessing the WMoPC was way faster than you, Maul, which is why it moved several spaces in your single turn.

Nezur
06-08-2008, 09:16 PM
WMoPC's' speed is often below 100. Hence they can be killed with a low level character that is not melee-oriented.

Ars
06-08-2008, 09:30 PM
Maybe the writhing mass came so close due to a teleportation trap? There's a message for that but maybe you missed it.

Nezur
06-08-2008, 10:32 PM
It may also be a bug in the monster spawning code which caused it to be created right next to Maul instead of the area that is out of sight. In my current game a monster was generated just beyond my PC's line of sight. I had casted a bolt in its direction so I began to wonder why I hadn't heard the "ZZZZT" noise.

I think the 'lucky' and 'fate smiles' intrinsics are helping : )

Quickly find stairs to I78, but do not use them yet.
There is a tension room, and I'm hoping for stone
giants : ) It's mixed, but there is a st giant in
there, I use our bolt spells to decimate the room.
We do get a giant corpse, and +1 St from it : )

On I78 I take out a cyclopse, first one of those
we've killed so far. We have 'become very light
with St -6, Dx +4, To -6, Ap -6. Got exp. level 21.
Chose 'treasure hunter' for the talent, just for
kicks. Had to eat the displacer beast corpse, to
avoid getting slaughtered by a greater moloch and
troll king.

Descend to I79 and find another spellbook of dark.
We are 'strained!' now, with low St, so I exploit
a black wizard for corpses. I pacify the level by
locking white worms in the bottom right-hand room.
I spend the remainder of my turn, chilling in the
upper left hand room, hoping for another St increase.
I used no prayers on my turns, so there should
still be plenty.

I don't quite understand the sickness thing, unless Dest
thinks I'm too foolish to cast 'cure disease'. Oh well,
on with the game.

I drink all boosting potions, heal, and dip our two PoEH
into the last holy water. We won't be needing anymore I
hope : ) I drop what I consider to be junk, the cooking
set, some rocks, and so on.

I start looking for the down staircase, and a dark orc
hits me for 78 HP's and destroys the orc helmet [+2, +3].
Am I doomed? I cast revelation, and no I'm not doomed.
It was just bad luck, despite the presence of so much
good luck.

I descend to I89, and it's a river level. I could just
< and >, but the river is right at the top of the map, so
it might not be in the way. I try it as it is. There is
a wererat in the next room, so I exploit it for corpses.
One of the rats drops a nice helm of leadership [+2, +2].
Had some trouble with a shadow Wyrm, and it took many
hellish flames to kill him.

I finish my turn, by casting some stun rays against a
wall to train it. It could be helpful against minotaurs.
We now have the 'unholy aura' corruption.
