Hi,

I played nethack ages ago and felt like trying something like this again after Oblivion.

I was browsing the manual and I simply couldn't find any class descriptions that went beyond "starts with str:xx ...." and such.
What's a mindcrafter and what can he do ?

Whats the difference between classes anyway apart from stats and some skills like "literacy" or "food preparation" ?

I'd be glad if someone brought me up to date.

cheers,
DF

Good old Andy Williams Guidebook

http://www.andywlms.com/adom/

Details on most things you need to know.

A Mindcrafter is a dude (or dudette) that uses the mind to overcome his enemies rather than magic. So things like telekinesis, turning peoples brains to mush etc. Pretty fun stuff.

Differences between classes? A world of difference. Naturally a wizard is a lot different to a fighter, who in turn is a lot different to say, a thief. Different classes come with different skills, although most skills can be learnt or obtained in game.

you have several options here.

first just load up the manual (m) from the first screen, then you can choose (c), (e), (f), (k), or whatever options you would want

or just look online for the adom guidebook.

Well, firstly, I don't know which manual you're looking at but the in-game manual (accessible from the start screen or by pressing '? m' during play) has a Races and Classes section that gives an individual description of each class and their individual powers. Mindcraft has it's own section in the manual, as does Magic/Spells (which all classes can potentially make use of, but the likes of Wizards and Priests will especially excel at).

Andy's Guidebook linked above gives general information applicable to all classes, and some specific stats for each class. You can find individual guides for some of the classes (Druid, Assassin, Wizard, Barbarian and Archer) on Silfir's adomguides site (http://adomguides.blogspot.com/). There's also an partly complete Monk guide by Molach here (http://adom.brinkster.net/forum/messages.asp?thread=5606&start=53050&page=1), and a mostly complete Bard guide by myself here (http://adom.brinkster.net/forum/messages.asp?thread=5990&start=57841&page=1&tmp=58119).

yeah, i was looking at the guidebook when i couldn't find the important stuff.
it should have the ingame manual information inside ... they are rather more elaborate.
thanks for the info and the links.

so, i gather we have no wiki for adom around ?

No, we do not have a dysfunctional lexicon-effect page where everyone can toss random crap.:D

Nah, the guidebook and the Blogspot site is enough. As for your guidebook comment - the manual offers information for a newbie. The Guidebook offers information to those who are frustrated because they can't progress - not that it helps since I almost know the GB by heart and yet an average character gets to level 20-ish give or take before dying.

i can't imagine how a wiki could be dysfunctional and containing crap if only people write in it that care about it .. but then I know people that still think a mouse is useless for a proper OS. :)

Nah, a successful wiki is the best proof of a functional community.

TB has stated there will be a Wiki hosted on this site some time. I don't think it's too important though - we have the Guidebook and Silfir's class guide site, and the manual is actually pretty decent (compared with, say, Dwarf Fortress).

Yeah, the thing with the guidebook and the ingame manual is, that the info is sometimes pretty much distributed among different places.

anyway, it's a wiki and if it was planned anyway then I just saved you the work.

http://adom.wikia.com/wiki/Archer
That's the archer entry transfered from the guidebook. You'll notice the linked skills (currently just climbing).
Sure, you don't need it since you're a pro, but this structure helps everyone else.

There are already 2 ADOM wikis in existance:

http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Ancient_Domains_of_Mystery/Places
http://adom.wikidot.com/

Also I should warn you that Andy's guidebook is copyrighted - you shouldn't copy stuff over without permission. For an ADOM wiki to be properly constructed all information should be referenced to RGRA posts with thoroughly tested results.
