Overconfidence

A very nice char, looking like a winner. Lvl 19 candleborn troll healer (d'oh!), precrowned and crowned neutral (crown of leadership/staff of the wanderer) with some nice equipment like 7LBs, red/blue/white dragon scale mails, 1 RoDS, the bug temple stuff and a nice set of missiles (had been training both bows and crossbows). Corruption was no problem, still day 65, 8 SoCRs and 3 PoCC available. Had done all that I needed outside CoC (TotHK, ToeF, bug temple) and was heading for the deeper levels, lvl32 when I died. Pretty much meleed everything till that moment since I had no luck with books and barely had any spell. So I met a stone ooze and decided to melee it (I could have killed it with missiles easily, but as the title says, it was just overconfidence):

Overconfidence.. just lost a lvl 14 wizard in D:8 or so (one below big room). Mixed tension room? No problem, he had quite fine assortment of spells and his melee skills were nice too. Then...


You focus your magical energies to release the spell.
Which direction [89632147, Z = ABORT]?
The gorgon is hit by the icy bolt!
The thug is hit by the icy bolt!
The thug is killed!
You become more efficient in using the 'Frost Bolt' spell (now +12).
The gorgon breathes petrification gas at you!
You petrify!
You die...

Imagine my thoughts when i saw amulet of petrification resistance in inventory (not equipped of course ;))

Nothing that can be done to prevent that, if you were already on Coward.

Except training shields more - at high DV (over 60) the petrification doesn't work, or at least because very unlikely to affect you.

Nothing he could have done IN THAT MOMENT instead of switching to Coward. Which he wasn't on, apparently, which is why there is an S in YASD.
