The message occured right after killing some hill orcs in the wilderness - really out of nowhere. Any ideas?

Killing nonlawful monsters while lawful is sometimes considered a lawful act - very minor.

Are you sure? I know killing chaotic monsters was lawful in earlier versions but was changed to not affect alignment because it was difficult to stay neutral or chaotic.

Perhaps one hill orc panicked and you didn't kill it so maybe that was the lawful act.

Nope. I've killed monsters while lawful and gotten that message, but only if lawful. It's probably been changed for neutrals and chaotics, with the reasoning that if you kill chaotic monsters while neutral, you do it for neutral reasons and thus it isn't considered lawful.

I generally trust my memory in this, because I've only ever played 1.1.1 seriously.

Okay, I see, but anyhow... I did not kill anything the turn before. I walked on some square and something quite unimportant was lying there. Afterwards the message came.

Could be one of the ones you were fighting was bleeding and died out of your range of sight.

letting wounded enemies run away from the battle is also considered a minorly lawful act

Well that must be it. I did not really care where the guys went...
