No, not games, programs. Please share some of your
favorite non-game applications, especially the free ones.
We'll bump the spam away yet... maybe.

My new favorite text editor is notetab light. It's free,
powerful and wonderful. I previously liked notepad++,
and still like it for some things, but I think notetab
light edges it out by a fair margin. It comes with such
handy HTML features, I'm actually thinking of trying to
make a web page myself. Here's a link:

Well. In image editing I'm a fan of Fireworks (Now Adobe Fireworks). Always have been, maybe just because it was easier to learn than PS and now i can't seem to switch =P

Free AV: Avira has two thumbs up.

Dropbox: http://www.getdropbox.com Nice little FTP tool if you share a lot of files with people you know.

Player: KMPlayer takes the prize. Highly customizeable and a very powerful tool if you know what you are doing. Never again leave something unwatched because of codec issues. (too lazy to link it)

Combined Community Codec Pack. All the codecs you could think of plus a decent enough player with a single install.

Also, Celestia fucking rocks.

Gut, I share your love of notepad++. Thanks for the tip on notetab, I never heard of that one before and will give it a try.

What kind of software is Celestia?

I went to sourceforge to check out Celestia, it seems
to be some sort of space simulator. I was never that
into space stuff, but thought about DL'ing it anyway.
Turns out it's ~35 MB though : (

Favourite programs... Linux comes to mind. Oh, you meant userspace programs?

Here's some of the stuff I have been using today: Vim, Python, Git, Bash, awesome3, Firefox, Thunderbird, Amarok, VLC...

Games? Spring (http://springrts.com/) is really awesome (nearly as good as ADOM). One of the few games that are way above the average commercial game (and yes, in terms of gameplay *and* graphics).

Epythic, have you ever heard of the curious phenomenon called "dial-up"?

(At least I'm guessing gut isn't retarded enough to confuse MB with GB, which might be a bit of a stretch admittedly)

The joys of a 20mb/sec connection. But yeah...I think Gut would know the difference.

Yeah, I started with one of those too. But they are so prehistoric...

Ya guessed wrong.

He just got it right by luck.

The joys of a 20mb/sec connection.
MB (Megabyte), not Mb (Megabit) and certainly not mb (millibit).

In both directions, I should add.

Yay for access to the university internet connection from home. :)

Mushclient (for my less potent mudding addiction)
The Gimp for image editing. It's a nice program over all. And it's free. Since I can't afford photoshop or the like, that is a big check on the win side.

That's about all I use these days, especially since I'm borrowing my housemates laptop. My desktop decided to switch occupations, and is now a paper weight.

Prehistoric or not, my not very extensive knowledge of the USA does suggest that there might be a couple spots or two in the state of Kentucky that do not have access to broadband internet ;)

> Is there anything better than Firefox with the ability to block ads?

Yes. I have not had a single pop-up in about 12 years now.
I browse with javascript and active scripting turned off, and
that does the trick nicely. I also browse with images and
(almost) everything else turned off as well. It's a habit I got
into from browsing Fravia's old searchlores site, and it's one
of the better ones I've ever picked up.

> pots or two in the state of Kentucky that do not have access to broadband

I have access to it, I just don't want it. Same thing with
cable and satelite television. 50 bucks per month and all
I was watching were a few MMA fights per month. If I want
to DL a large file, which is rare, I just set it to DL while
I'm gone. If I don't need or want something, why buy it?

> I'm guessing gut isn't retarded enough to confuse MB with GB,

You didn't know that Celestia was a ~35 MB DL?

> Yeah, I started with one of those too. But they are so prehistoric...

Honestly, the only reason I can think of to buy a faster
connection would be for movies. The thing is, I'm not a
movie guy. Not in the slightest. Can you think of any
other reasons to buy more bandwidth?

Because MORE is BETAAAAAAAHHH! =P

Kidding...

But i dunno. I'm also the type of guy that leaves his downloads overnight w/o problem (my connection is 2 Mbits/sec), but overall nagivation is a lot more pleasant with a faster connection. Thou i never complained when i used dial up, but after i got broadband it seems impossible to go back. Perhabs you are a stronger person than I am in that matter, because i doubt you never used broadband in your life, and you still choose to use dial up.

I guess the main thing for broadband imo is the telephone line. Having two lines just for that seems like a waste. Ans using just the one has obvious disadvantages. Also, broadband isn't that expensive nowadays (basic packages at least aren't) and... how much do you spend on telephone bills using dial up? Or perhabs you have a fixed plan or something and then it gets cheaper in the end...

I have only one line, and experience no problems. If I miss
telemarketers calling me, all the better.

> Also, broadband isn't that expensive nowadays

Not really, but that would be in addition to a phone line.
The thing that bothers me about the broadband deals, and
so many other things that I've looked into, is the service
agreement that comes with it. It's really not the money,
but the TERMS to which I am compelled to consent. I'm the
kind of guy that reads fine print, and that ruins a *LOT*
of stuff for me. Satelite TV, broadband, credit cards (debit
is fine), cell phones, a zillion apps that came ~kinda~
installed on my PC (such as MS Works). These are all things
that I sooo happily live without. Many of the people that I
know (in real life) that agree to these things often come to
regret consenting to these deals.

I'm not anarchist or anti-establishment or anything, I just
like to know what I'm agreeing to before I sign a deal.

> how much do you spend on telephone bills using dial up?

$25 phone (ATT) + $8.95 dial up.

> perhabs you have a fixed plan

Those are abominations in my eyes. I view them in the same
light that I view a used car dealer sellin- I mean, *financing*
the 3-year extended warranty to an unwitting car buyer.

Definitely agree on Gimp. It's almost as good as photoshop (and better in some areas I think) and it's completely free.

I use it for basically any digital drawning / pic editing that I do.

BSplayer and VLC (for music and videos, respectively)
uTorrent (for getting music and videos)
Mozilla Firefox (for making posts on forums)
putty (for connecting to my buddy's server which he then changes my password and makes me beg for it back)
Kismet, Airodump, Aireplay, Aircrack (for getting wireless out of saggy WEP encrypted nodes)
Eclipse (for pretending I actually do coding)
Notepad++ (for really doing coding on windows when I don't want the bloat of Eclipse)
vi (for really doing coding on linux, because I'm damn cool like that)

That's all I can think of since I actually use them. There's probably a couple other programs I don't touch too often but should have probably mentioned.

ProcessMonitor - To trace down what is doing what. Systinternals.com

CDCheck 3.1.14.0 - For getting data off of damaged CD's.

Shift + delete.

But I think eraser doesn't just remove a file but it also overwrites it several times so the file can't be restored with any means.

Shift delete won't save you from thumb drive viruses living it up in your recycler directory. If other peoples drives must enter your machine, better disable autorun entirely (do not believe windows when it says its disbaled) and the recycle bin.

/You should disable autorun anyway, why the hell would I want an extra window popping up asking me do I want to view some photos, when I can access all the bloody files from explorer. Piss off microsoft.

I have had irritating experiences in the past with stupid Recycle bin.
It's been so long ago now (like a decade) that I can't even remember
what my original gripe was with it, but what vogonpoet says about
not believing it when it claims to be dis, um, 'baled' seems to jog a
memory or two. Suffice to say that I'm hooked on eraser and wouldn't
have it any other way.

I do like this proggy. It comes with a bit of a learning curve, due to all
the options, but it is worth it. It allows you to rename a huge list of files
that have spam built into the names. Will easily transform your hundreds
of files like:

Best_ways_to_slay_drunk_irishmen[episode02]DvDrip[Eng]-Stealthmaster[megauploadZOEH93M].visitmysite.con.avi

into

BW2SDI[EP02].avi

even properly numbered and all.

Wow, I'm living in Finland and I have a 1 Mbit/s 3G mobile Internet connection that costs 19 euros/month ($26.55). Most of my friends have like 10 Mbit/s ADSL connections and they think my connection is slow enough to be unusable (but it is adequate for me). I don't know of anyone using a dial-up here anymore. It's not only video, you wouldn't want to use Facebook with a dial-up for instance, so I guess you don't ;)

Anyway, Firefox, OpenOffice and GIMP are also my favourites and I use Fedora Linux distribution to run these programs as well as many others. I also use Ardour that is a free multi-track recorder comparable to ProTools (there are no limitations in the program other than speed of your processor and disks and it uses 32-bit floats for all internal calculations, supports your existing VST plugins etc.) but currently there is no Windows version. There is a Mac port available though.

OT: it seems euro symbol does not work in this forum, although it works fine in other forums I'm using.

There is one developer working on a Windows version (rest of them say they don't use Windows and don't care about a Windows version but will incorporate it if someone does the work for them), but don't hold your breath. It is a huge C++ program and programming for Windows is very different from Posix platforms like Linux and Mac OS X so there is quite some work to do.. I read a status report that claims Ardour/Windows already compiles and starts successfully, but is very very unstable and totally unusable at the moment.

My brother uses Ardour/Linux for his home studio, using only free LADSPA plugins, and he is very happy with it. I use it sometimes for mastering with Jamin (a free real-time mastering tool with 1024-band eq, 3-band compression, lookahead brickwall limiter and some other features I have never needed) although I could probably use a much lighter host program for Jamin (like Audacity) with no problem. Websites are http://ardour.org/ and http://jamin.sourceforge.net/ in case you're interested to learn more about their features.

New love of my life: Sculptris

It is pixologic's little brother to Zbrush, a great 3D sculpting
program. Unlike the bloaty (but great) Zbrush, Sculptris does
not have a learning curve at all. It focuses more on allowing
you to create 3D models more intuitively, and has a GUI that
makes a person stand up and say "That's how programs should
work! Just do what I think." It is 100% free, only weighs in at
3 megabytes, and runs quite speedily on my laptop.

I use many programs I like, including:
TeX (a typesetting program; I prefer to use the Plain TeX format, with DVI output)
METAFONT (a program for designing typefaces; in my opinion, this is one of the best)
Enhanced CWEB (a literate programming tool)
MegaZeux (a program for games; I have made some modifications to the program too)
TeXnicard (a program for making high-quality card games, with printing, statistics, and more)
ImageMagick (command-line image manipulation program; far better than Photoshop or GIMP, I think)
vi (a text editor for UNIX systems)
GNU Forth (a programming language)
