This was the most promising wizard I ever had. But he (so I) succumbed gloriously.

On the tower of eternal flames' top floor, after after clearing a big room full of black slayers, I took a new approach to enter the fire temple itself (see memorial file). Then I took my yet boldest approach to kill the whole temple (if necessary) with an efficiently placed series of ice balls, heading for the Wyrm. When it stood next to me, I unfairly blocked its eyesight, and blasted it to panic with more ice balls. This is great fun! No taking care of masses of fire monsters just standing in your way to hunt down the big chief monster. Then, the following happened:

Clothes (40s) are lying here. You resist the searing flames.
Several items are lying here. You see an ancient altar of black obsidian.
Suddenly the fire demon screams a prayer to its gods!
You are consumed by a roaring column of flames!
Something on the ground is burned to ashes! The Ancient Chaos Warm corpse on
the ground is cooked by the heat! You die...


The spell list was just awsesome, and a number of really good stat potion finds, a spellbook shop on D:1, a recipe of potions of gain attribute was doable, so really really nice to the end. FLG:

Ditto. In future I recommend invisibility in the temples (the chaos warriors can still see you, but it still helps a lot in case of such an accident).

Forget that - in future, don't bloody well stand on top of the elemental altars at all, unless you are totally sure of what you are doing and why, have cleared the temple, pacified the level with stupid breeders, surrounded the altar with locked doors, are invisible, and really really want to.

IIRC, invisibility is not very reliable. I am not sure about grues capability to see invisble, but if you use ball spells someone injured and not finished can sack you.

May be i am wrong but i have not touched wizard for years (may be i will roll one in random challenge game:p)

I haven't planned to stand on that altar, it was covered by the corpse of the wyrm and other things. Had I remembered that I had to remember I would have remembered and kicked those things off the altar.

Afaik the only mobs in fire temple that see invisible are the Chaos servants, the grues don't.

Ironically, only really powerful characters tend to die this way. Weaker characters would have made the ACW move off the altar by running away several times.
