After years of trying on and off, finally an Eternium win. I pretty much followed to the letter the methodology that Barry Kearns laid out in his RGRA posts when he completed this challenge for the first time. In short: Raven-born dwarf bard, rolled and rerolled until I got one with Food Preservation and Pick Pockets. Straight to the SMC, pickpocket stuff while the cave bear pet levels up, then up to level 2 and put all skill increases into Pick Pockets. Then it was just a matter of pickpocketing until I managed to steal either a wand of trap creation or a wand of digging. After about 12k turns, I got a wand of digging, which in combination with blankets (by that point I'd acquired three) let me create a water trap. 3k more turns of wandering, and I found a gremlin, which I lead across the trap to trigger the gremlin bomb.
In the screen above, the 2x2 enclosure created out of doors in the bottom left was the killing area, which the gremlins funneled into from the corridor on the right. The lone door in that corridor would be opened and closed to allow gremlins in, and four or five squares to the right of that door was the water trap (it was disabled once I reached level 50, to allow me to kill off the last gremlins and clear out the right side of the level for my victory dance :P).
As soon as the gremlin bomb got going, it was plain sailing. I would eat a blessed stomafillia, and then paste in several thousand pickpocket commands in one go, so I could leave the game pickpocketing while doing other stuff, and just check back in every now and then to eat another stomafillia and paste in more commands.
After 20k turns of pickpocketing, I would push the gremlins back toward the water trap and lock the door that lead to the killing chamber, then check the accumulated gear from stealing and drops. Generally I would have 2-3 PoGA and a handful of potions of -stat-, so pretty rapidly I became very buff. Potions of wonder and education gave me most of the skills I was missing, and a ton of miscellaneous spells which was pretty useful (Teleportation in particular would save me from failure later on).
I would typically get about 5 scrolls of defense and protection also, so although I was only getting average gear, I was able to pimp it to frankly ridiculous levels. I might have been able to squeeze a few more points of DV and PV onto some of my equipment, but it quickly reached the point where it didn't really matter, so I stopped trying to improve all my equipment evenly and instead took it upon myself to try and make ADOM's greatest ever hat. I think I succeeded:
Head : blessed hat [+11, +12] [4s]
The potions of exchange came in at around the same rate as the PoGA, about 12 per 100k turns spent pickpocketing. I wanted to make damn sure after all this effort that I got at least one stack of djinni rings, so I kept going until I had >100 PoEx. After about 800,000 turns, I had collected 105 potions of exchange and was ready to convert them to wishes.
At this point, the game threw me my first scare. I killed gremlins until I was level 9, and then, to check that I had the item danger level in the SMC right for obtaining RoDS, I spent another few thousand turns pickpocketing. Again, I did this by pasting in pickpocket commands a thousand at a time, but suddenly, halfway through the pickpocketing, I appear over on the other side of the level. Wtf? It turns out I'd gained the astral space corruption. I'd spent 300 days in the SMC already without being corrupted, so I'd just assumed the level was corruption-free, but no - I suppose there must be a minimum level requirement before the PC can gain any corruption in the SMC.
I made my way back to the killing chamber, but without the bear and I there to control the flow, the gremlins were pouring out quickly in the area where I fell back to collect herbs and stash gear. Between the bear ignoring my orders and me randomly teleporting it was extremely difficult to get back to the door and lock it, and I feared for a while that I was going to suffer an ignominious death simply by being swamped by breeders that I could not kill. Eventually, I hit upon a method of teleporting a gremlin away, taking a step toward the door, teleporting another gremlin away, another step, and so on. Laboriously I made my way back to the killing chamber door, teleported gremlins off it until it was clear, closed it, and locked it. The bear killed off all the gremlins that had made it through to the left of the level, and order was restored.
I checked my pickpocket proceeds, and there it was - a RoDS. Satisfied that the danger level was right, I dipped 19-stacks into all 105 of my PoEx, and finished up with three stacks of RoDS for a total of 58. My paranoia about collecting a huge pile of PoEx to make absolutely sure I got wishes was justified, as my longest dry run was around 65 dippings with no stack of RoDS generated. To have got about 50 PoEx together, shut off the gremlin bomb and then dipped them all and got nothing would have been pretty awful so I'm glad I went to the extra trouble.
I spent that first pickpocketed RoDS on a stethoscope to check out the bear...
This is FURIOUS B, the cave bear. It is tame. It looks extremely experienced.
FURIOUS B is not injured. [M]ore.
<<<<<--- Cave bears ( N ) --->>>>>
This bear has a thick brown fur coat. It is quiet, big, and tends to mind its
own business, unless you get it mad.
Cave bears seem to have a DV of 106. They have a PV of about 31. They seem to
have 306 hitpoints on the average. Usually they attack 3-16 times (12 on the
average). A hit causes 5-290 points of damage (53 on the average). They seem to
have an average speed of about 110.
You examine FURIOUS B. Diagnosis: Level: 135, DV: 106, PV: 31, Hits: 306,
Attacks: 16, Damage: 48-58. Speed: 110.
What a bear. Averaging 53 dmg a hit and 16 (!!) attacks a round. Interestingly, from a health perspective he still isn't that much of a tank, having only 300hp. As destructive as he is in melee, when I cleared out the last gremlins from around the water trap at level 50, they actually almost killed him (SMC-spawned gremlins when the PC is at clvl 50 are pretty nasty)!
I then wished for a pickaxe and dug out the 3x3 room at the top of the level. I went digging through the mountains of gear that had piled up and pulled out a wand of far slaying, blessed it, put on one of my AoLS (I had found 10 from pickpocketing), went into the room and wished for an ancient karmic wyrm. Zap the wand, both me and the wyrm die, and kapow, 10 levels of XP. After killing seven wyrms I had another minor scare when I wished for #8 and then realised my wand had no charges left in it - cue a frantic dash across the level to the piles of gear, searching for a scroll of charging amid all the rubbish. Thankfully, with all stats at 99 and a hefty pile of hitpoints, the wyrm couldn't really hurt me, and I was able to recharge the wand and lead it back into the 3x3 room and off it.
After killing eleven AKWs in this fashion, I reached level 50, and all that was left to do was to construct an elaborate message of triumph for any other adventurers who might later visit the small cave. FURIOUS B and I then left the SMC and the Drakalor Chain, victorious in our Eternium quest.
