Now I know just looking through here you guys find classic victories not that impressive, but I'm pretty proud about this, with it being my first time and all. I'll include my memorial file at the bottom of this post. Here's my story: I started a grey elven wizard, and decided to plow through the unremarkable dungeon as my opening. I headed to HMV, then bought some food and ran back to terinyo over the wilderness, and did the druid quest. I took power over knowledge(already had herbalism, and I didn't have surivival, so gardening didn't seem very useful). After going through that, I returned around level 10? to the UD and got precrowned and crowned, then proceeded to farm herbs for a while to get my toughness up so I could actually take hits...Anyways, I went through the typical routine with the caverns of chaos, but I got permanent invisibility before I got to the quest for the arena, so I actually didn't do the arena quest til my mid 30s after I had gotten tactics from a potion of education. Some time around the 20s I got lucky and found a room full of eternium gear, which combined with my existing artifacts to make me nigh untouchable. I went through the water temple without taking damage, and the only thing in the ToEF that could hurt me was the ancient chaos wyrm itself. I had to use a divine intervention or 3 for healing there. After that, it was smooth sailing. I took on the air and earth temples without breaking a sweat, then killed Saxxarakskesksfs or whatever it's name is without taking more than 60 damage(I was at 360 health at that point). After that it got REALLY tough though at the mana temple. I almost died several times, and had to spam interventions. After I killed the archmage I had to retreat and come back for the orb later. The final level was difficult for me as well, but I was aided because by a mixture of luck, use of the casino, and saving up, I used 6 blessed scrolls of familiar summoning on the final level, so I had a LOT of backup. After that, I went to the casino one last time, robbed it blind, sacrificed the proceeds to my god, and left the Drakalor Chain.

In case you can't tell by my story, you'll soon find from my memorial that I play EXTREMELY devout characters. I sacrifice everything I can spare to my god, and spam divine interventions with great fervor as well. I think I may be the only player in the history of ADOM who could actually consider the piety cost reduction talents as a worthwhile investment. I might go get them in the future.

edit: Forgot to mention...this is probably considered a bad run by you guys, but there's a couple things I did really badly. The worst of them, I think, would have to be that I went over 200 days during this little adventure. =/ Ah well...a victory is a victory, and I gotta start somewhere.

A pretty solid victory by the looks of things. I'm surprised you left all the corruption in place though - it takes just a quick trip to the unicorn to get it wiped off. Still, hope your proud - first always feels good :)

By the way, with this game I was very haphazard, and made a lot of mistakes and general messups, so based on what you see, feel free to give constructive criticism...I'm still learning, so I need to know what I did right and what I did wrong.

I really should've saved my trip to the unicorn glade, but I blew it early because background corruption was so high and I got the deevolution corruption, which I HATE. Of course, naturally, I got it again before the end. -_-

Congrats! Hey dont feel silly, I would love a standard victory! I've been playing roguelikes since the mid 90's ADOM was my first. of all them i played regularly, nethack, zangband, ToME, ADOM is the only one i've never had ANY kind of victory! And thats why I keep playing it. I love adom its challenging but not to the point I just give up. like crawl. Crawl is very fun, I love the skill diety and magic system in it but its just sooooo dang hard that its not even fun. adom is great. grats again!

You asked for it : )

In general, descending through the UD is reffered to as the 'darwinian
playstyle', as in 'survival of the fittest'. Only the strong or lucky will make
it though there, and the fact that you made it through there with a GE says
you are a good player. There are safer, and more rewarding ways of starting
a game, but the UD is a good way of weeding out the unlucky ones : )

When doing the druid quest, it's safer to generate him while at a low exp.
level, leave, and return at a higher exp. level. That way you will be much
more powerful than him, but with a wizard it doesn't matter so much.

Pool sipping before doing the arena quest is bad form, but if you do it right,
it's not so bad. Just kill 19 arena opponents first, and have a potion of visibility.
That way you can become visible for the one fight you need to be champ.

For myself, I normally like to disable the ACW before fighting him. A potion
of blindness/confusion or a zap of paralyze/stun is your best friend. The wand
is probably the safer method, as you can do that THROUGH other monsters
(meat shields), thus eliminating the possibility of getting zapped with an energy
bolt. Potions on the other hand must have a clear path to be used, BUT, unlike
wands, they are 100% effective : )

Again, the use of meat shields is invaluable. You don't need to enter the temple
at all. Fire a bolt inside, retreat to the corridor, and wait. When you see the
Archmage, DON'T kill the monster that's between you and him, use him as a
shield to prevent the Archmage from killing you with death bolts. Lead them
both back through the corridor to the place you tunnelled in at, get the chaos
servant to 'moderately' or (careful) 'critically' wounded, then exit the tunnel. It
should look like this:

Now, finish off the chaos servant with a ball spell or something. The Archmage
will never fire death bolts as long as he is not in a straight line with you, only
harmless frost bolts. He will also never panic and run away, as long as he has
a clear shot at you. He will always have a clear shot at you from this possition,
because he himself acts as a stopper to prevent his chaos goons from getting
involved : ) This strategy makes him an easy kill, you don't even need a source
of -deth.

That's what the darkness spell is for; it makes your life a LOT easier : )

Nope. Any victory is a good one in my book. The reason why a lot of folks
are down on GEWI victories is because of how enormously powerful they
are. I did once write a guide about wizards you might like to read. It's a bit
out of date, and I use some different strategies myself these days, but it's at
Silfir's blogspot if you're interested..
