View Full Version : Choose Your Spells Challenge

Grey
01-10-2009, 05:38 PM
This is based on the "Choose Your Spells" thread (http://www.adom.de/forums/showthread.php?t=732) Silfir started a couple of weeks ago. The premise of the challenge is simple: start a new character of your chosen race/class and use only 5 spellbooks in the entire game. You may have multiple of the same book if you desire. Your character must primarily rely on spells to survive, so no weapon skills other than shields are allowed to go above level 8. To get the 5 spellbooks of your choice at the start it's best to ADOMBot yourself a wand of wishing and directly wish for the 5 tomes. You may not use further spellbooks found or wands/potions of wonder to get more castings, nor may you use any other spells in the game. This is a challenge to test your tactical skill with a restricted spellcaster, and how well your forethought operates in choosing spells (notably no two people chose exactly the same 5 in the other thread). Of course it's mostly about having a bit of fun...

With regards to ADOMBot, a link to it can be found elsewhere (http://www.adom.de/forums/showthread.php?t=581) in the forums, but I'll not give it right here. The process for setting up your character is simple enough:
-generate char
-run ADOMBot
-choose "auto", then "cheats", then "inventory editor"
-double-click on one of the items in your pack that you don't mind losing (such as a starting spellbook)
-scroll down the "item type" list to about halfway - inbetween the chaos orbs and the dragon scale mails you'll find the WandofWishing entry
-choose it and edit the "charges" to "5", then click "Write to ADOM memory"
-in the ADOM console wish for your 5 chosen spellbooks
-drop any spare spellbooks and the empty wand in the wilderness
-get rid of ADOMBot and start the challenge

All progress updates and discussion go in this thread, but try not to post full log files. Best of luck to everyone, and we'll see how well each of our choices of 5 spells works out.

Grey, could you please create, adombot and upload the character so everyone starts with the same save, as you suggested in the previous thread? (Yes, I'm being ultra-lazy here and would rather just pick a save than download adombot and use it :P) Thanks in advance :)

gut

If given the option, I would also like to start with a shared save...
so I'll roll one and post it : )

Named him gut's roll. He started with a Le stat of 15 (blah)
and I chose potent aura, strong aura, and careful as his
starting talents. If anyone would like a non-retarded wizard,
or one with treasure hunting potential, you will have to
wait for another save : )

Ars
01-10-2009, 09:51 PM
But that would mean same race/class and spells for everyone, and wizards are for pussies. So no.

Otherwise too I am vary of the weapon skill restriction, because I'd just take mainly utility spells (teleportation, darkness, healing, and more teleportation) for a paladin and do the killing with real peoples weapons.

Grey
01-10-2009, 10:57 PM
Heh, well, I did consider the single save thing, but all of us playing the same r/c combo might have been a bit dull, so I figured it was best to let everyone do their own thing. Anyone who wants a standard wizard may wish to use gut's handily supplied save (I'm tempted to use it myself, but I'd like to use Sage). If anyone wants something different and doesn't want to make it themselves then just say here and I'll cook up a char to match.

Edit: And regarding your point about the weapon skills, Ars, to be frank the challenge is painfully simple if you choose a barbarian and never use spells. The only way to really keep the challenge more spell-centric (without demanding pure spellcasting) is to put a simple maximum on how much you can use weapons.

alright then, I dont have the bot and I prefer not to touch it, just my preference. Hook me up with a dark elf necro, 2 magic missile, 1 acid ball, 1 teleport, and 1 cure minor wounds. No treassure hunting dont need it. pick long stride and if there are any talents left use your best judgement. birthsign dosent matter either, just PLEASE dont give me unicorn or tree lol.

I have no best judgement. You got 'quick' and 'very quick'.

> birthsign dosent matter either, just PLEASE dont give me unicorn or tree lol.

I admit I was hoping your roll would be unicorn so I could
get to say that picking your sign wasn't part of the challenge.
I'm certain that the RNG picked up on this, and worked to
counter it. You got candle!

On a seperate note, you didn't specify gender. Congratulations!
It's a boy : ) No reason really, I just had that set in my
configuration file.

just for reference, how much you can kill/do not wiith spells keeping "spirit" of challenege. Playing illiterate barb is of course off, but...
Just train spear for defense bonus or if someone founds spear of devastation...
i am inclined on elvish assasin (high elf probably) just need to check there the hell line is.

And i do not mean, whacking and posioning. I will play under "wizard rules" as much as possible. [Skiping one thing of course]

Edit: gut, i know cursed wand does not open door, but doesn't it give seperate message if door is trapped?

Grey

Bad luck gut - big shame that wand of knocking didn't work.

Soirana, the line should be clear enough - no individual weapon skill to go above level 8. I really recommend you choose a class with Concentration though :P And you'll want decent Mana to get the book-casting talents I'm sure.

meh
01-11-2009, 04:26 PM
I suck at playing casters, so I decided to roll a GE monk. The plan is to play as a regular fighter at first and only read the books later.

Starsign is unicorn. I was going to pick the PV talents, but I don't have enough toughness for Hardy. Promising start this...

I started in the first level of the puppy cave, where there was a tension room of rats. One of them made me sick, so I went back to the spellbooks and decided to read cure critical wounds. The book exploded on the first attempt and took me down to 1 HP. I prayed twice, but didn't have enough piety to remove the sickness. I waited in the wilderness instead. There was no final attack, so I survived the sickness. I went to the ID next, where I was killed by a gang of blink dogs.

I reached level 6 and got 3984 points. And I never even learned any spells.

I noticed that there is one significant flaw in the rules for this challenge. If you attack someone on coward, then you won't gain any weapon marks, so it's possible to use melee far more than should be allowed.

True enough, but I'll assume people won't abuse that. The game is about fun after all, and slowly whittling down every enemy on Coward is hardly a great way to play.

Died aswell. Picked gut's wizard save, wished for frost bolt, magic missile, acid ball, teleportation and cure critical wounds spellbooks, as I said in the other thread. Decided to read every book once to be able to book cast all spells, despite having 15 Le and low concentration. First book, acid ball, disappears without learning anything. Nice. Got a few levels, a nice +3 Le ring from a shop, and lost frost bolt and tele books to a water trap. Extremely nice. Pissed enough I just don't pay attention and die meleing a large gnoll in UD2.

Well there goes sradacjr! Cleared the VD but didnt kill the carpenter. killed the healer and got healing. Was in SMC making my way to UD when a horde of white worms well above my level got the best of me. heres a quick snippit. Only left stuff in that was relevant, Spellbooks left, nice items I found, weapon skills, etc. I have the full flg whenever its needed. Note the reason for being such a low level, I had my slaves clear most of the tension rooms for me. had a level 12 orc ghul and level 8 bugbear zombie. both were taken down FAST by the worms.

Well if we wanted to be really regimental we could have all books blessed and set with the same number of charges/readings in ADOMBot. However every challenge needs a bit of chaos, and in this you get whatever the luck of the draw serves in your wish. With your non-spellcaster I'm sure you'll be wanting to hold out a while anyway before trying to read - enough time to get the necessary holy water.

I've finally got some free time to start on this challenge myself - expect a death report shortly.

Okay, so decided to go with the traditional grey elven wizard. Started with Le 19 and To 7 - pretty normal. Went with spellbooks of Frost Bolt, Magic Missile, Acid Ball, Invis and Teleportation (as I said in the other thread). Only read the Frost Bolt and Invis to start with - saving the others till later. Starting Talents were Long Stride and Potent/Strong Aura (I'll be going for the bookcasting talents obviously).

Started out getting the Terinyo quests, then nipped to the bandit town where I stole a cloak of defense and studded leather armour. Stupidly realised that was a mistake when Yergius refused to teach me pickpocketing - oh well, don't need it anyway. Went to the SMC but couldn't find the blanket, so I stashed my books in the bandit town. At this point I notice that my screen size is oddly set at 30 rows... oh well, shouldn't make too much difference hopefully.

Went ID-scumming for a blinkie corpse, getting to level 7 in the process. St and To increased a few points in the mean time, and Le went up by 2 thanks to a comfy chairs room effects. Then decided to dive through the UD for a bit of fun. Forge UD3, trap room + ants UD4, grey altar UD5. Found I have a brutal adamantium mace and a whip of mayhem - nice. A bit of patience and I got a precrowning - Wyrmlance. Could be worse I guess. Will proceed shortly... Current status:

Took gut's save, wished for magic missile * 3, ice ball and teleport, read one magic missile once, got blanket, killed Kranach, got slain by stone block trap in UD.

Tried again just for fun (with same save, no adombot skillz) but this time wanted to go for 4 x magic missile, 1 teleport, using magic missile as only method for dealing damage. Not doing too badly, but with the crappy learning, I don't think 4 books is going to be enough to complete the game - I will need pretty high effectivity in magic missile in the mid-late game - like up in the 30-40s ideally, and I just don't seeing it happening, even if I now wait for ages, somehow kill oracle (dangerous with bolt spell only), steal crown of science (also tricky), bless my books, I suspect it just won't be enough... will see how it goes though.

First reading only got me 150 castings though, so not very hopeful... PC level 9 at moment.

Cause I didn't go into the SMC at level 7, or rush off to the CoC with my starting equipment. Slow and careful wins the race :P

As a little update I've been to HMV and dived down to Dwarftown, avoiding unecessary fights. Got a few herbs in the Big Room, but could only stabilise a morgia/moss square. Dwarftown prices are hideous, so I'm relying on HMV for cash. Don't have the patience for extensive herb farming or another precrown, so might just get on with the game. To is still just 10 though, with its potential at the same level! Curse these grey elves! Will soon eat the oracle and nab the crown of science, and when I have enough holy water I'll give all the books their final read (after that book-casting all the way).

The plan is to bookcast all the way through the game (priestly discounts should help with that), using memorized charges only for problematic areas like ToEF and Air Temple.

Hey... longtime listener, first time caller. No, um... I used to post in the hof years ago, and I've been browsing since I just started playing again. Trying this challenge out and I just wanted to report in. :)

I rolled a hurthling necromancer just for the hell of it, using frost bolt, mm, farsight, teleport, and cure critical. Going necromancer is probably going to make things harder, although on tough levels I might be able to frost bolt through a lich or something. Learned the two attack spells and cure critical and ran through the smc, getting lucky by finding two shields. Right now at exp level 14, having done UD and the carpenter quest. So far the strategy is working out (regular casting just enough to get +10 power, lowering book casting by 6 pp). Food was a serious concern due to low str and book casting. At one point, I had to drink a potion of exchange to avoid starving. BUT... I've just picked up an ordinary ring, so things are looking up. :)

This is why I play gnomes and drakelings rather than gray elves :P To potential of 10? That was crippling. With gnomes especially it's easy to get the Le stat up high. Ah well, live and learn - or die and learn, which is the ADOM way...

Pentavia has completed Thundarr's non-portal quests (got giant bat as the first one) and reached level 13 in process. Unfortunately, she lost one of the spellbooks to a well-placed fireball trap. Fortunately, it was KotA, which proved to be largely useless (I should've picked a second bolt book instead).

Looking good. How useful are you finding the 4 spells you have? Do you use melee/missiles much?

so book casting trains MA quite a bit I know since you gotta regen all that pp, does it train Le also?

Nah, gotta be book learning to learn yer Learning methinks...

Unless your Le stat is rubbish, spellbooks of Darkness aren't going to help very much either... Learn Deathray or Petrification, and expect the stat to increase maybe...

Otherwise stick to gemology and cannibalism.

I've gotten a little bored with this game to be honest. Very little chance of dying (currently contemplating the pyramid while herb farming), just everything takes so LONG. I find myself walking around small mobs instead of killing them. Still, I may come back to Fivebooks the necromancer at another time.

Yeah, maybe wasn't the most exciting of ideas, since spellcasters can easily win the game if they need to. Maybe it would be better if we redid it in a couple of months with IronMan rules. No herb-scumming and a constant increase in monster difficulty should make things more fun :)

Pentavia was laid low by Signal 291. :(

In retrospect, if I had to do this challenge again, I'd pick two Acid Balls, two Frost Bolts and a single Teleportation, read one copy of Ball/Bolt to tatters (to have enough charges for tight spots/efficiency training), and bookcast from the rest.
