Yeh another failed ULE ending (check some of my previous posts).

I was planning no more ULE attempts, but rather wanted to relax a bit with less scumming. I rolled a ranger for what I thought would be a normal game.

After finding my first pool I think 'Why don't I drain it? Vipers will be spawned and I will die, but what if I get something good like permanent invisibility? My first sip of that pool resulted in the message 'what do you wish for'. I decided to wish for the most wanted item before visiting khelly ... an AoLS. This just screamed ultra ending.

I decided to get a precrowns. My first precrown was the jet-black battle axe "Executor". My second one was crown of leadership. I tried to get a third but waisted allot of time because I miscalculated the level requirements and had to go to the pyramid.

A while later I find a RoDS in the water dragon's lair. And a few other random RoDS for a total of 3-4 stored away at the old barbarian glade. One more wish was used for pairs seven league boots, and another for rings of weakness to scum my str to 99.

I killed all orb guardians and finished all the ultra ending quests, but I am missing one thing: I didn't have any wands of monster creation. Apparently I identified one. It must have gotten destroyed in the blue dragon caves, or by traps in the mana temple but I don't remind ever finding one. I checked all stores and the casino but no wand.

My birthday was just after day 90. After visiting the stone circle I went pool sipping in darkforge on my birthday with 2 blessed rings of luck and the ank. I had 2 blessed scrolls of luck (sadly not useful for removing doomed status) and three cooked karmic corpses. I got doomed once (eat a corpse), lost faith smile once (I think a scroll of luck worked), and finally got one wish before draining all pools. Since you cannot carry pools to D50 I used this one for the wands of monster creation while keeping my RoDS for speed wishes to kill Andy.

Finally I decided to go to the quickling tree. This is the first time I do this for an ultra ending. I enter the tree with the trident of hunting and the elven armor from bugville, bracer of regeneration, a cloak of invisibility, an amulet of hunger, an amulet of life saving, and 8 stommacemptia herbs. I eat a herb after getting my first corpse to prevent becoming bloated while satiated. Moments later I am starving to death in the 'ZOOM' part of the quickling tree. I decide to pray but im still chaotic, and I have been saccing to the L god all game. Here I am with all my equipment outside of the tree including 3 or 4 RoDS, 99 str and absolutely nothing that will increase my satiation value. My only option was to put off my uncursed amulet of hunger, and to put on my AoLS. It turned to dust moments later...

So I went back up to the barbarian glade, and took 5 blessed stomafillia herbs with me this time. After killing most of the quicklings I ended up with a stack of 20 or so cooked corpses. I decide to eat them all in the tree (you cant take them out because the same restriction of 160 stones is applied. I was standing on the stairs, w5'ing till im no longer bloated, with only 100/800hp left and decide to berserk a quickling with my blessed trident of hunting greedy to get another corpse while i still had more than i could ever need an a crossbow in my hand. 'the quickling hits you' *a shitload of times '... you die'.

At this point I had
* About 180 speed
* 3 wishes for speed
* At least one blessed potion of cure corruption
* at least 40 slaying ammo + at least 20 demon slaying ammo
* 99 str, 60+ dex
I just know I could have beaten Andy easily.

My mistakes:
1) not getting to some flavor or L before entering the tree so I could have prayed for satiation and healing.
2) Berserking quicklings
3) Waisting to much time in the tree. The weight restrictions makes you vulnerable and quicklings become more powerful the more you kill.
4) Not bringing a wand of digging to get the the quicklings before starving.
5) Not wishing for another AoLS is just plain stupid.
6) Thinking the quickling tree wil be very easy

ps. Rangers find allot of nice weapons, I found more that 5 weapons of devastation, two sword of sharpness, 3 phase daggers, a murderous whip.

I think there comes a time when you are strong enough and you just need to try to beat the game. Greedy scumming after this point often leads to death.

I often limit the scumming I do just because often, overconfidence + lack of attention + stupidity + a lot of dangerous places/monsters in ADOM often leads to death even for really powerful characters.

You know, you can always enter, empty initial room, get naked, drop everything, pop back out (assuming your tree is nice and near barbs glade), get another 160 or whatever stones of gear, and head back in... twice as much gear = twice as easy? Maybe not quite, but not far off... Too late now though :).
