View Full Version : First Ultra - ULE Hurthling Beastfighter

This particular beastfighter was incredibly lucky in the early and mid-game. UD:1 had a surge of power guarded by a named dark orc. Orc moved off object, I see it's the bracers of war, so I move past him, almost get killed (took me down to 1 HP), put bracers on, beat him, move on. Next up, getting a cooked-corpse bonanza precrown in Dwarftown, that gave the ring of immunity. Next up, did pyramid. Entered the place, felt a surge of power, saw a named chaos sister, put her to rest, got Ironfist. That's when I REALLY started thinking that this guy is probably ultra-material.

Next bit of game was rather tedious, farming herbs and killing monsters while using some shrewd dragon investors to place my capital wisely. Since I'd decided to do an ultra, was rather put-off by tales of AD being 'a fearsome opponent', so I gave 200 million GP to Garth in training for each stat. Needless to say, this put my stats (eventually) in the 70-80 region, so everything else was pretty much a breeze. Took down ACW, Nuurag'Varn, Cat Lord, Keriax, Emperor Moloch with missiles, most other opponents were just melee'd.

In the end-game, got into a spot of bother after getting crowned and to level ~40 while still doing the Medal of Chaos quests. I had been L+ but only the 3rd farmer dropped a corpse, so my alignment was hit pretty badly, so I had to think of something in order to get to that L+ status already. Casino had no healing-spell books so I resorted to doing the Library (thought the extra SoCR for the Weird Tome might be useful as well), got my book (CLW). Accidentally read it a bit too much, but still had something like 900 castings of it. Went to HMV, got Hawskslayer, take him to Water Dragon Lair where he gets scared by my unholy aura. I run after him while healing him (fortunately was WAY faster), corner him, keep healing him until a blasted dragon turtle comes around the corner and breathes him into oblivion. Next up, read scroll of familliar summoning, get flesh golem, heal it until I run out of CLW. Still no L. Throw all 15 potions of healing at the thing while it's injured, still no good. Was on the verge of giving up and just doing a normal ending OR hoping that killing all the chaotic stuff on D:50 would take me to L+ but found a writing set, wrote scroll of balance only to discover that I only needed about 350 alignment stones, so I lured a beggar from Banditville to Terinyo, trapped him in a house with a narrow corridor and just pasted away 'g$A1000' commands until I got L+.

From here on, it was quite a breeze. Went to D:50, woke up balors, teleported near gate, Fisty had moved, teleported on gate, passed through, beat Andor to a pulp (critically injured) using bare fists, equipped TotRR and shot to death with demon slayers for the remainder of his health. Most of the damage I've incurred actually came from the stuff AD summoned, some WMoPC and Chaos Warriors, IIRC. AD really does hit like a little girl.

Looking back, all that Garth-training was unnecessary, but I'd never faced Keriax or the Emperor Moloch or AD before, so I wanted to be as buff as possible. In hindsight, I might also have cleared D:50 for the extra XP and score, seeing as I finished off with ~6 corruptions, without having used any of the 13 SoCR (Weird Tome + Khelly + Mystic + HMV ) or 3 PoCC. I must say, taking the chaos artifacts down to D:48 and then doing unicorn quest, teleporting down fast, not staying on D:50 more than a few turns makes corruption management VERY easy for ULEs.

EDIT: Another problem was the AoLS for Khelly. Had to drink all of the pools in DF to get it on the very last one. Luckily there was an altar in NDC, so removing dooming 3 separate times wasn't much of an issue. I did eventually get that wish and -Death and -Para, both very useful intrinsics, but I also watched in delight and then horror as I got perma-invis and see-invis and subsequently lost those.

Your stats were in the 80's before fighting the ACW?
I've had games where my HP's weren't in the 80's when fighting the ACW.

You can actually have a grand ol' time not taking any hits from AD
by paralyzing him first ;) s'how I (eventually) killed him on my thief.
Stupid thief critical power would cause him to teleport everywhere
randomly whenever I hit him.

No, I trained the stats immediately before doing the ToEF, so I actually did the ACW with just herb-stats and the 1-2-3 increases they'd got by the time I reached the top-level. Increases stopped while I was going to the library, in the 75-80 range. Perception, which had been maxed out ever since I paid Garth, went from 20 to 69. so for 222 million GP I got a grand total of 100 increases (potential + stat) . If you can drink some potions of stat or potions of potential stat, it'll rise faster. If it gets drained by something, it'll just bounce back up.

Wasn't really sure whether that wasn't more trouble than it would've been worth. From what sorear and quik told me on IRC it takes a while to make paralyzation stick, turns which can be used to hit Andy hard, so I did that and never really bothered to paralyse him plus you might end up using as many turns to get him paralysed as you get free attacks because of him being paralysed.

That's if he stands next to you. If you're some squares away, you receive no retaliation, and if you place yourself correctly and you are paralyzation resistant it's easy to hit him twice with one beam.

But I only fought the guy once. Do your own thing!
