The next installment in my ongoing series to try to win with every class: Elemena, the High Elf Elementalist. This was my first win with a high elf, and my first game passed level 5 with an Elementalist. At this point, I would basically say elementalists work like this: they're a wizard with three spells, crappy skills, class powers and modifiers, and can't find books to save their life. I think I had found one book by the time I finished the Pyramid--a good one, at least, Darkness. Might be the second class that I'd strongly consider always taking TH (the other being weaponsmith) to try to boost the dismal book count.

Started off by visiting Bugville, got up to around level 10. Might have gone higher, but it's a bit sketchy doing it without a torch. I don't know the positions of the bugs well enough to really feel comfortable with it. Took care of some business around CoC, killed an owlbear for the dwarf, killed a dark druid, and freed the spirit of a dwarven berserker. Dug some graves and killed a few master liches, and a lich king, and found an RoDS. Saved Khelly for my teleport book (I guess I got some SoCR too...), raided Darkforge for some RDSM. Got water orb, and crowned with Iron Crown of Havlor. Spent most of the rest of the game fighting with an eternium 2-hander that I found in Darkforge. Don't normally play casters without a shield, but the extra DV/PV from the crown seemed to let me get away with it. Killed ACW with blindness + melee. Found Acid Ball in the Casino, which pretty much made the rest of the game a breeze. Killed cat lord (easy) and a ki-rin (hard) on the cat lord level. The ki-rin was an interesting experience--I don't see them too often, and usually they're non-hostile. They apparently shoot death rays and are immune to fire and acid. Oh, and they shrug bolts like crazy. Nasty things. I found a lot of rare monsters this game, in fact. Ki-rin, eternium golem, fairy dragon. Ran into a greater undead vault on D:40. 12 emperor liches, but it looked like it had 4 artifacts in it. One was definitely ring of immunity; I thought one might be RoR (turns out it wasn't); another piece of armor and a weapon. Figured I'd chance it. Didn't go so hot. Cleared some of the initial undead (with surprising difficulty), but the moment I (accidentally) opened the lich room, I found myself confused and surrounded by 5 gorgons. Lovely way to start. I threw on an amulet of pet. resistance and decided to teleport away.

Killed AKW, and then did Mana Temple. Acid balled archmage, then worked my way back up and acid balled the earth/air temples. Cast from HP is ridiculously overpowered... I basically stopped playing with PP from the Mana Temple onward. Cleared D:50 via wand of destruction, but ended up killing all of the balors anyway. Got myself cleansed and won the game.

[edit]As it stands right now, I've won with every race except Orc, and every class except Fighter, Ranger, Bard, Healer, Weaponsmith, Mindcrafter, Barbarian, Necromancer. I did win with an Orc Barbarian in the ADOMPossible challenge, as well.

At this point, I would basically say elementalists work like this: they're a wizard with three spells, crappy skills, class powers and modifiers, and can't find books to save their life.

They get practically no books, because they're _intended_ to be independent of books. To put things into perspective, books fall as frequently for elementalists as they do for classes who aren't specialised casters, like monks or archers (or barbarians).

Their main weapons are their three basic spells, and they get minor knowledge in a few additional spells later on, for use in special circumstances - fire ball, improved fireball, earthquake, ice ball, lightning ball. They get enough knowledge to depend mostly on their three standard spells for most of the game, apart from the midgame, when they have to kill a lot of stuff for every new level and are thus in danger of running out of knowledge.

Necro could be a nice followup - a specialist spellcaster who finds books ...

Just looking at your class-based spell list, you didn't put in very heavy use. Elementalist is one of my favourite classes, and i generally have at least one bolt spell at +40 power or better. The booty-kicking such high-power spells exercise is fun to behold.

Congrats on the quick win! And even with your first elementalist who ever amounted to anything - nice work!

They probably actually play a lot more like mindcrafters than wizards, now that I think of it, although mindcrafter's abilities are probably even more specialized. Similar skillsets for the two classes too, for that matter.

Maybe a non-pet necro. The level 1 game I tried (and regrettably lost the other day) has exhausted my patience for pets for the moment.

I have this problem with all of my casters--I prefer to play them as pseudo-melee characters with some magic backup, probably more appropriate for a paladin, for example. Regular mobs I usually just kill in melee--it's only if I feel that it's a dangerous monster (or a spider factory or something) that I'll really start to bring out my spells. I hate destroying items with spells, so if I'm doing a vault or something, it's magic missile or frost bolt if anything. Or acid ball, if I'm beyond the point of caring or the monsters are too dangerous to worry about it.

Congrats on the quick win! And even with your first elementalist who ever amounted to anything - nice work!

Thanks :)

Funny, all my troll barbarians seem to find ~2 book stores per games...
