Rolled a drakeling bard, one of my favorite combo's. He was candle born and got the seven league boots heir gift.

Early game i relied on pets. First I got ants from PC2 to get the shield from the SC, then got herbalism but turning the animals against there own master druid. I cleared the puppy cave for an even better shield.

After going trough the UC I went to get a few killer bug pets with my now decent DV. I could easily pacify the entire bug level with my bard.

With these killer bugs I could easily complete the dwarf quests and I did some herb farming. Then I did a stoma-powered gremlin bomb after clearing all outside area's (pyramid, darkforge, graveyard and high kings). This gave me plenty of rings/potions/wands/scrolls and boosted my stats into the 30's. I also got 2 rings of djinni summoning. One wish was used for concentration.

Then it was smooth sailing. Cleared the temples, robbed the casino, no greater vault was found, got purifier as uselessness gift :).

I started to clear the sides of D50 with it (picking up lots of corruption while melee'ing them. At this time i was either using RotMC with ring of slaying for melee, or ring of elemental mastery+ring of ice for alchemy 'fireballs'.

After clearing the sides and after finding a WoW with 4 or 5 charges I used one wish for spellbooks of acid ball. I used a wand of destruction for destroy one side of the level with the lever. Then I teleported into the middle room. I started acid balling.

At some point I noticed my ring was gone and I had only 20 hp (of the 600? or so I had) left. Before I realised what happened (i skipped allot of text by pressing enter after each acid ball) I did another cast and...

died.

Obviously one of the balors summoned some cats, and I killed one causing the ring to explode (or implode or w/e).
Screw the master cat lol.

That's a smart balor.

I'm confused, balors can summon?

Yes, they can.

All sorts of stuff, from spider factories (that makes for a nastier D:50 than you might've expected) to greater fire elementals and all sorts of things like that. A balor really is bad news if it summons in a dangerous level.

I've had diamond golems followed by doppelganger kings within a couple of rounds - made for a fun final level.

That's odd...in all the games that I've killed all the balors I've come
up against, none of them have ever summoned. Maybe I'm just lucky?

Does it have something to do with the way you attack them, perhaps?

Wow. I've never heard of someone actually getting their character killed by the ring blowing up before. I always thought it was possible, but never heard a report of it 'til now.

EDIT: looks like the ring blowing up didn't kill him directly but got him close, then something else did. But I wouldn't be surprised if the former has happened before.
