Weaponsmiths are a surprisingly interesting and fun class to play. Hurthlings, for example, start with ridiculously good starts (I had ~20 St, To, Dx, and enough learning to be literate) and the obligatory anvil. Skillset is solid, although lacking healing. I explored SMC then did quick healing run, then dove UD and found my first forge on UD:3. What I really like about smiths was their level 6 ability to turn metal into ingots without needing to waste time mining... at ~100s of metal per ingot, you can empty out a random spear trap and turn it into 5 DV and 5 PV. Although I don't normally recommend this talent, Treasure Hunter for weaponsmiths is awesome because a huge portion of the junk gear you find can just be melted down and used to improve your current gear. Finished UD, dove through CoC to DT. Basically didn't use herbs at all this game--not that I really needed to, given my starting stats. Did Thrundarr quests, Pyramid. Got water breathing from a helm, so I picked up the RTC at level 16. Did Griffyard, including killing some master liches while graverobbing. Cleared Darkforge, used pools to get -Para, -SeeI, -Death, and a wish (AoLS). Saved Khelly, got Water Orb. I think I found 2 RoDS and 3-4 random SoCR drops this game, which is pretty exceptional. Got crowned with (ugh) Hammer of the Gods, but got Lightning Immunity, which was nice since with RTC + BDSM + crowning + class power, I had all four immunities. Surge of power on ToEF:1 gave me the only good random artifact I ever found--crown of leadership. ACW went down easily to RTC while he was blinded. Thought I'd have to use a wish to get myself frost bolt, but a friendly ogre magus helped me get the RoTHK.

Did Casino, killed cat lord while slowed with missiles for massive XP. Cleared other temples, killed AKW. No greater vaults, but I did find Thunderstroke on a Great Red Wyrm in a lesser vault. Earth/Air were easy. By the endgame I was running around with 50+ DV/PV and 600+ HP, so I was pretty much indestructible. Uselessness was purifier, which I would have used (combined with my [+17,+5] eternium shield it would have been okay) except that I already had 13 levels in polearms at the time. D:50 was a breeze... balors died in 3-4 hits. Used a bunch of my SoCR to cure corruption, left the Chain for the win.

Cool. Weaponsmith sounds like a fun class, reading this.

I think I found 2 RoDS and 3-4 random SoCR drops this game, which is pretty exceptional.
Yet you do not recommend TH. ;)

Well, strictly speaking, all of those items were useless junk as far as this game was concerned. One RoDS is still in my inventory, you'll notice. The other I used on my GoGS before the final dive, but I had been carrying both wishes since before the ToEF. I left D:50 with about 8 SoCR (mostly from Khelly), which I used instead of bothering with unicorn quest. I think I still had 1-2 left over and a few PoCC as well.

To be fair though, I don't attribute any of those drops to TH. I would have found all of those items without it due to normal drops.

I know you're far better at ADOM than me, but this does strike me as a bit illogical.

Anyway, I'm sorry for bringing up the topic in the first place. Too much words have been wasted on it already, moreover this thread is about you scoring a win, and a very nice one at that. Good job and thanks for sharing, it makes me want to try a weaponsmith.

Well, the typical argument of a TH enthusiast is that every time an AoLS, spellbook, or another good item drops, they immediately assume that TH is responsible despite the fact that this is not necessarily the case. I am facetiously applying the same reasoning to normal drops.

As far as these items being useless goes, here's my thinking: one wish and most of my SoCR were never used, and the second wish was not used for anything vital, therefore they were not essential. But not only did I have extra, but I had extra in abundance, therefore, it cannot be reasonably argued that these items were "just in case" something went wrong. 6 extra SoCR can hardly be considered as things I'm carrying "just in case" I get stiff muscles on D:50, for example. Ditto with the ~20 holy waters I was sitting on. Therefore, these items were extraneous.

Look, I really am sorry to have started this. With my first response, I was teasing you a little bit, but I regret that now. After that, I really should have stopped. :(

So, once again: I'm sorry. Thanks for posting an inspiring win.

It was all TH. If you didn't get that talent, you would have no gear at all and would instead be a corpse on the VD floor waiting for the next adventurer to walk past and say "Yum, real hurthling!"

If you hadn't chosen TH, you would have died within 1000 turns.
It's scummier than ID hopping, kick robbing shops, and gremlin
bombing all put together. It is too powerful of a feature to ever
be used, and honestly, it's probably a game bug. Continue using
this obvious exploit if you wish, but be forewarned, all of your
victories will be tainted in my eyes.

I can't believe there are still players who consider TH a viable option. It is by far the worst talent of them all. Strong legs and affinity with whips are much better. After picking TH, it is in fact hard to see how you could still win the game. I'd rather be doomed and permanently confused. IIRC, very few people ever made it.

I think somebody did try a "permanently confused man" challenge once. I don't think it ended well.
