Ngrug, Orcish Barbarian, is my first victory since I began playing roguelikes (Nethack in '99, SLASH'EM in '00, and ADOM in '01?). My thanks for all of your help to the members of this forum (and the Usenet group) for answering my questions, to Andy Williams for the Guidebook, and to the guy (sorry, I don't know his name) who edited the Improved Guidebook. And, of course, to Thomas Biskup, for providing me with so much entertainment, so much frustration, and helping to reveal my weakness for random positive reinforcement. :D

I can't think of any particular highlights, except that D:50 was far easier than I expected. I got lucky with intrinsic invisibility while drinking from pools for a wish so that I could give an AoLS to Khelavaster (for the scrolls). To my embarrassment, I generated several artifacts that I wasn't even aware of until I looked at this log- Thunderstroke, Protector, Ironfist. The high stats are mostly from "boost" potions in the hopes of improving my final score. Grod was fantastic. The game was unusual in that for about the first twenty levels I probably found no more than a half dozen potions of water and scrolls of identify. Frustrating, but it all turned out well! :)

I'm not sure how to properly present this  (and too exhausted to think) so:

Congratulations on the win! If you put the .flg in [code] tags it will format it better.

D:50 usually is easy if you're prepared, and most players are over-prepared on their first playthrough since they're so relieved they made it that far that they don't want to risk anything. I know my Elementalist breezed through it on my first win. I would probably say the Tower of Eternal Flames is the hardest part of the game(or the Mana Temple if you're a spellcaster), and once you're past those you're good to go.

On your first victory? Wow.

It's funny how the RNG gave you Grod, then Protector : )

Cash, I don't think it'll take you until 2018, but I guess you've got fair warning now. :D In my case, I think there were several times that I could have won, but I fooled around with over preparing until a stupid mistake took me down. Just pay attention to what you're doing and you'll probably get a victory in no time. :)

Yeah, the RNG giveth, and then it giveth again to no real purpose. :D Now, Skullcrusher + Protector would have been pretty cool.

As for not killing cats, I think I overestimated the importance of the ring, so I've trashed dozens of promising characters just because I accidentally killed a cave tiger somewhere along the way. Not that it's not a great ring, but I think I would have achieved a victory years ago if I wasn't so obsessive about it. Of course, I think by now I've developed mad skillz for dealing with Thibault's subjects without killing them.

Ye, many times, and I hate it. That happened with a blinger for example, that rely heavily on dex, and I ragequitted :P

By the way, it took me more or less the same time since the very first time I played to my first victory, although there were years in between that I didn't play at all.

When I get anywhere near a cat, I tend to pause before every keystroke. If I'm near a cat and a creature with a confusion attack, I'll un-equip my weapons, go to coward, and try to draw the confuser away into a hall so that I can kill it without harming the kitty.
