Well... I attempted a Steel Man game. Basically, you're supposed to stay in the wilderness until you hit level 50. I soon realized I would die of boredom before that happened, and instead elected to stay in the wilderness for a full year. I didn't even last that long though...

Yes, I realize I could have prayed, but I didn't want to. The challenge involves relying on nothing you start the game with, and I took that to include piety.

I tend to try and avoid jackals like the plague when attempting that challenge. It does seem to require more patience than I am able to muster though.

relying on nothing that you start with eh? That means pretty much anything can kill you just about, unless you actually surivive for a few exp lvls somewhow.

Poor wizards.

...

Poor everybody! How and why would one not use what they start with?

I duno. I did pretty well using hand-to-hand until a sword dropped, and I was a Ranger.

monks might be handy for this kind of a challenge

Best to stick to the woods early for easier encounters.

Skeletons patrols come to mind for this sort of challenge. Easy to kill and lots of chances for some loot to pick up. Or also as was mentioned above, forest encounters for a early spear.

I went Ranger for Survival and Dual-Wielding(I figured weapon drops would be way more common than shield ones)

well if you can survive long enough(and be strong enough to kill them) for dragons to start showing up, they can potentially give a shield. Though even if they did it'd most likely end up being junk, like wooden or medium iron. Or if you survived till exp lvl 25 then chaos knights can provide some nice gear, shields included, and even better they actually aren't all that tough. But surviving that long is another story.

Barbarians are such a double edged sword for this challenge too - you desperately want the bows and ammo, to make killing everything else easier, but first you have to be able to survive those encounters... I have killed loads of PCs who got bored of orcs and skeletons and decided to go arrow hunting too soon... Of course, I often try this challenge with PCs without the survival skill, which makes finding food and training food preservation a bit of an urgent problem... then its jackals all the way...
