Check item status endlessly repeats on gold pieces

Starting as a gnome tinkerer, I tried to do "Identify item status", even though I only had the items I started with. When it came to my 40 gold pieces, it kept on failing over and over again without ever ending. I could tell that time was passing, since the move counter was increasing and I could see the villagers moving around. It only stopped when I got hungry.
