How do I get rid of a cursed sword? :(
Either a scroll of uncursing or holy water.
You use a scroll by reading it, you use holy water by dipping the item in it [it turns the ittem blessed, which also removes the curse]. If those two ain't available, you may fight a monster that has disarming as their ability [ratling fencers/warlord/duelists or master swordsmen] - they may knock even cursed weapons outta your hands.
Also you get holy water by placing normal water potions on an altar of coaligned god if he likes you enough - don't forget to offer him stuff from time to time
several ways
- Dipping it in a potion of holy water will bless it and allow you to unequip it
- Reading a scroll of uncursing will allow you to uncurse it
- Reading a scroll of item destruction will get rid of the item
- Fighting a monster with a disarming attack until they force you to lose your grip on the weapon
- You can pray to your god (assuming you have enough piety) and have it uncurse it for you
- You can pray to your god repeatedly until you anger it enough to destroy your equipment (unequip everything else first)
- Although not reliable anything that destroys your equipment can be used to eventually rid yourself of a weapon (if you find some grey oozes you can attack them with it until your weapon corrodes enough to be destroyed but be careful you don't kill it before the weapon is gone or else you'll be left with a -8, 1d8 -8 sword of uselessness that you can't unequip
- There is a spell called remove curse that works the same as a scroll of uncursing
If I forgot any someone else can chime in
That will get rid of any item, and it's noteworthy you need to own at least four for it to work. Wield a gold piece in your other hand, and drop everything except two items you don't mind losing for a 1/4 chance of destroying the cursed sword.
In addition to your list :)
* You can unequip and drop everything else, then stand on an acid or fireball trap and repeatedly trigger it in hopes of destroying the sword. Keep an eye in your HP even if you have resistance.
* You can dip the sword in a potion of raw chaos (somewhat risky depending on which sword it is) of a blessed potion of exchange to transform it into something else. This removes it from your hand.
My CP was destroyed again, so that got rid of the cursed sword. For now I think I will better not equip myself with anything unidentified until in some weeks from now my character starts surviving and I might start to be able to get some spells.:)
Also, dipping an item in a blessed potion of exchange will make it slip from your hands when it changes to a new item.
anon123, even after all these years I never realized you had to have 4 items for the scroll of item destruction to work. Thanks!
That's a very logical decision, but you might want to weight risk vs. reward. Would you not upgrade your +2 PV leather armor for a plate mail averaging +7 PV, even if it might be cursed? You'll learn these things as you go. :D
Well, the vast majority of characters will meet that requirement. Another not so obvious thingy is that they can't destroy other scrolls of their same kind. Anyway, it's nice how an item with an effect obviously meant to be negative can be cleverly used to our advantage!
I've tried using them to get rid of cursed items a few times, but I always dropped everything but the item I wanted to get rid of first--so it never worked and I gave up on that tactic.
I look forward to trying it out again. :-)
