Girdles of greed only count gold in your inventory, not gold in your hands or missile slot. In the latter case, this can result in nasty deaths for gold-heavy merchants who move all of their gold into their missile slot, since you can`t easily choose to move only a small pile of items into missiles, and the merchant will immediately lose a huge amount of carrying capacity.
