Spambot Protection
More blocks needed to stop spam on the forums

Whilst certain blocks are currently in place it's evident from the first fews days of activity on the forum that spambots are getting through. These can be an extreme nuisance if left unchecked. Suggestions so far to improve forum security have been:

-Require e-mail verification for all new forum accounts
-Use a harder to crack distortion text picture
-Human checking of all new account requests
-"I'm a spambot" checkbox to be unticked when registering
-Non-standard question when registering, such as "Spell ADOM backwards"
-Filtering of certain keywords used by spambots (xxx, porn, goatse, etc)
-Filtering of messages containing more than 5 links

(the last two could be disabled for members who already have say over 20 messages, and who want to post lots of links and talk about goatse as part of regular ADOM discussion)

Free Spam Protection and Hack Protection for your website.
IN a world where having a website opens you up to the pain of exploitation by robots, where your blog or CMS is ruthlessly loaded with spam, I decided that I should sit down, and write a php script that helps to stop this relentless suffering thrown at us. In the beginning Spambot Protection was one of my main goals, but became just as equally important was Hacking Protection.

Spambot Protection, and Hack Bot Protection are provided through ZB Block, mentioned below, and more on it's own page. This free script will signifigantly cut down the amount of sucessful comment, and post spam your site gets. It will also end known php exploits, plus many future script exploits due to intelligent inspection of accesses made to your site.

I hope you find my research useful... Please read on.

Spam it is now an unfortunate but inevitable problem of the internet. As most webmasters now realize, by operating an interactive website that contains at least one web form (eg registration, feedback, comments, forum messages, etc), spambots are highly likely to discover and plague a website. These nasty creations crawl across web pages and inundate forums, filling in web forms and sending spam information to the webmaster, website and site visitors.

Through a new protection subsystem, ZB Block has over 40 new signatures to detect the BEHAVIOR of the latest "HTTP_POST" attack bot families. These behavior detections, along with the weaker but still important detections of the 9 most popular "HTTP_USER_AGENT" names, allow ZB Block to essentially kill off these bots. ZB Block is compatible with the most popular CMSes, Bulletin Boards, Forums, and PHP Scripts out there, and protects from thousands of older bots and exploits not only by name on some, but they way they attack YOUR site.

At least only the bots with decent posts are left now. In fact, all those bots seem to be anti-bot, judging from their posts!
