Being in a pit reduces your line of sight, but the game doesn't handle this properly. When you fall into a pit, your line of sight isn't actually reduced until you do something to refresh the display. Similarly, if you do refresh the display while standing in a pit, climbing out doesn't increase your line of sight until you refresh the display again.
