1. Stand on an item.
2. Hold the mouse cursor over the PC long enough for a message about the item to pop up.
3. Click to pick up the item.
4. Message about the item remains until you move the mouse off the square.

EDIT: A similar thing happens when hovering over a monster and attacking it by clicking. If it moves or dies, the hover message isn't hidden until you move the mouse to a different square.
