Owning houses
a place to call home in a friendly settlement

The recent blog post about settlements made me think: if there are so many houses in JADE settlements, what about the ability to own some of them?

Features that every character-owned house should have:
-- a door lock that can't be opened except by a unique key or a Knock spell;
-- low(-er) danger level;
-- walls that can't be dug through by neutral characters who tend to dig.

Parameters which would influence the price and could be influenced by settlement level:
-- size;
-- amount of special rooms (like those that increase healing rate or spell learning rate);
-- garden area (for gardening);
-- monster generation (very cheap houses in poor settlements could have rats, bats, worms, or some other minor pest generated inside regularly);
-- dungeon area (for mining, breeding, or something else);
-- built-in altar;
-- wall strength (against enemies who dig, smash, or are able to cause earthquakes).

Beside the ability to drop temporarily unneeded items safely, pets and companions could also be left there. Some houses could be owned by completing quests, some by purchase, maybe some by killing their former inhabitants.

If you somehow piss the settlement citizens off, they could attempt to break into your house and tear it down, heh.

There are possibilities here, although some of them may be impractical.

One thing the prospective homeowner might want to keep in mind: the property taxes (presumably deducted automatically from one's gold, whether or not one can afford it at the time) will be high. If you fail to pay them, the king's/president's/PM's collector Guido and his boys will pay you a visit, causing 30d6 damage (+10% chance of critical) per round until you pay up. If you kill Guido, then Luigi and Frankie will step in (doubling each time), etc., until everywhere you go looks like the Animated Forest, but with all the obstacles being hostile. They will stop short of killing you (dead people don't pay their taxes), but they will make sure you understand the need to settle your bill, and they do not accept cursed items in payment.

Also, you must spend a certain amount in upkeep and maintenance, or else the neighbors will confront you with accusations that you're bringing down local property values. They can be rather nasty when they get riled up. In extreme cases, they may bring the local Homeowner's Association into the situation, and if you thought Guido, Luigi and Frankie were bad, you ain't seen nuthin' yet... :)
