Upgrade build system for Ubuntu/Debian
Both Ubuntu and Debian have new stable releases, not sure if it's relevant

When I went to download the new pre-release, I noticed that the Ubuntu version is for 12.04 LTS, and the Debian version is for Debian 6.

Ubuntu recently released a new LTS, 14.04, and Debian 7 has been stable for quite a long time.

It's probably not an issue at the moment, the executables should work , but it might be in the future. It might be worth looking in to building for Ubuntu 14.04 and Debian 7 instead.

Well, why? They're forward-compatible, but not necessarily backwards-compatible, and both versions are still in active supports. What benefits does building on a newer release confer that outweighs losing support for two popular and active releases?

Agreed. It's not an issue until it stops working for some reason.
