If it is guaranteed--or even set at a very high percentage, that's pretty brutal. ME offer pretty unique gameplay, and it's a lot of fun to play ME Barbarians, Beastfighters, etc. Having their crowning gifts taken away--especially for something like the staff of creation [great situationally, sure, but nothing like the other racial gifts which everyone can derive quite a bit of use from]--is a real kick in the balls, so to speak.
