Never tried with vortices, but have you tried casting darkness on the last level? If it can't see you, it won't explode, I suppose :P

I hate giant slugs, never bother with their corpses. I've had chars with 100 food preservation and lots of 'of hunting' ammo get no corpse after 30+ kills, while my last char found a tension room...
