The melee weapons will probably get you to the top level of the tower -- but you do NOT want to melee the ACW. Trust me on this, I lost a very, very promising troll melee character a couple of weeks...

First Aid can save a low-level character who doesn't have the herbs, potions, or spells to remove sickness or poisoning. Beyond that point, I don't continue to use it.

And besides, if you are quick about doing DD, you can hustle back to the puppy cave and still rescue the puppy in time -- much easier with a few extra levels and a new spellbook or two from DD.
