Not useful. definitely not. first, the food needed. you ned to buy some lizs first.

Note that this was tried with an orcish priest, not VERY useful, and there was an altar (co aligned) (useful). From what i noted before stupidly stopping all water traps, you can't really get items due to gremlisn almost instantly generating. Also, the number you killed leveled them up ALOT. and when i say a LOT, i mean it. When i had cleared the traps, a gremling got me to very close. One also reduced me to 1/2 hp. Oo

You can avoid gremlin attacks with invisibility, and prayer can be used for satiation (though obviously finding a bigger source of food is handier). Overall, if you're running out of food a lot then it's not that turn-efficient.

Alternatively, have the gremlins either drown, or fight amongst themselves (my favourite, cos I love alarm traps).

The water cave, while a great place for a gremlin bomb, doesn't work in this case - you can only pickpocket in the water cave, which is not oging to be very turn efficient I think. They drop nothing when they die from drowning. Fighting amoungst themselves is probably good though. You can also get pets to kill them. Plenty of ways to reduce the impact of killing thousands of the buggers.
