I don't bother much with the first kill, but if it is feasible to get Courage, I do. It's useful. I know the GB says "just don't get surrounded" but that's quite utopian, I have finished the game (so I guess I can be considered an advanced player by GB standards) and I still get surrounded from time to time.

When in darkness, you can always see the light (unless you're in ADOM)
Most successful combos for me: Grey elf wizards, trollish healers, dark elf beast-fighters, Gnomey monks, and any race barbarians.
