    Default YAVP: Hurthling Archer (rocks only)

    I stole this idea from Barry Kearns, who played a game like this in gamma 9. The PC is only allowed to pick up rocks, food, gold, and an amulet of light for the mana temple. I also had to allow wands of digging/pickaxes to get into the temples, as I think Barry's character was a monk and didn't have this problem.

    Early problems were getting enough rocks... I had to scum the ID incessantly for tension rooms, and eventually just picked up every rock in the game. Did dwarf quests up to arena (strangely, thrundarr still gives you the quest if you've killed the arena master), griffyard, bugville for a ton of dex and speed. My biggest regret is not visiting the maze around this point, as wi was fucked anyway and pe increases would've been nice. Drained pools for some very nice intrinsics and 2(!) wishes... Spent wishes on find weakness and tactics (maybe a mistake). Confusion was a huge threat, so anything that confuses was shot from way out of sight (including ACW, who was easy this way). Cat lord and AKW also fell this way (took like 100+ rocks each). Archmage was the hardest kill in this game, as his line of sight has been beefed up a bunch. I had to put the whole corridor in the mana temple between us and he was still back in range in like two moves. Anyway, it was lots of fun, as the game remained difficult after ToEF.

    How did you handle dopplegangers with no melee attacks, wands, or spells?

    Mostly I didn't... I had to run away from them like a wuss. :| They popped up very frequently while I hung out in the big room, so I'd drag them down to an altar below and sac them. With high speed and later invis you don't have to worry as much, but it still helps to convert every altar.

    A bigger problem was actually not having swimming or any means to freeze water. I think I had to pray like 3 times in the middle of rivers.
