    Default Friday 13th Challenge - August 2010

    Hello everyone!

    I have decided to take it upon myself to host the Friday 13th challenge game this year, which appears to have went unnoticed by the community. So it's time to hastily put one together.

    Friday 13th... In a world far, far away, where many different races live together, in peace or in war, it is the first of the month of Unicorn. Darknight. It is said that everyone who should set off to adventure on this day shall be cursed for life. Felicia, the petty hobbit thief, born in the month of Wolf, was therefore unfortunate to have chosen this day for thieving. Very unfortunate. She wanted to steal from a travelling ring merchant. Sneaking close to the merchant's cart as he was talking with some hobbits a few yards away, she quickly grabbed an electrum ring from the cart. However, as she pulled it onto her fingers, a dreadful, high-pitched scream was heard - and unfortunately, the merchant noticed it too. He signalled to his bodyguard, who pulled out his sword and ran after Felicia. She ran for her life, trying to yank the accursed ring off her finger, but it was stuck - she just couldn't take it off, she didn't have the strength.
    Felicia kept running, in fact, she ran quite far before she could finally shake off her pursuer for a time. She ran on though, fearing that the guard is still lurking nearby, eventually coming to a narrow mountain pass. She crossed even that before finally stopping. Where was she now? She didn't know, but decided that she wouldn't try and turn back now. She'd explore this place and maybe return later, when they surely won't be looking for her any longer.
    Lucky I have my adventuring equipment with me, she thought as she started walking down the road ahead of her. But she had no idea at this point what she got into...

    Rules

    Okay, that's the story. You'll be playing the aptly-named Felicia, trying to complete this adventure now that it has started. You can download her right here. The objective is simple: win! I will lead a highscore showing each character whose adventure is finished, whether it is a victory or just plain death. Felicia only has one life, therefore you only get one try - so take care! Winning characters will be ranked (if there are more than one) according to how much they receive of the following bonus points:

    Normal win - 1 point.
    Ultra or OCG win - 2 points (not including the above).
    Never remove the curse on you - 1 point.
    Play doomed from the start: pray until you get doomed then never remove it - 4 points.*
    No morgia, moss or spenseweed used in any way, shape or form - 2 points.
    Finish under 30000 turns - 3 points.
    Never pray for any reason other than crowning (this includes pre- and postcrowning) - 1 point.
    Complete the Minotaur Maze - 2 points.
    Receive the Weird Tome - 1 points.
    Save the cute dog successfully and kill Kranach (neither must be done via a wish) - 2 points.
    Don't get the Healing skill, ever - 3 points.
    Never enter the ID - 1 point. (Exception for ultra aspirants - you may enter to look for Filk and Malakai, but you must follow Ironman challenge rules for the duration of the dive)

    If there is a tie, the one who has the single highest-scoring bonus from these wins (for example, if one has completed it doomed while the other has completed it in under 30000 turns, the first one of the two players wins). If there is still a tie, the smaller turncount wins.

    Those who die will be ranked according to their exp, disregarding all of the above bonus points. The more exp you have, the higher you score. Those who die must share the cause of death and their experience points at least. Those who win are encouraged to post a .flg and should tell us which points they are eligible for. Be honest, no cheating is allowed, including save scumming, AdomBot, and the rest of the cheating arsenal. It's a friendly competition anyways, why burden your conscience with it?

    Additional rules: no piety overflow abuse, no dragon gold doubling, and you mustn't try and start a wish engine. If I have missed any other game-breaking bugs or exploits, please remind me. The time limit for starting is the 13th of September, and the time limit for finishing up is the 13th of October; the competition may be closed early if there is too little interest, but I'll probably leave it up and running.

    A rule extension regarding revelation of character-specific data: Please try to avoid uncovering anything which might give a great advantage to following players, especially early on. For example, try not to reveal what the cursed ring is (players might have to make decisions about what item to uncurse when they have multiple cursed items; this might make the decision easier and can be potentially of a great advantage). Other things like the two JellySlayer mentions (crowning gifts and vault locations) are not likely to make such a big difference, so if you want to reveal it, it's no problem.

    And let the challenge start!

    *You are allowed to undoom yourself for a short time if needed for crowning, but wear a ring of doom or avoid fighting any monsters for this time. After getting crowned, get doomed once again via praying. Similarly, you can get undoomed for a short while if you intend to enter the Chaos Gate, but wear a source of dooming after you enter the plane.

    Time for the shortest challenge ever.

    Will try doomed. I estimate that I will survive 500 turns.

    [update]Things are going surprisingly well. I've killed the carpenter and Jharod, have some half-decent equipment, and am currently level 10.
    [update2]Just made it to Dwarftown. Found herbs on PC:4, so I've boosted my To quite a bit (not Dx since I haven't had uncursing available). Surge of power on D:9 gave Long Sting. Thrundarr wants dwarven chaos knight.

    Let's see. I got killed by this insanely dangerous monster, what was it.. a skeleton.

    Got stuck in the VD between a giant rat and a skeleton while low on HP, to be precise. I prayed but of course nothing happened. I thought only being doomed would prevent praying.

    I'll add a rule extension about this. I don't want to spoil spectator enjoyment for other competitions, so the general policy is that you can reveal most of them, except those that are quite likely to make a difference early on.

    I'm in. Will be a short game, I think.

    [edit] It WAS short. Went to Terinyo, got puppy, Jharod and Kranach quests. Went to VD, got 2 rocks from a goblin rockthrower, but no more. Also found a blazing potion. Descended. On VD:2 I killed a few monsters, but got hit by a rat and became sick. I was down to 3 Hp, when a skeleton appeared. I threw at it the rocks, but no damage. Tried to pray, but prayer unheard. I tried to run back to Terinyo, but found another skeleton in the corridor, so had no chance to escape. I tried to drink the blazing potion in hope of healing. It was - what a surprise - poison.
