    Default Ultra disappointment

    Hi everyone,

I finally took a character through the chaos gate! I was so excited... I had the ToRR, all the chaos items, and so on. Trident was in my right hand, crown and medal were being worn.

Then Andor said that I wasn't wearing the regalia correctly and disintegrated me instead of fighting. What happened? I left the scepter of chaos in Dwarftown, because the guidebook said I only needed the trident. Do I need to have it with me, even if I'm not wielding it? What went wrong?

    Thanks,
    Ben

Maybe a mixup between medal of chaos and amulet of chaos?

Maybe you had something in the left hand equipped? Is ToRR a one hander or two hander? (I've never had one in my possesion)

    Tridents are two-handed weapons.

Yes, I was wearing an amulet instead of the medal. Argh! That was a really stupid death.

    Thanks,

Tried again from a backup file.

I love Andor's reaction after scanning me. :-)

    Default Victory!

Well, that's that. My first avatar! Don't hate me because I backed up the save file. I only did this once, right before entering the gate. I consider it a fair (if spoiled) win.

    Some notes:

    Notes:
Probably the most helpful find in the game was a battle axe of penetration which
I was able to enchant up to +6. I used this weapon about 80% of the time. I
forget where I found it--I think it came from a gnoll vault at the bottom of the
puppy cave, but I didn't ID it right away.
I found three wishes in the game, all from rings of djinni summoning.
Used the first to save Khelevaster, the second for scrolls of danger, and
    the third for Concentration.
Found and lost three pairs of seven league boots, but kept them long enough
to clear down to L48 before day 90. Lost several scrolls of chaos resistance
in the blue dragon caves, but fortunately had good luck with dwarven mystic and
writing sets. After entering the gate and consuming all chaos resistance, I
got down to 5 corruptions; when I slew A.K., I was back up to 14 or 15.
Fortunately, I had lots of humanoid slaying and regular slaying missiles (about
50 total). The amount of ammo one can carry is frankly ridiculous.
Other notable events: cleared the bug temple for the first time ever. I never
took care of the unicorns or the quickling tree, and never even stole from a shop
because money was so plentiful. Robes of Resistance were for sale in the casino,
but that's a big yawner of an item. I didn't bother with the minotaur maze either.
Found lots of good spells in the library, including Death Ray which was a big
help on D50 for clearing the chaos wizards.
The game generated two scroll shops (both very shallow, so no help for scrolls
of danger despite clearing them repeatedly) and one book shop.
Artifacts generated but never seen: Whirlwind, Purifier, Wyrmlance, hammer of
the gods. These were probably in a greater undead vault that I mostly left alone.
For the first time ever, I got the silver key. It was my crowning gift.
The thief abilities absolutely rock. Improved pick pockets yields items much
more often than normal pick pockets, and they are more often good items. I got
a couple of potions of gain attributes and cure corruption that way, for example.

Finally, I was very suprised that PP drained so rapidly when confronting Andor. How
on earth are spellcasters supposed to deal with this? Scroll of power, cast, scroll of
power, cast, etc? Or is archery essential? HP damage was less of a big deal than I
thought it would be by this point--I only had to stop and drink potions once. It helps
that Andor didn't like to close to melee range--he preferred to throw tons of spells
to which I was mostly immune. The main challenge seems to be taking him out before
    corruption overtakes you.

    > I consider it a fair (if spoiled) win

    It's not a fair win, it's a save-scummed win.
That thief didn't win, he died. Good job on
getting it all done but the dying though : )

That's not to say that you shouldn't have save-
scummed. In fact, that's also how I got my first
win, not to mention a few others around here as
    well : )

If you want your screenshot to display properly,
just insert a {code} tag at the beginning, and
a {/code} tag at the end of the desired text.
Just replace the {'s with ['s. It will look like this:
    Code:
    ...CC/@## #..
    C##/C.#...# ##.##
    #C...#C# .. # #
    > Blessed Poisoned Bloated Burdened Berserk

Yep, that's the way I want to go out in real life.
    ... and I want the C's to represent exotic dancers : )

Don't be so hard, gut. I think it's still a fair win: "save-scumming" and "fair" are not mutually exclusive per se, in my eyes. And in the end, if Ben considers it's fair, that's all that matters.
Of course that does not mean that this thief didn't die prior to winning
Of course it's unfair - that's the whole point.

Getting the requirements wrong is still a game mistake - much like getting crushed from luggage after accidentally removing your girdle of greed instead of your armour. I myself suffered the "chaos wretch" ending after killing Andy without wielding the trident - one equipment change and it would have been my first ever victory. Well done on getting so far and all, but ultimately this is a game that requires extreme care right up to the very end.

Yeah.. most of my deaths lately are really stupid for example spitting doing too many acid spits to starvate the PC while in the quickling tree. But that's the price you pay for carelesness :P I kinda like doing speed run challenges because they are interesting to the very end and leave little margin for mistakes..
