    Default Stumbled on a new roguelike

    And it is surprisingly addictive! Called Lost Labyrinth, not sure if anyone has played it before. Its unique in that you can control a party of up to 4 adventurers. No classes, entirely skill based. The creation system is actually very robust making no 2 characters play the same. you can even choose flaws and minor flaws for extra creation points a la Fallout, such as weak fingers, can never use bows, or feeble, half movement speed. The magic system is pretty unique also and you will never be able to learn every spell in the game on a character unlike adom. it ACTUALLY reminds me of a roguelike version of might and magic, especially the the magic system in place. Here's a link if anyones interested. Its tile based, but the tiles are tasteful and not hard to look at.

    and its tons of fun making your own "classes" then saving them as templates. I admit all my classes I made were adom influenced, such as the elementalist, paladin, druid, and barbarian. But they play totally different.

    and its extremely unforgiving at times, sometimes worse than adom. Every floor of the dungeon other than floor 1 has a unique room, it can range from something nice like finding some trees that provide you with apples to eat, to a "mixed tension room" (Just calling it that so you know what i mean its actually called a monster trap) cept when you enter this games tension rooms, you get teleported to the middle of the room surrounded by monsters.

    The artwork in that game is stolen. At least I'm 99% sure he didn't
    pay for it, as there was much work from quite famous commercial
    fantasy artists in there. I doubt he spent 1000's of $ in art budget
    for a rl. To name a couple of artists' work I recognized, Darrel K. Sweet
    and Boris Vallejo. Could easily recognized more, but got annoyed and
    deleted the whole thing off my HD.

    This is why ASCII always wins. No copyrights.

    presented their work as if he did it...

    It's a damn nice game, although a few skills and builds really dominate it. And be sure to save a build with NO magic skills, or you may end up being unable to cancel those skills and thus select new ones due to a bug.

    check the documentation. Gives credit to all the graphics and sounds he used, and states if he either had permission, or if the licensing allowed its usage.

    I most certainly checked the documentation. Here is the list of all
    text files included in his distro:

    aenderungen.txt
    changelog.txt
    data.pak
    License.txt
    LiesMich.txt
    lostlaby.exe
    readme.txt

    None of those files include any credits to the artists who did
    actually paint any of those images to which I'm refering. The
    closest thing to a credit was in readme.txt file, under the
    heading of 'author':

    "
    author
    ~~~~~~
    (c) 2001-2005 Frank Malota (malota@web.de)
    homepage: http://laby.toybox.de?sprache=1
    Part of (or All) the graphic tiles used in this program is the public
    domain roguelike tileset "RLTiles".
    Some of the tiles have been modified by Frank Malota.
    You can find the original tileset at:
    http://rltiles.sf.net
    "
    As you can see, that is not a credit. In fact, it only mentions a tileset.
    Perhaps you are meaning this credit screen:
    This also does not mention the names of any artists to which I'm refering.
    It only mentions one, 'david e. gervais', of whom I don't even know. The
    credit list is basically just a list of gReetZ to his fRi3ndZ.
    These are the specific offending images:
    boris vallejo (can't remember title)
    darrel k sweet (baker's boy)
    either parkinson, or someone trying to imitate his style
    I have an impossible time believing that these images are in the public
    domain, as these are commercial pieces that are commisioned for book
    jackets. I know 'baker's boy' was a 1995 piece off the top of my head,
    so I'm pretty sure it's still even bringing in royalties. It's rather difficult
    for me to prove, I suppose, but like I said before, these aren't amatuers,
    their work is the most highly demanded in the biz, so I just don't believe
    they are free.
    I'm not on a soapbox about intelectual property rights (as it IS a free
    game). I'm complaining about lack of credits.
    > you didnt find the need to check statement.txt ?
    I didn't find 'statement.txt', as it wasn't included in the distro I DL'd (4.013c). I checked for
    newer ones and found 4.1.0, and it had the file you cited. It says this exactly:
    Code:
    graphics: some are from angband with allowance from the artist david gervais to use them for lost labyrinth
              some are from rpgmaker 2000 (http://rpg2000.4players.de/)
              some are from the rltiles page on sourceforge (http://rltiles.sf.net)
              some are drawn by Massimiliano De Ruvo (wizball72@tiscali.it)
              some are drawn by Patrik Broberg (paedie@gmail.com)
    - rltiles is for tiles. I'm not complaining about that
    - the pics by De Ruvo, Gervaise, and Broberg also don't bother me
    - rpgmaker is perhaps the offender. I found several other suspect images there (newer final fantasy
    games and diablo II spring to mind). Perhaps they are public domain, but I have doubts. I was
    unable to find the specific pics from DKS and Boris however, but like you said, it's in German. I
    google advanced searched that site, but found no mention of either artist (but then, I prolly wouldn't,
    as it's in german).
    I searched statement.txt, and all other files included in 4.1.0, and still found no credit to Darrell K.
    Sweet or Boris Vallejo. I still simply do not believe either of those highly paid artists did put their
    works in the public domain.
    well, you never know. They may have put a small amount of their work up to the public, possibly for much the same reason game developers will release the source code of their older games, or making them free to play. Appreciation to the fans.
