Default Im back + need herbs tricks discussed + advice on mid late game again

    Hi all,

I have made 2 or so threads like this since I joined a while back, I try other roguelikes but to be honest they are missing something compared to ADOM. Anyway hi again all I post another similiar thread but I see the site has heaps of spam so to be honest I think more non spam/bot posts are a good thing.

I hope all you guys are still enjoying adom. Essentially I have early game sussed out, I am about to reroll but I always get past the arena then maybe past that necromancer guy in the grave yard, next I open some chaos gate and as I get further past the gate the game seems to just out lvl my character and I kinda end up leaving the game again for a bit, I am thinking I need to learn more about how to abuse the herbs and get precrowned or crowned with decent weapons and armour for late game since I struggle so much with it. Do any of you guys have a pattern late game? What levels do you do what dungeons at and what constitutes high end gear?

Good to be on adom again and on the forums but what class this time? I liked grey elf wizard in fact its what I play best by far but what is a really epic class?

A Id-scummmer wizzie is going to need nearly nothing near end game. Furious_styles did a naked wizzie, so i think it should be definitely possible to essentially... dive with those in late game.

A really epic class is Dark elven Beasties. They have good starting PV, Good skills, excellent crowning gifts, and a nifty bonus to speed and DV.
Gray elven wizard are really a top choice if you ID-hop, never played them otherwise.
barbarians are good fighters too : what you destroyed cannot hit you back is their philosophy. Gnomish heir barbarian particularly so.
Finally, the top combo is certainly a HE archer, which kicks everybody's asses all game.

Middle difficulty combos are : gnomish healers (or trollish), gnomish/drakish bards (drakish bards are excellent if heir), any kind of paladin crowned with justifier.
    Others classes are more challenging.

Currently trying : Entertaining girlfriend. Very, Very, VERY hard.

    Just a silly online game

    Hurthling necromancer is epic!

What's not to like: Weak with low stats (ok good to, fair dex), a hobby that will get you C- very fast, a ready equipped cursed ring (probably of the fish), and a super awesome SKULL DAGGER (or maybe a wuss staff).

Well, I play them alot... They will teach you how to survive early game anyways.

How to survive early game as a hurthling necromancer:
    1. Throw rocks.
    2. If not dead, cast frost bolt.
    3. Repeat.
I said it before, and I'll say it again. If I knew scripture like you, I'd prolly be an athiest too.. -gut

Here's where my midgame gear typically comes from:
Weapon: Darkforge raid. You should be able to get all the weapon and armor here by about level 13 once you have teleport + control. If Darkforge weapon sucks, then Big Punch, RCT (if Raven) are usually suitable if nothing better turns up.
Helm: Nothing special here. Look for a helm of mental stability or an adamantium helm or something. If you end up with 4 PV, that's pretty good.
Necklace: Ankh except for special circumstances (eg. free action needed).
Armor: Mummy wrapping is usually a good staple. If you find something that's maybe [0,10] or better at Darkforge, this might be a better choice.
Girdle: Usually carrying at this point. Whatever I can find.
Shield: By the midgame, you should be able to find something like a [9,4] medium crystal shield. Rolf's shield is possible, but I don't usually bother with it (I prefer the blankets, honestly). Anything better is a bonus. I've found UD often has good shields FWIW.
Boots: 7lbs if lucky. Otherwise whatever I can find... probably speed, mithril, or adamantium if lucky.
    Gauntlets: Elemental
Rings: High kings + damage usually. Depends what I find and what I need.
Missiles: Any short bow + arrows from barbarians
    Tool: Water orb

This kit should give you ~60 DV and ~20 PV (you can get about 5-6 more from high To), which is probably enough to get you through the ToEF. Once you get to (and rob) Casino, you should be able to add maybe 5-10 more DV and PV to your kit, maybe some 7lbs or something, and should be good to go. Endgame weapon will be rune covered trident unless something really good comes along.

I typically go Darkforge raid level 13, Pyramid level 15, Griffyard the same, High Kings either just before or just after ToEF, which I'd usually do about level 19 or 20--after getting water orb. Once you're passed the ToEF, levels don't matter so much. Kill the cat lord for a couple levels. Kill AKW for a bunch more. Clear any non-undead non-D:40 or higher greater vaults, then do air and earth, then mana. You should be high 30s, maybe low 40s by this point.

Archers are the most epic class (Human, GE, HE, hurthling recommended). It's sort of like playing a regular game, except that your main weapon is a gatling gun.

    Thumbs up

    Thanks all,

Im just prepping my laptop for this years University, dual booting some stuff so I am going to have a blast of adom whilst thats happening, I kinda forgot the best early game quest order lol but I can google that, I think its something along the lines of do the elder carpenter quest then kill that rogue guy in the wilderness then do the puppy quest, I was reading about dark elven beasts btw. I am also considering archer as well now.

Cheers guys, cool to see people still playing adom after all this time.

Early quest order is whatever you want it to be. If you are born under sign of Candle, or start with Healing skill, you may wish to take druid instead of carpenter quest (especially if you start with Healing but not Herbalism). Raider quest normally needs to be completed very early if at all, since it is no longer available after level 6. If you care about the puppy coming back alive (you shouldn't), then the puppy quest needs to be done very early as well. Or you can just skip the whole Terinyo area and charge straight for the CoC (or other areas, if you know what you're doing).

As far as herbs are concerned, I'll direct you to the Guidebook page on it, which gives a really good overview (note: the Guidebook is very spoily... if you don't want to be spoiled overmuch, you may wish to avoid looking around). The most important part of herb farming (IMHO) is to get yourself a pile of morgia roots. These can train To (trains Wi too), which will increase your HP (and eventually, PV). The effect on HP is very significant--doubling your To will approximately double your HP. With a bit of effort, any character can reach at least 25 To with morgia training. This is as high as you normally need to go in practice, but there is a trick to push yourself as high as 30, and another trick can be used to bump yourself to 32.

Why? Dog gives a small L boost and some candy. Kranach is better at 3000 gold but you can get that much money killing a couple of dragons.

For no reason at all except that it's there in the game... Don't you fellas have something in ADOM you tend to do cause you just feel like doing it?
