Default Disgusting pool luck, some quests done. What now? (Dark Elf Thief)

This is a bit long, so you can just skip to the third paragraph starting with "Most recently" if you like.

Okay, so I started out with the usual routine: buy as many non-cursed large rations as I can afford from Munxip's, grab Yriggs/cute dog/Kranach quests, followed by a quick trip to Lawenilothehl for a first kill (descending order of preference: assassin, bandit, outlaw - I think I got saddled with outlaw this game, but I don't remember for sure since I forgot to note it, not thinking I would survive). After that, I like to perform a brief sortie into the Small Cave to generate the initial monsters, grab the blanket, find the staircase, grab as much swag as I find on the way, and train literacy (as an alternative to waiting for monsters to approach). I'm usually at three days once I've price-checked everything at the Black Market, so at this point I'll rush to the bottom of the Puppy Cave, finish that quest (successful this time, though Kranach was lost), finish Yriggs, then go back and clean out those two dungeons completely, and if I'm still alive somehow at that point, passing through the Small Cave a second time to explore the Unremarkable Dungeon is sure to do me in. Everything after High Mountain Village is too new for me to have a set routine. I accidentally converted myself to neutral from the alignment shifts after finishing up all those Terinyo quests, yet I somehow forgot to get Healing before I left, so I had to go back and get it after I noticed I lacked it while exploring the depths below Dwarftown >_>

Unfortunately, I didn't find any randomly generated shops, but I did find some herbs on UD 8 and some altars of each alignment between PC, VD, UD, and CoC, and I brought a blink dog corpse to the HMV shop. None of the shops had anything special, but I had some good luck otherwise - I pickpocketed a steel amulet that I blessed in case it was AoLS, which it was, and had Khelavaster snatch it away from me. I hit my first surge of power room ever this run (I vaguely remember it may have happened once before, but I didn't understand its significance then) - at first my heart leaped in anticipation the potential artifact, then leaped again when I saw that a pathetic outlaw was guarding it, then it sank when I found it was the Black Tome of Suck, then leaped again when I realized that I could use it to make !oRC to try to dip for some 7LB, which I hadn't found yet, then it sank when I realized that to get it to the Demented Ratling, I would have to eat some corruption carrying it up (even more difficult when I received my first corruption, Unholy Aura, and the purple r was right outside the shop -_- - naturally, no !oCC and I didn't want to waste my ?oCR, but at least my dark prediction scrolls became useful). I wound up using the tome to make the potions, since I hit the portal before I found the ancient scythe, and naturally, I let a lured Grey Slayer kill Ruun and then offered it straight away instead of waiting until Thrundarr got off his lever >_< In any case, I sure had a lot of fun kicking that tome over and over again. I didn't get a 7LB unfortunately, but I did get an amulet of petrification resistance, which was another thing I was trying to get. From picking up random weapons below Dwarftown when I felt like it and identifying them, I also found, among other things, a short sword of penetration, a long bow of hunting, a mithril dagger of hunting, a mithril flail of damnation (easy dooming for outlaws, frogs, giants, and boars in wilderness) and a mace of devastation. Sadly, due to forgetting to re-equip my blessed amulet of balance before consuming an undead corpse in the CoC graveyard, I went from NC to C, losing the piety I had built up for most of the game and putting off completion of the Courage Quest.

Eventually I gave up on trying to find the 7LB and went off to the Gremlin Cave, which I've cleared once before, and find fun, for some weird reason. I had plenty of spare danger scrolls, so I read one for a 75% chance of making the cave DL 8 or 9 (for =oDS), and just as importantly, 0% chance of DL >9. No =oDS in 1100+ gremlins, but I did get some other nice things, like a stethoscope and a Bracers of Toughness (To +4) to replace the one I carelessly lost earlier. Still no 7LB, which I wanted because I tend to run around in the wilderness a lot, so maybe the pools in Darkforge could help me out there? A few zaps of trap creation/teleportation later, I found no useful armor or weapons, but after offing a bunch of steel golems with construct slaying ammo and the aforementioned short sword, and slaying Kherab for his anvil and hammer, I decided to try quaffing from the pools - I discovered a whopping 15 of them (plus another in the UD)! As you may have guessed from the topic title, I had stupid pool RNG: for the measly price of 1 Charisma, I was bestowed a wish (4 7LB), see invisible, cold resistance, shock resistance, permanent invisibility, paralysis resistance, and death ray resistance, and all that with still 10 Darkforge pools remaining I didn't want to risk losing all those wonderful gains, though, so I stopped quaffing, but I read a ?oEducation to keep the RNG from going to waste, and was rewarded with Food Preservation :-D

Most recently, I've just cleared the Dwarven Graveyard (I forgot to pour water on Griff Bloodax's grave before looting it :-/), bringing along three pickaxes to make sure I wouldn't have to leave before I looted every single non-great treasures grave, and on my final pass before preparing to leave, I found a rune-covered sling - perfect, I won't get it when I am crowned. Other highlights included a ?oCR, =oSlaying and !oGA as death drops and a helm of water breathing [+0, +4] from digging, which I was planning on dipping for. My question now is, what do I do next? I've only once gotten this far before, and that character died shortly after when diving in the Blue Dragon Cave and getting one-shotted by water breath (I didn't know how dangerous they were and had almost made it out anyhow, them having missed so many times, but I definitely learned that a blessed =oFish isn't enough if you have sub-200 HP). I think that when I will continue, I will kiss every frog in sight with the Calm Monster spell, and then smith my penetrating sword, my dagger of hunting, and my heavy crossbow of accuracy, and after that I'll try the water dragon cave again (with helm of water breathing I shouldn't take as much damage from water breath, right? At least, not getting one-shotted so I have a chance to run away?). Are those good ideas? I plan on feeding the sword of Nonnak and Whirlwind to the ratling, but should I use Whirlwind before that (maybe in the water dragon cave because quarrels rust and arrows can't be recovered without angering the water dragon, but rocks are expendable)? I don't know if I will pursue an Ultra or not, but I'm trying to keep my options open. I also have spellbooks of Lightning Bolt and Lightning Ball stashed away - what is the best thing to do with them as a Thief? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here is some stuff from my log - I'm not sure what to trim, so any pointers would be helpful.

This is proof of mad ADOM skills. If you can pull this off, you are fully capable of an ultra win with this character.

Do not bother with the water cave. It is a huge unnecessary risk and a waste of time, unless you are already level 36 (so you get the reward), or unless you are desperate and out of options. Smithing isn't worth the time either, to be frank. Neither are the spellbooks or the frogs.

First off, being strained! means you are most likely carrying too many crap items. Sort them out and don't be burdened unless you have to.
The most important thing you need at this point is controlled teleportation. So eat the blink dog you stored and get the wand (although you already have the spell, having more resources doesn't hurt).
It is a good thing you forgot about courage, courage is not a great skill and for an ultra you want as little first kills as possible.
Next up, talk to Gaab'Baay and get her first quest. Then start feeding the ratling. You do not need whirlwind, just feed it. Don't worry about the little bit of corruption you get from carrying the tome, it is negligible compared to the corruption you get in the rest of the game and if you would like to remove a bad corruption you have the resources to do it. In fact, if you want to get rid of Unholy Aura right now, don't hesitate. There are more than enough SoCR available in the game. (Don't forget to get the one hidden in the HMV.)
While you're busy with the rat, finish the dwarf quests. The rewards are good and the last dwarf quest gets you another artifact for the ratling. When you're done with them and the ratling, go back to Gaab'Baay and get her next quest.

Once you have her second quest (no earlier!), convert to the alignment you want to finish the game with, wear the AMW and get crowned. It is very important that you remain at C alignment while feeding the ratling, don't make the same mistake as I did and waste your artifacts.

My list of artifacts would be:
- Black Tome
- Crown of Science
- Phial of Galadriel (even though it does have some use nowadays)
- Whirlwind
- Sword of Nonnak
- Big Punch

Once you're crowned, focus on the main quests. RoTHK, Water temple, Tower, etc etc. Ignore greater vaults, clearing them lets you spend lots of time in a highly corrupting environment and is rarely really worth it. Undead vaults should especially be avoided. The library is perhaps the only side quest worth doing, the extra SoCR are nice.

Aww, really? *embarrassed*

In all honesty, I haven't perfected the strategy, so it usually ends in an early death, especially for a race/class combination as frail as Dark Elf Thief. Candle starsign can only go so far.

Well, time is one thing I have in abundance, right? I don't think I'll hit the 90-day limit just because of that, unless there is some other negative effect of turns passing that I am not aware of. The only thing I can think of is the background corruption of Dwarftown, and my scroll of peace should take care of that. Plus, I think I have to wait for a few weeks before the next opportunity to enter the Stone Circle arrives - it's 31st day, 61st day, 91st day, etc., right?

Having previously played a good deal of NetHack and SLASH'EM before discovering ADOM, I usually try to avoid carrying lots of junk, but it seems not to so big a deal in ADOM (-5/-10/-20 Speed for Burdened/Strained/Strained! in ADOM versus -25% Speed in NetHack for merely being Burdened, not to mention speed being a complete non-issue once blessed 7LB are found), and in any case, I only carry that much when I'm ferrying vendor trash - I certainly don't try to explore uncharted territory while Strained!.

I should have been more clear: I always eat the first blink dog corpse I find, and sell only the ones after that, though of course finding more after obtaining the first one is not terribly difficult. As for the wand, I forgot to mention that I also cleaned out the DDL/VDDL, though it turned out I already had found a \oTele sometime before that. I trimmed it because it was my impression that having a \oTele by that point was more or less a given in normal runs, especially since it's guaranteed in the VDDL, a fairly tame level by the time one usually reaches it.

I already started the quest and have my +20 outlaws vanquished from Dooming + roads (hooray 90% encounter rate!), so the only thing I lost out on was actually collecting the reward. Given that, I think it's safe to assume that going back to the glade once I've converted away from Chaotic won't hurt me too much ;-)

When I said I was kicking the tome, I really meant it - I kicked it up all the way to Dwarftown, except for a brief stint in my inventory while I was rushing through the Dwarven Halls. By that time, my scroll of dark predictions told me that I was at 8%, which I decided was safe enough to use a ?oCR without wasting any portion of it (it was).

Right, my plan was to wait until I'd fed the ratling a few more artifacts so it wouldn't get blicked by the greater daemon. Now that I have the Phial of Caladriel, I think that should be enough.

Phial of Caladriel has some uses? Please enlighten me.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post with suggestions and advice!

The phial of Caladriel acts as a potion of blindness, except reusable, when thrown at a humanoid enemy. But then, so do cursed potions of invisibility (against anyone), which are not hard to manufacture.

I think the time you enter the circle is the last hour of the last day of Darknight, which comes around once every 30 days as you said. I keep forgetting if it's the 30th or 31st day, but the game will tell you if it's Darknight in the @ screen. So you enter either at 29 days, 23 hours passed or at 30 days, 23 hours passed. I think. I haven't done it in well over two years.

There is no real need for you to explore the water dragon cave, but if you do, skip the maze and any fighting and teleport straight into the item room. You can't rely on water breathing to protect you from Blastoises using Water Gun.

... All other equipment choices I can see, but why would you wear gloves of dexterity over the elemental gauntlets?

You are having carrying capacity problems, and this is why.
You have +6 St: in your pack, along with about +58 of other
stats. Players always think it will be beneficial to keep
the stats in their packs until all stats are 25, but I think
that is a bad trade. One gets to fight Yulgash with Wi:42,
but they are giving up a much more pleasant early game. No
more inventory juggling, no more being 'STRAINED!' all the
time, getting to wear armor that is useful instead of carrying
cappacity gear, less worry about special attacks and critical
hits, greater access to stat restricted talents, more DV/PV
points from To: and Dx: stats that are >19, increased LoS in
dungeons, and probably other things I'm just not remembering.

If anyone ever decides to take any bit of adom advice from me,
let it be this: USE POGA AS SOON AS YOU GET THEM!

Also, by dropping the useless armor of weight, weapons of
uselessness, and other uneeded stuffs in a stash, you can
save a few hundred more stones. Before anyone has a chance
to mention horribly inconvenient locations (propogated by
the GB) such as the mystic's room, or the inaccesible room
in the HMV (why not the stone circle, I always wondered?),
let me say that the up-stairs of D:1 is THE BEST STASH
LOCATION IN ALL OF ADOM! If anyone ever decides to take
any bit of adom advice from me, let itbe that

> heap of 5 uncursed potions of balance [20s]

On a side note (and just because I find it relaxing to
keep typing ) IMO, these are one of the most worthless
items in all of adom. Really, a means of swapping high
stats for low ones?

1. Stats are progressively harder to raise as they increase.
Trading (28 - 1) * 2 of high stats for (15 + 1) * 4 of low
stats is likely a bad trade just in itself. Between Garth,
herbs, strength training, PoGA, and other assorted means,
getting low stats to ~16 is trivial.

2. Low and high stats for each class are that way for a
reason: because it helps the PC to be powerful. Fighters
don't benefit much from Le: and Ma:, so why trade the
good stuff for it? Wizards MIGHT benefit more (comparitively)
from gaining some St: and To: points, but as mentioned in
point #1, getting ~16 is trivial, and I for one would miss
my Le:28 more than I would enjoy my To:13.

The only time I have ever had a legitimate use for PoB was
back in adom 1.0.0, when I could get Dx:99 from bugwil. You
average that into anything and you get an increase of
everything. In 1.1.1, I say PoB are only good for making
PoRC for ratling pamphlets or such.

If you plan on doing UCG, disregard grobble's advice about crowning - Khelly gives TotRR to non-chaotics only. Actually, it's a good idea to get to L+ for the whole game until final dive for UCG (especially) and Balanche avatar, since L+ gives 30% corruption reduction, while C- gives 30% more corruption.

Being a thief you'll have a huge problem with Andor Drakon - your stunning ability will make him teleport around the place. That will mean even more time and even more corruption, so make sure you have enough corruption removal.

Andor will not be a problem if you use that wand of paralyzation before you bash his head in. Bring lots of booze for it, and remember to use wands of digging to extract Andor from within a wall so you can land a hit with a wand. Not sure the thief's stunning on critical hits also works with missile attacks; the text in the manual doesn't explicitly say so, but "a good kick at the right time does wonders" implies it works in melee only. I played a thief to level 50 and gate closing, but I just plain don't remember either way.
