ADOM Guides - whatever you wanted to know about playing a certain class, but have been afraid to ask!
Check out my youtube channel to see my ADOM videos, including a completed playthrough of the game. I try to give instructions, so if you want to see some place you haven't been before and get some hints on how to deal with it, this might help! There's also some other games featured there that you might find interesting.
I guess my play style is pretty chaotic but generally effective. What I mean by chaotic is that I do things on whim. What I mean by being generally effective is my routine of using tactics and other such things.
There are many things that I don't do in a normal game, such as gremlin bombing. I usually don't restrict myself but I do avoid scummy tactics that require a lot of time from myself.
My own personal "restrictions" - really more like playstyle preferences:
1) Every game is a potential ultra, and is played as such. I'll almost always try to save Khelly, even if it means hanging out in the ID for a while.
2) Preferred first kill - an Outlaw. There's usually one in Bandittown; they're fairly rare in dungeons, but not too hard to find in the wilderness for the Courage quest. Bandits are my second choice.
3) I'm mostly lawful, in behavior if not in alignment. If I don't start with Healing, I get it by saving the carpenter, even if I started as a chaotic character. If I encounter a hostile farmer in the HMV, I just try to avoid him so I can later kill him for the old crone, rather than killing one of the friendlies in Terinyo. I basically go out of my way to try to be a nice guy, (or rather MrNiceguy.)
4) Standard starting routine: first kill in Bandittown, grab the blankie in the SMC, quick dive to PC6 to generate the Cute Dog so I can try to save him later. (MrNiceguy, remember?) Then quick dive to bottom level of either VD or DD. Lead the carpenter to the healer, or just explore the rest of the DD, whichever is appropriate.
5) For some reason, I always clean out the Gremlin Cave. Maybe I just enjoy the challenge, but I always completely explore the level, killing thousands of the little bastards, and disarm all the water traps.
6) I usually hoard my stat-raising potions till just before the Fire Temple. I use a lot of herbs and Garth training before I start with the potions.
You hear the cries of the crowd: "Freebird!! Freebird!! Freebird!!"
You play some tunes on your lute.
That's funny, my playstyle preferences are almost the exact opposite of yours.
Hoping to win with every class, doomed. Archer, Barbarian, Bard, Beastfighter, Druid, Elementalist, Farmer, Fighter, Monk, and ULE Priest down.
Similarly to MrNiceguy, I usually don't play chaotic characters, and if I roll one, I try to change the alignment to N or L asap.
I never kill shopkeepers or rob their shops in any way. I don't kill non-hostile monsters.
I just like being a good char, not a knight in a shining armor as I occasionally do chaotic things, but when I can avoid it, I will.
On the other hand I abuse Banshee in the animated forest a lot. Every time.
That is generally a source of all the items I might need - RoDs, 7LB, books, PoGA, wands, potions of water...
With the closed door square trick, it's not very tedious but requires some ID stairhopping to get a spellbook of magic lock.

Blasphemous: sorry for straying from the topic, but why did you wish for spellbooks while walking on ice?
"And light there be!"
Simple enough; he must've ran out of ice halfway through making the bridge. Maybe he mana-batteried his one wand of cold. Being pumped full of banshee items up the wazoo, he had a RoDS to spend on getting more ice. And wanting to get the most out of it, he went for spellbooks of Ice Ball in the plural. (Getting a RoDS, but no ice spellbook seems unlikely, but come to think of it, just the kind of shit the RNG would pull in preparation for a piranha death.)

I'd go to land for doing anything other than walking towards the hut to retrieve the RotHK. Paranoia does keep you alive in this game.

Excuse the thread necromancy but I only now found those posts after mine.
From what I remember, I had frost bolt but decided I might need ice ball later (probably some red dragon tension room or vault on my way to RotHK) so rather than use the frost bolt, I wished for spellbooks of ice ball to freeze more squares of the red lake AND get the useful spell... might have had 1-2 charges of the spell already from potions of wonder and when I exhausted it, naturally I had to replenish having so many RoDS...
