    Default Darkforge was a walk in the park, but ToEF is the projects.

    A level 20 GE healer with all the works. My stats were drained a bit by a few Lich Kings in melee, but I literally have 50,000,000 gold pieces so I can buy it back.

    Right now, I have only 3 of the 4 needed resistance when I put away my red sword and take out my mace of destruction to fight with, but the heat damage isn't the problem. I Don't know what it is, but I can barely touch the ACW and he started pummeling me something fierce. I was lucky that he employs red worms, through which I blasted a cone of ice and ran away invisible. I gained two new corruptions just in that fight. I used the water orb twice with the elemental gloves on so I think most of the corruption came from him.

    Speaking of those, I like my corruptions. Since I can buy back my stats, I can dig the chance to get into the quickling tree and the extra PV. I have a gelee royale packed away with the bulk of my stuff (wayyy more than what's in the file), and I think I'll run with the corrupted tissue until my first batch of scars then cure it.

    Anyway, I plowed through Darkforge without a moment of tension greater than a single critical blow that dropped me to ~115 hp. Besides that, I just lopped them all to hell. This isn't the way I thought it was supposed to be. I thought that he who bashes the golems, bashes the rest, bashes best.

    What should I do? Train stats? I'm afraid of the lower CoC right now because there's a black unicorn on DH2 and the tree have gotten really nasty. On the way down, I just plowed my way through (141 kills total), but on the second return trip, after I lost my stats, they started taking chunks out of me. I have no piety because I fed the ratling his snacks and the only non-dwarven alter is on the west side. It's nowhere near Darknight. I need high level monsters to chew on for a while.

    Any thoughts?

    Have you snipped your gear some?

    Surely you must have a couple potions of invisibility (curse them) or wonder or confusion or something. Easiest way to drop ACW is to hit him with a disabler first. Thrown potions are good. The wand of paralysis might work too. Familiar summoning scroll might help too. Sometimes you'll get a titan or ancient karmic dragon or something that will thump the ACW in 1 hit for you. If you get something vulnerable to fire, probably not so much though. The PoCC will damage him if thrown as well, and eliminate his corrupting attacks.

    Do you have any slaying arrows stashed or anything? Now would be a great time to use them. Daemon and dragon are both okay. Just go into the wilderness and fight some barbarians and bring 10 shortbows with you. As soon as one burns away, pull out a new one.

    Drop some gear and get unstrained. You have 15 speed tied up in gear and food right now.

    You can raise your To back to 30 using morgia if you want as well.

    The wand of paralyzation is an absolute beast - once it connects. Since it's a bolt, you can fire it at the wyrm without a clear path. Make sure the monster inbetween is weaksauce (like with a wand of monster creation), and you can keep trying without danger. Once it's paralyzed, just unload your mace of destruction. Poison it, too, if at all possible - why not pile it on?

    You have all the tools to turn it into a not only manageable, but comparatively easy boss battle. Fighting the wyrm straight on without using those tools was a grave mistake. (As is, in fact, fighting steel golems head-on at the stage you usually find them; if you're buff enough that you can melee steel golems, you usually have no trouble beating the wyrm - but not necessarily by simply beating it up). Running when you realized that your plan wasn't working was, in turn, very, very wise.

    Using your items smartly is easily worth as much as +20 to every stat, or more. You need to be able to finish your objective; you don't need to be able to finish your objective while meleeing everything.

    Yes, I had snipped. Or rather, I had stayed up all night and didn't think to backup the save and pick everything back up all at once. It probably took me 45 minutes just to figure out what to bring the first time.

    Inventory management has killed me before--the lack thereof, that is. That's why I went to sleep instead of playing more. Actually, I took that dumb bug bard of mine for a spin and ended up killing him by aggroing my own bug. Killed by Sam, the killer bug, it said.

    This is all of my inventory. Some of the junk like logs was in Waldenbrook's shop, but I accidentally splattered a dwarf before I went to sleep and he got mad. No one else did, though and I'm not cursed or doomed thanks to C.

    Okay, first thing you need to do is drop 538000 stones worth of stuff.

    -You have a better helmet than the one you're wearing. Equip that and drop all the rest except water breathing.
    -Drop all armor suits except mummy wrapping and equip that.
    -Drop all shields except maybe the [12,2] crystal one.
    -Drop all gauntlets except elemental and maybe a spare of thick.
    -Drop all cloaks except for one good one.
    -Drop all boots except 7lbs
    -Drop girdle of greed (do this last) and put on an eternium girdle. Drop all other girdles.
    -Drop all amulets except eye, free action, petrify, balance, light, order, {Wi +6}. If there's intrinsics you know you have or know you're missing, drop/save those.
    -Equip bracers of protection, drop the rest.
    -Drop all weapons except longsword of penetration and maybe a spare pickaxe.
    -Drop all bows except your longbow/crossbow of accuracy.
    -Drop all rocks, clubs, thrown daggers, scurgari, and any pile of non-slaying arrows smaller than 5.
    -Drop all sis, logs, ore, fletchery sets, bandages. Backup your save before you drop your ingots. You can drop at least 2, probably 3 climbing sets.
    -Drop all instruments. You don't have the music skill.
    -Drop all rings except mental stability, slaying, High Kings, damage, speed. If you have a bunch of pots of exchange, hang onto those 4 rings of stun resist too. If there's intrinsics you know you're missing, you can save those rings.
    -Drop all 0 charge wands that you have duplicates of. Drop all wands of light, ball lightning, gold detect, and any other wands you know you'll never use.
    -Bless and drink all stat boosting potions, as well as training, troll blood, raw mana. Drop useless potions like balance, boost appearance, berzio. Bless your exchange potions and dip your 4 rings of stun resist in them on D:8 and see if you can get some extra wishes.
    -Drop scrolls of amnesia, item destruction, ill fate, light, monster aggression, balance, warning, information, papyrus, dark predictions, cure blindness and anything else that looks useless.
    -Put your spellbooks somewhere safe and convenient or read them out.
    -Drop all bones and large rations. Stock up on cooked lizards if you need more food.
    -Drop all of your gold and gems. Sac a million gold and get crowned if you aren't going for an ultra.
    -Curse your potions of invisibility and throw them at the Wyrm for an easy kill.

    I would suggest dropping all of your junk gear in a wilderness square and leaving so that it is gone forever. I don't know how you can operate with that much gear. Just looking at it makes me ill.

    remove all your corruptions immediately.
    bless/drink your poga immediately.
    zap your wand of wonder immediately.
    use all scrolls of defense/protection immediately on appropriate gear (mithril girdle or higher).
    make absolutely SURE you are not doomed, immediately.

    Yay, I did it! It only took seven years too. This year is the first time I've really played without save scumming and I always got to a point where it felt too cheap to keep playing.

    So I made a dumb decision between posts. I had gone to train my climbing and detect traps since I had so much money, but I spent so much time training that by the time I left the settlement, I had just under two days until darknight. Yeah, that didn't go to well. So four blessed scrolls of chaos resistance later, I packed my stuff for a raid on the ToEF, bringing a GEE and EE with me. Halfway through the first floor, I realized that I had forgotten to remove my girdle of greed, which melted away. I was bummed because, as you know, I have a huge pile of stuff I like to carry around.

    The EE was too slow for my tastes so I left him on the third floor. To my surprise, the GEE couldn't handle the top floor's heat and his stubborn refusal to 'f'ollow cost him his life. The hall way was right in the middle top section of the screen. I had run through that hall earlier so it was full of nasties. I frost bolted them all until the ACW showed up. As it happened, there was an ignorant demon between him and me so I had the time to blast him with the wand until he finally succumbed and was paralyzed by the fourth blast. I frosted the demon, threw a potion of blidness on him for good measure, and went to town.

    Got me another orb!

    I this point, I figured I had to get myself in better standings with the men upstairs, so I hunt the old dungeons for an altar, and found a neutral in Keethrax's caves. Mine now, punk. Sacced some monsters, identified some stuff, blessed my 13 freaking potions of water, and overall settled my ruffles. I was hoping to unload some of my more difficult-to-find items off on the old hag, but she wants the boar skull first. It's kind of funny that my bard (whom I murdered this morning) found a boar and skull right outside the bug temple on a trip to reload on pets. Oh well, RIP.

    Through the fiery walls I went. Howdy, Mr. Guardian. Don't mind me; just passing through. The casino was pretty neat. It reminds me of old ZZT games if anyone remembers those. While I was down there, I found that I had stashed and re picked up a spare girdle of greed, which was amazing since i hate my carrying girdle's 13000s limit. I attempted to force a restock and make it easier to see what they had to sell despite my close attunement pulling me back to the entrance every few steps. I ended up buying magic missile and farsight most notably, although I waited until I found the shortcut to the surface to read them.

    There are some pretty crazy vaults waiting for me to finish them off. My fireproof blanket burned up in the tower along with my first pair of 7LB so the dozens of ancient red dragons is gonna have to wait. I got two levels out of them before leaving. A few levels down further, there was a mixed tension room with a doppelganger king and a titan, the latter of which gave me tons of experience.

    My favorite part comes next. After so many hours of being careful careful careful, it all pays off. "Hey guy, want this ring? I just sorta had it lying around. You can have it. Hey, you wanna look at pictures of my cats?"

    Go to hell, catman! I'm done with your foul ways!

    Anyway, now I'm pretty sure I'm above the air temple. There's an open tension room of quickling lords, each of which are worth a cool 20,000 xp. I need some ball spells to make good use of my PP, though. Also, I traded my banshee level lightning lizard corpse for death ray resistance at a pool (oh no, snakes; what ever will I do?). The banshee level was cool because I found a red dragon corpse there for some intrinsic fire resistance (before the ToEF, mind you).

    Now, I'm making a backup because dosbox started going really slow. I think I'll read some more and look into my inventory list for ideas. I have the elemental gauntlets, of course, but does one need multiple layers of shock resistance in the temple?

    This is fun again, Yay!
