    Default YAVP: Troll Bard (1.2.0p1)

This is actually my second win. I know I could have won more times, but full ADOM games tend to be too long for me... at some point either I get a busy week at work and then I don't remember the character, or I just get bored after the ToEF (the early game and the midgame up to the ToEF are my favorite parts of ADOM). So I have left several characters (mostly monks) in the deep temples, or even one in D:49, without actually finishing.

However, now I was on holiday and 1.2.0p1 was out, so it was a good time to start a serious game with the intention of playing it until the end.

The chosen character was a troll bard.

    Code:

Apart from my second win, this was also the first game where I got far with a melee char (I did use some spells, but not many). I'm bad playing melee chars, apart from them being much more difficult than characters that cast decent spells.

It's also the fifth reported win in 1.2.0, which is rather cool.

    Code:
Name: Polkan Race: male Troll Class: Bard
Eye color: brown Hair color: white Complexion: tanned
    Height: 9'1" Weight: 511 pounds
    Age: 17 (grown-up)
Star sign: Cup Birthday: 15/Cup (day 255 of the year)

    YOUR HISTORY:
Your parents belong to the lower class. They were honest
hard-working people, who did everything to enable you to live a
comfortable and fine life. They were not very successful.
As a young child you were often alone. You did not have any
friends. You do not like to remember those times. They were very sad.
During your youth you had a lot of fun playing with other kids of
your age. You always were a natural leader and the center of interest.
As a young adult you spent a lot of time searching for a deeper
meaning and purpose in your life. You pondered and pondered but nothing
truly sparked your interest. Finally, after many many hours, you made a
     decision.
You decided to become a Bard.
ADOM's overview doesn't detail exactly why Polkan decided to become a bard. The thing is that, when he was searching for a deeper meaning and purpose in his life, he met an old man who lived in a forest hut with a bunch of old books. Polkan didn't know how to read, but the man, who couldn't move much and was bored most of the day, was happy to read his books to him. One of the books was called "Guide to being a Bard, by Darren Grey". The book said that trolls were terrible bards and there was no point on a troll being a bard. This enraged Polkan, so he went to see a travelling minstrel and bashed his head against a tree until he wilfully agreed to teach him the basics of barding.

Unfortunately, while the minstrel knew a lot about music, he didn't know many of the skills some bards have, but some don't. Find weakness? No. Healing? No. Herbalism? No. Alertness? No. So Polkan turned out to be a pretty bad prepared bard. But this didn't prevent him from venturing into the Drakalor Chain, with a lust for hunting treasures.

As is always my custom, the game was played without scumming (no herb farming - in fact I never used a single morgia or moss, no pickpocket abuse, gremlin bombs, etc.)

Since 1.2.0p1 was an alpha version, I made backups along the way, but I didn't meet a single crash or bug throughout the game. I did meet some artifacts that wouldn't have been gettable before, which is cool. The game report follows in the next post.

As all my characters, Polkan started with a blanket run in the SMC, and headed directly to the UD. In UD:8, he was very lucky: he found a crown of fire and Perion's mithril plate mail.

It seems that most people consider Perion's mithril plate mail crappy. I disagree. OK, there are better artifacts, for sure. And if you get it as a paladin's crowning gift it's probably one of the worse ones you can get. But getting it in the early game with a troll bard is awesome. It provides +13 PV which is comparable to an eternium plate mail, two resistances, and it's indestructible. I actually wore it through most of the game (I got Nature's Companion much later, but I already had shock immunity and plenty of speed, so it wasn't such a big deal).

After this, he did the puppy quest. In PC:6, he found a cloak of invisibility that was extremely useful in several hard parts of the game, until it got destroyed (in the mana temple I think). The quest allowed Polkan to become neutral and get healing the lawful way (which I prefer to the chaotic one).

In a D:3 vault, he found a longsword of lightning that he used for a good while. Unfortunately, in the arena there was a cat as an opponent and no way to get rid of it without killing it. Polkan became literate with a quest to kill a goblin rockthrower. At some point (D:14), reading a blessed scroll of ID he realized that he had an (uncursed) AoLS. So he saved Khelavaster and finished the dwarf quests.

In the Griffyard, Nonnak was a quite hard opponent. Polkan made level 13 there, so the Pyramid was open. He trained with Yergius, talked to Blup's mom, talked to Blup, got the guaranteed teleport wand and climbing set, did the Pyramid (easy) and went back to the CoC. There he cleared the CoC graveyard, water temple, banshee, and got to the wall of fire. After going back to Dwarftown and identifying stuff, he realized that he had two rings of slaying, a RoDS, and a wand of frost (without charges).

Polkan used the RoDS to wish for pairs of seven league boots. He went to the TotHK, where he found another RoDS! He got the RotHK with the wand of cold (and booze), found at some point bracers of regeneration that he used during the rest of the game. He then cleared Darkforge, finding only crap. He got the Courage skill and, as a preparation for the ToEF, got back to the CoC. There, he got crowned with the boots of the divine messenger (crap!) and shock immunity. Then, he went to his stash, read a SoCR to get rid of the stiff muscles corruption that was annoying him, blessed a PoCC for the ACW, and used the RoDS to wish for rings of ice.

The ToEF was very hard. Almost everything that could go wrong went wrong. Polkan had slaying arrows, but his only bow (my mistake: I should have had him take more than one bow) burning despite the blessed ring of ice and blessed fireproof blanket. A tension room of fire giant kings was generated in the upper level, in such a position that it was impossible getting to the temple without dispatching at least some of them. This was a very slow process, and if it weren't for the bracers of regeneration I think Polkan would have fleed the ToEF and gone to the Rift or something. But he was brave. The fight with the ACW was also pretty difficult, despite a thrown PoCC, mainly because it panicked, ran and mixed with the remaining fire giant kings. But at the end, Polkan emerged victorious.

After this, he dove into the CoC. In D:26, in a greater giant vault, he found Soaker (damn) and a sword for sharpness (his weapon during the rest of the game, due to the lack of good artifact weapons). He didn't exploit the Casino too much because I don't like scumming, so he just played a bit to buy some slaying ammo (there was nothing great in the Casino anyway). In D:31, a greater fire creature vault carried Whirlwind (crap) and Nature's Companion (good but I didn't really use it, since I already had natural shock immunity and good speed). In D:34, a scroll shop was carrying a blessed SoCR which I gladly bought.

In the air temple, the summoner summoned all kinds of crap but it wasn't too difficult. The level 25 bard ability taught me Find Weakness (at last a good skill), Law and Cooking. The air temple was slower and more difficult, and an earth elemental dropped Sun's Messenger (another artifact that couldn't have been dropped in 1.1.1 IIRC).

The mana temple was very difficult. Polkan got quite a lot of corruption by fighting uber chaos servants, several stat drains from the archmage, and consumed all of his healing items. But he succeeded.

Polkan still had another RoDS (I think I forgot taking a note of where he found it, so I don't remember) but he was very low on resources (healing potions, offensive wands, etc.) after the mana temple, so he decided to do D:50 with the least effort possible, as he didn't feel powerful enough to kill all the balors. So he used the RoDS to wish for wands of destruction, went down to D:50, used a blessed SoFS to get (luckily) a greater earth elemental, cleared the sides of D:50, handled and destroyed the levers and went back up feeling victorious.

But the game wasn't over yet. Going back to DT was more exciting than it should due to scarcity of food: the poison hands corruption had made cooked lizards quite unnutritious, and Polkan didn't have thick gauntlets (my mistake, I'm sure he saw some at some point but I didn't remember they were important to keep). But he reached DT anyway, teleported to the ogre cave where he had the stash (because he had the unholy aura corruption and didn't want to annoy people), and read the two SoCRs that were left in the stash. This removed unholy aura and other corruptions, but he still was quite heavily corrupted with six corruptions left.

Unfortunately, he was level 28 so couldn't do the unicorn quest yet. But he really didn't want to go back to his place with all those nasty corruptions, he'd only be able to get chicks with his money and that wasn't good. So he decided to go deep into the ID and level (I hate this since it's quite scummy, but I really think this character deserved a good ending). Fortunately, it wasn't really necessary to level up to level 30, since in I54 he found a RoDS which he used to wish for scrolls of chaos resistance and get totally clean. He even found another RoDS on the way back, in I29 (apart from two PoGA's). He saved this last RoDS for his later life. Probably he used it to wish for potions of youth when he was getting old later on.

After that, being clean of corruption, with a lot of money and items, a wish still available, and the glory of having saved the world, Polkan returned to his place and lived a good life.

Well done! Though I thoroughly disapprove of the r/c combo :P

Are you sure? I suspect he might have used it on something more tempting.

Well done anyway, this isn't the easiest sort of melee character and that was one hell of a tower run.

This is the best staff I've ever seen, I think I would have preferred it over the sword.

Congratulations on your second win, Al-Khwarizmi, although the wand of destruction ending was quite dishonorable for you!
1 ULE, 1 UNE, 18 regular endings. Won with every race. Trying to win with every class. Never won with farmer, merchant, mindcrafter and thief.

When I first read about D:50 and the wand of destruction ending, I thought "wait, some people don't kill all the monsters on this level!?"

Yeah, in my other win I did the honourable ending, killing all the balors (in fact, all the monsters in D:50). But in this case, I thought this character was just too weak to pull that off, so I had to settle for the less honourable ending this time.

Troll bard is a pretty crappy R/C combo, as Grey's guide said. And starting without Healing, Alertness, Find Weakness, Herbalism, etc. didn't help either. Of course, I didn't play the character because I think it was any good, but just for fun. I like to roleplay and imagine my characters and a troll bard was just badass.

I was rather tempted to use it, but when I found it I was already heavily invested in swords, with Mastery or something, and using the staff meant losing quite a bit of DV from the shield boni.
