    I started this game by going through UD, picking up a very exciting mithril spear of penetration, which I decided to wield for much of the early game. Also obtained a very nice ring of teleport control. Leggot was nice enough to stock a waterproof blanket (mine had been blown apart by the first exploding door trap, of course!) and...a scroll of item detection! Next thing I did was retrieve TP wand, of course.

    Next was PC (for vault [undead], not to say dog), which is where I believe I obtained a fireproof blanket. Then it was off to druid dungeon, cleared with ease and without killing any cats. Traded in black druid corpse for a PoCC, of course.

    Due to lack of booze and not wanting to wait around scummin' it up, I headed to CoC. Ran into a few vaults, picking up a 30s pair of worn boots before DT. Eliminated a wolf for Thrundarr and picked up a few potions of booze from a shop. DH:2 was a bit hairy with an ancient red dragon I had to lure out of the down stairs room (who really didn't want to go -.-) while simultaneously avoiding a death ooze and karmic dragon (randomly found wand of digging helped a bit here). Rest of Thrundarr's quests were completed no problem. Got shield from Thrundarr and talked to Mystic to get axe, which become my new weapon set until the casino (despite its reputation, Rolf's Saviour is a pretty fantastic shield, and with Rolf's Companion gives a nice +11-+12 PV, which is pretty amazing).

    Next, I killed Hotz (amulet of order, so I could crown), cleared the dwarven graveyard, did the pyramid, and raided DFG. I managed to get a wish while pool-sipping and obtained an AoLS, which I promptly transported to Khelly. Also picked up teleportitis, so one ring slot was sacrificed for =TC for a while. I had plenty of money to crown with now, but saccing the ancient scythe on my way past didn't take me to L+, so I kept on going. Figured I'd do the water temple while I was down here, but for the infinity-time, I forgot to complete the portal quest by 'C'hatting to Thrundarr, so I had to turn back (it's like I'm retarded or something because I always forget this pretty much every time I play). Crowned on my way back with Fire immunity and boots of divine messenger, which were very nice and which I used for most of the game (both for +TCtrl and the nice intrinsics/PV).

    Since my turn count was pretty low, I decided to do ToEF. I had a ring of invis, so exploring posed no problem. I created a tunnel to ACW, but at only lvl 15, 16 Wi and no -Conf, he confused me quite easily before I could get back out. My deity, being the idiot s/he is, gifted me TWO bloody pickaxes (seriously, this is the most frustrating thing because it absolutely destroys your piety) before healing me/clearing confusion. I needed another prayer for confusion to get out, as well.

    Came back with a ring of the clear mind, blessed fireproof blanket and 6 or so disabling potions. My fireproof blanket promptly burned up less than 100 turns in on TF:2 (2000 turns with +Luck, +Fate and ankh my arse!). Luckily my disabling potions made it to the top. ACW, however, kept staggering into me and you can imagine the damage I was doing with Rolf's Companion, so I needed a bit of prayer. Due to the stupid pickaxes, this meant my inventory was quickly cursed (luckily there was nothing in my inv [having used all disabling potions], but my equipment..). Without more healing and a -50% damage penalty, I had to flee. Also cleared 3 corruptions (2 from meleeing ACW), all bad but don't remember what beyond hooves. Uncursed stuff, sacced the rest of my gold to get to inner peace and came back and destroyed ACW despite him not being disabled (needed like four more prayers, but got out alive and that's what counts!). He also gave me tough scales as my new first corruption, so I walked out of there with 54 PV. Finished ToEF around 23k turns and dove. Stupidly left corruption removal on D:1 so I had to complete the game without it.

    Forgot to trade the corpse in for a PoCC and only noticed at around water temple when it rotted to cursed, so cooked it. It would then make it to the end of my game without changing status.

    Water temple was not a problem. Bypassed EG w/ TP. Robbed the hell out of Casino. It contained a spellbook of Wish and a jet-black battle axe. All my hard work with ole Rolf's Companion pays off after all. Obtained RotMC since I hadn't killed any cats. Air Temple was done dual wielding Executor/Rolf's Companion, but after that I switched back to Executor + Rolf's Saviour. Earth Temple contained a tension room where I had to eliminate a greater moloch, and mobs from it [greater air elemental, cats] of course blocked my path back when I wanted to flee from earth elementals. Wound up fighting surrounded a couple times [with mithril spear of penetration], but didn't take too much damage. Got lvl 25 just before fighting ASB so knew I'd have a nice escape route without having to worry about eliminating too many elementals/grues. Wound up fighting ASB while completely surrounded--wasn't much trouble at all (should have used Executor here since he's a demon, but I did badly need the DV from the spear). Hostile switched my way out and proceeded to MT.

    MT was a problem as I had no source of light. Torches had been dropped before EG because I was cleaning out inventory [abysmal St for most of the game, not much carrying capacity if not wearing blessed girdle of carrying]. No amulets of light or wands of light were dropped in my entire adventure, despite having TH. I don't recall having crystals of light, but it is a possibility. Didn't have much piety after ToEF (and not enough gold to get it back on pass back through DT), so I needed to save prayer for emergencies (only have 5 PoEH and leaving my PoUH from saving Khelly on D:1, again stupidly). Wound up getting some pretty bad corruptions and having my stats drained horribly, finally winding up with Stiff Muscles before taking him out.

    D:49 had a cat on it, but luckily it was not killed by fire orb [I had taken off RotMC just in case]. D:50 was completed with hostile switching (undiggable level) and wand of destruction. Was a little tense as I went through the main room to destroy second lever. Wound up using my last PoEH to heal before destroying second lever. TP'd the hell out of there and surfaced quite fast w/ wand of TP+booze. Got to D:1 and cleared all my corruptions with the corruption removal available [sigh, I sort of despise this score boosting tactic, but boy do you get a dark ending otherwise] and left chain.

    There are some things left out--I genned a greater vault of fire creatures for instance (actually where I got my RDSM...killed a fire drake that wandered out. it lost 3 points of PV on D50) that I didn't even attempt to clear or steal artifacts from. Ring of Immunity was from ancient black dragon threat room at MT. Basically didn't use herbs for stats aside from about 6 moss and 8 morgia. Probably other little things I'm missing.

    This is both my fastest in-game run (35114, beating my previous best of 37669 with a drake barb [my last win, but not posted here because I'm lazy]) and my fastest real-time run--I did it over the course of about 9-10 hours. I hadn't intended to try to do a "speedrun" [in quotes because this is obviously only a speedrun by my standards] at the outset. I think with a little optimizing I could have easily shaved anywhere from 3k-5k turns off this run (doing ToEF right after DFG as I usually do, for instance).

    Nicely done! And I feel your pain regarding the pickaxes.

    I'm surprised that you ended up with a pretty low turncount despite not being particularly rushed. I think I might take a stab at this too. It looks like my best is somewhere in the 40s but I haven't tried for a quick win because I thought I'd have to change my gameplay a lot. But going by this, you can do it in a fairly normal game and still have room to backtrack in case of mistakes. Did you teleport a lot?

    The only real teleporting was done to get back to the surface. The only other time was to get through DH or around dangerous monsters. I did have the spellbook (from saving Khelly), but by the time my Concentration/Literacy was decent, it was pretty late in the game, so I wound up learning no spells at all.

    And, yeah, it doesn't really require too much adjustment to your playstyle to get under 40k turns pretty easily. I'd say the biggest thing I do is avoiding the Tomb of the High Kings (and that's completable in less than 2k turns or so if you try) and doing things in a more direct order (typically, I don't dive below DH except to do Thrundarr's second quest, then I do Arena/[optional dive to DT to finish Arena and last quest]/Griffyard/Pyramid/Darkforge/ToEF in one go. Despite the fact that this means doing ToEF at around level 15-16 usually (for me), and with a Wi typically in the mid-teens, it hasn't really been a problem (sword of nonnak is big help here as well [wield it before getting into melee range and while confused]). In fact, I've even done it on a drake using just first aid (idea stolen from samim) and prayers...with experience, it really becomes far less tough. (haven't died in ToEF recently, either, despite doing it at least 4 times at lvl 15. fingers crossed)

    ToEF before water orb is probably the biggest change for me. Sounds like it's going to be a very interesting run without that willpower and full healing...

    I notice you even did the druid dungeon despite minimal use of herbs and not bothering with the RotHK. Would you cut that one out too, if you decided to optimize your run a bit?

    It depends. The druid dungeon is nice because you can get a guaranteed PoCC, which is very important if your only other source of corruption removal is the HMV SoCR and the ACW corpse (and maybe SfB, depending on how you do things). If I hadn't forgotten it [and hadn't been able to save Khelly], it would have been very, very useful. It would probably be one of the first things eliminated, though, yes.

    (to note: you don't have to do the water orb after ToEF; you'll notice I could have done it before had I not forgotten to get the dwarven portal open [and in basically the exact same number of turns since the water temple was one level below the portal]. however, I generally find the ToEF is not so bad with a decent weapon [DFG] and a bit of prayer [I generally get crowned sometime before it] [prayer is for healing, 'E' + sword of Nonnak for confusion handling, which generally isn't /too/ bad--I'm not sure if I mentioned it, but I didn't even wind up using my ring of the clear mind this game]. as long as I've got 15+ Wi and am lvl 15+, I don't worry too much. definitely wouldn't try on many weaker classes, though)

    edit: also if you are a barb with vanquisher, ToEF is perma easy mode. ACW will go down in like 4-6 hits. it's so easy, disabling potions can actually make your life more complicated, depending on where you take him out!

    Yeah, barbs have a nice set of crowning gifts. But now that I say that, I'm painfully reminded of one of my dwarf barbarians who was "blessed" with Hammerhead and ended up having to bash the ACW with that.

    Also, I didn't realize how many turns were involved in the ending. My latest attempt showed up at D:50 with about 30k turns, then found he had no wand of destruction and spent a good 5k hacking through everything until corruption caught up with him. I probably should have just gone with monster creation, even if it's a cheesy way to win.

    I've read about the pickaxe problem in a few FLGs and a comic, but I never got one when praying in the temples, if I really needed something else (e.g. HP/PP very low). I must have been lucky.
