Default Trollish Bard Versus Atypical Puppy Cave Vault

Usually I get gnolls and hyenas in the Puppy Cave vault, but this time, I got wolves- the first time in scores of games.

As if the 10000 character limit isn't vicious enough:

That explains why other people's attachments seem to always be zipped. Zipped files can be up to 976.6 KB.

I rolled a random character and ended up with a trollish bard. I went through the Unremarkable Dungeon, getting a waterproof blanket in the process. After a quick stop in the High Mountain Village, I obtained the Healing skill by leading Yrrigs to Jharod. In the Village Dungeon, I converted a chaotic altar to neutral...while I was chaotic. Because of a bug, religion is broken in 1.2.0p3 unless you're lawful. I was curious what would happen if I completed both healing quests, so that's what I did. Hotzenplotz told me to visit the doctor, as usual, and when I talked to the doctor, he said that there isn't anything he could do for me. He gave a scalpel and an uncursed stethoscope.

Next, I went to the Puppy Cave and descended to the bottom. In the cavernous level, I found about two dozen blink dog corpses (though I had already eaten one much earlier in the game). The vault was full of wolves, some werewolves, and at least one werewolf lord. Before beginning to complete the vault, I met a bad omen when an orc butcher hit me for about 70 HP. After standing around for awhile, waiting for time to heal my wounds, I began to complete the vault, but I met trouble when I faced the werewolf lord. The werewolf lord was a fierce and quick opponent, and my character was too slow and stupid to deal with it.

When I finally came to my senses, I had about 12 HP, 70 speed, and my bane was one square to my left. Unless I gained a ton of HP in one turn, moved a ton of squares in one turn, or eliminated a ton of the werewolf lord's HP in one turn, I would die. The way I saw it, I had the following options:
    - Pray (risky because earlier conversions and 0 sacrifices)
    - Zap a wand
    - Drink a potion

Drinking a potion was out of a question. My most powerful identified potion was an uncursed potion of healing, which would give me 7 HP on a (very) good day, and then I would die the next turn. Drinking a random potion would have a very low chance of getting something useful, like extra healing, especially since I already had identified ultra healing.

Zapping wands would be more feasible than potion-quaffing, but still infeasible. My two identified wands were magic missile and acid. A wand of acid brought the werewolf lord down from slightly to moderately injured, so I would need something more powerful, like death ray. After looking through my inventory (after death), none of my wands would have helped.

Praying also seemed infeasible, but I didn't have much other choice. Vagrak called me a nuisance and shook the ground, causing me to lose my balance, falling right into the jaws of the werewolf lord.

After looking through my inventory, I noticed that I had an amulet of life saving! Some potential mistakes I made were:
    - carrying too much weight
    - using a quarterstaff (16 DV on normal) instead of some other weapon and a shield (31 DV on normal)
    - not blessing that potion of healing right when I saw something that might give me some trouble

The rest of this post and the next post will be the partial contents of the FLG. I will attach the full FLG.

    YOUR HISTORY:
Your parents were poor people. They loved you and cared for you,
although you had to hunger more than once.
As a child you lived through happy days. Your parents tried to ease
your life as much as possible and gave you a lot of comfort.
In your youth you worked a lot to become rich and famous later.
Consequently you rarely had enough time to play with other kids of your
     age.
As a young adult you had to work a lot to finance your
apprenticeship. You were often tired and exhausted but all this was
forgotten, when you finally achieved your goal.
You decided to become a Bard.

Congratulations on making it to HIVI. It's strange, the other day I was hoping for a stethoscope and got my head pricked in p4.

1.2.0 pre1 is the most error free version at moment, so I suggest you play that.

I can't believe you were carrying so much junk... 2 heavy and 3 light crossbows? 9 melee weapons? 1400s of LARGE RATIONS?! Look at your speed - 81, compared to 100+ on the werewolf. It was getting 5 actions to your every 4. You need to ditch the packrat mentality if you want to go against dangerous monsters.

Also keep in mind that at low HP you can switch to Coward and get a speed boost when moving. This would have let you run away and hit it from a distance with wands or arrows. Or just run away - a big part of survival is learning which fights to just skip.

Were there wolves on outer vault corners? I'm not sure I've ever seen wolf vault.
I like my women like my ADOM loot - hunted as treasure and in extra quantity.

Too bad you didn't have a source of darkness. The werewolf lord would have been a piece of cake otherwise.

Yes, there were. The open space leading into the spiral in which my PC died was a secret door. Now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever seen a vault with that physical layout in the Puppy Cave either.

I guess I was carrying slightly more than I needed to. I had 13 melee weapons, which weighed 659 stones. 490 stones of crossbows is definitely too much. I could've reduced the weight of my melee weapons to 333 stones and the weight of the crossbows to 210 stones without any disasters. To me, the food seems to be a different story, though, especially since I was a troll (and since I was strained for a large portion of the game). I was relying on cursed burb roots for satiation earlier in the game. It seems like I got hungry every 50 moves. Nevertheless, you're definitely right that I shouldn't play all of my characters as if they were merchants. At least I got rid of my 700 stones of rocks earlier!

Thanks, 1.2.0p1 does seem to be the most advantageous version when the primary goal is to avoid the manifestation of bugs.

You got hungry because you were strained. Being strained approximately doubles your food consumption rate. Being strained! as you were nearly triples it. You'd have been better off just eating the 1400s of rations until you're bloated if you could get down to Burdened or better.

Werewolf lords are very dangerous in early game. They have typical speeds of 130 or more, so you normally can't escape them even with coward speed, plus they have a lot of HP and hit very hard. If you see one in a mixed vault or tension room early on, it's probably best just to high-tail it out of there.

    On a few other notes:
-Most rings are safe to equip-ID, even if you can't ID. In the early game, the worst you'll get stuck with is a ring of the fish. Or a cursed ring of damage, but they're easy to spot because they are always onyx, adamantium, opal or ordinary. Pretty much any other ring you might as well put on. The only other dangerous rings, doom and weakness, are somewhat higher DL and very rare (and doom is usually black ring).
-Looking at your gear, I'd say you could have reduced your weapons by at least 370 stones (dropping everything except mithril and pickaxe under the assumption you might want to sell the former). 250s worth of armor to drop. 350s of crossbows. 200s of books (not useful to you right now) and moved to Burdened without any loss of effectiveness. Eat a ration or two, and you're in the clear. With 90+ food preservation, you should not have any food problems with a troll as long as you aren't too burdened. [edit]Also 160s worth of cloaks...
