    Default ME Beastfighter

    I will attempt to annotate it and such later. Suffice it to say, what you see there is not at all what I had to work with on D:50. I went in with about 30 PV or so and most of the fight I had <200 HP, with about 17 To - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7494096/no_brake_after_d50.vlg shows what I looked like after clearing D:50. At the time I cleared D:50, I was at corruption Q (and over halfway to corruption R!) with only 1 SoCR left, so it was quite the close call The whole game was quite nerve-wracking at times as well (Nuurgy fight was probably the most scared I've ever been in ADOM).

    More later, after I've had some sleep!

    edit: ah, yes, no 'unnatural' stat scumming methods, such as discovered by JS were used. I did find one pot of potential toughness, a POGA (and got POGA set from mystic), and ate Minotaur Emp corpse, though. Quite made up for it (before Nuurgy drained 3 and my corruption-riddled body took the rest!)

    Don't remember much of early game. Maxed To at 16 or so quite early, with herbs from big room.

    Pyramid & Griffyard were done at xl 13 or 14..wand for all three bosses, plus invis on top of pyramid, made it quite easy.

    TotHK was quite a close call. I didn't have -Conf, so I was confused a lot, and, of course, the skeletal king decided to blind rage, which nearly killed me multiple times. The stupid skeletal warriors weren't helping in that regard, either, since they made me a lot easier to hit when I was surrounded. Definitely going to have to start saving this for a bit later.

    The SfB was a tough son-of-a-gun. I didn't have any reliable way to kill him except for melee, so I wound up taking him to DT (still not sure why there of all places) and running around the inn, hitting him every 3-4 steps. I actually think his corpse is still in Waldy's shop...forgot to exchange it. Between water temple & SfB, I picked up a corruption--flesh of order (not bad, not bad at all).

    Next was crowning--sacced Sword of Nonnak, Moon Sickle & Big Punch, plus 100 blessed stoma [mainly for testing purposes] and 25k gold to get...the staff of Creation. Man, that was a huge let-down, considering the awesome crowning gifts to which Beastfighters have access, but it actually came quite in handy at certain points in the game.

    Next I mined/wanded out most of VDDL trying to find TP wand, but to no avail. Then came clearing DFG--not a problem even with HP in the 80s. Used First Aid a lot, so as not to waste spense (lots of pepper petal, but satiation problems). Accidentally brought a beggar [lured into wilderness after dropped booze] into my stash on D:1 causing a crash.

    Next, I cleared DFG again, to get xl 18. Found some nice armor in the armor room--two eternium ring mails. Then I explored ToEF a little. Coming back for final run, I brought in beggars (hoping ToEF would kill them and I wouldn't have to deal with their annoying wilderness messages)...another crash.

    Next, I retrieved TP wand from VDDL (not a problem since I remembered where it wasn't, this time). Then I cleared DFG again, getting xl 18; this time, nothing nice was genned in the armor room To was at 18 from potential toughness pot + morgia; visited mystic, getting PoGA set, so blessed another PoGA I'd found [or maybe Thrundarr gave], and took my To to 20.

    ToEF was surprisingly easy. Only ran into one fire giant king, and I had blessed invis pots to carry me through the temple part. Zapping a wand of cold with the staff of creation equipped managed to bring the ACW out. Confusion wasn't a problem due to the aforementioned staff. The ACW was touch and go. With 100 Alertness, I wasn't too worried about his energy rays, despite having just a little over 100 HP, but his corrupting melee attack was killer. Luckily, I got him almost to panicking with my only cursed potion of invisibility, and a few hits and an extra healing pot or two later, he was only shooting energy bolt. Traded corpse for PoCC.

    I'd initially not planned to rob Casino, but after testing revealed that all my old methods worked, I just used them. Picked up a fair bit of slaying ammo, which would come in handy throughout the rest of the game.

    Next was Air Temple, which was cleared without any trouble, as usual. The Earth Temple was quite a hassle though--I hit level 23 or so in there, so my melee attack was not very powerful yet (you most notice Mist Elf slow leveling a bit later in the game). I basically used slaying ammo, and backstepping w/ my movement reduction, to kill everything in there, including ASB. Cat lord I lured off-level and used TP + webs + humanoid slaying to dispatch. Was hoping for a big exp boost, but he only netted about 220k exp after 10 cats.

    Nuurgy was quite an epic battle. Due to various corruptions, I had to equip the Earth Orb for about 25 To--and 189 HP. Luckily, I had the very light corruption, though that's a relative "luckily"--+20 Spd, so I'm much more likely to avoid Nuurgy's DR, but -6 To, so I'm much more likely to die if hit with DR; quite the double-edged sword. After luring him out a little, I realized this was not going to work and had to hightail it out of there. He hit me once with DR, but luckily it only dropped me to 19 HP.

    I exited and did the library for the Weird Tome and to max my Literacy. Learned a bunch of spells, including the useful Invis and CLW--concentration as a racial skill is the bomb. Also had Magic Map & Stun Ray, so I knew the game was begging me to do Mino Maze. Did the Mino Maze for corpse--really needed a St/To boost, and 2 PoCCs couldn't go wrong. Of course, still used the top trap trick. This wasn't too bad, though I was terribly ill-prepared--no gold to mark hidden passageways, for instance [left entire inventory on downstairs to ML1]. This led to the hilarious occurrence of me leaving the AMW (that thing you kind of need to fight Nuurgy...) on ML6 and having to retrieve it. I'd had poison hands for a while, so I had to bring my -2 PV thick gauntlets along to pick up the potions. I didn't clear Poison Hands because I knew I'd have to poison Nuurgy, and poison always comes in handy! Quite a bad corruption from Mino Emp--I think absorb mana. Decided to clear it with PoCC....only to find that one wouldn't clear it, so I had to drink the other too, so I didn't clear poison hands. One PoCC left.

    On the way to fight Nuurgy, I pumped Wi with morgia--wound up with about 13 Wi for the fight after I got another corruption (making 6, and -2 Wi...but also +2 St, To, Dx, Ma--a pretty good trade off). With Earth Orb, I had about 220 HP, so I knew I'd be pretty okay against DR--plus, I had like 147 speed unburdened. Nuurgy was a challenge--from earlier, when I'd hit him with some humanoid slaying, he was at slightly injured. One PoCC later, he was at severely, and I could close in without worrying about corruption. Had a lot of problem damaging him for a while and was bewildered--until I saw I still had the staff of creation equipped. I'd also done this against ACW, what a dunce I am. My heart was racing extremely fast as I finally finished him off. Probably the most excited I'd ever been in ADoM.

    D:50 was next, and it wasn't /too/ bad. At first I'd thought I'd do the white necromancy + door trick [even with Ch: 1, haha], but I decided to clear it for bragging rights. I didn't think this would be possible, at first--I only had about 20 PV and mid-100s HP going in, but as time went on and I collected equipment from chaos knights, I gradually built up to about mids-30s PV. To was usually less than 20 the whole time, though. First dug into the side rooms and cleared it, and shut one lever...but not the other. Took side route into jelly room and cleared it, then started into main room. Eventually woke the balors with the noise, I guess, and they started TP'ing out. Using [demon] slaying ammo, I started to whittle down their health and then backstep/hit them barehanded, but I started picking up corruptions quite fast when they connected. Ran out of TP wand charges and exited to D:49 to try to learn TP now that concentration was maxed [hadn't been able to learn it after library with concentration in 60s]. Successful, but wound up never using it, [even though I just barely had enough PP to cast it!] because I'd forgotten I'd recently hit...32(?) and gotten hostile switching capabilities--huge, huge help. Eventually all the balors were gone and all that was left was Fisti, who easily went down to slaying ammo.

    Next, cleaned up the dregs (including the chaos mutants rooms) and closed the gate, escaping at corruption Q (and well on the way to corruption R, since when I cleared it [it was absorb mana] with my last SoCR, it didn't remove corruption P!). Visited white unicorn and left the chain.

    few comments + annotated:

    Mist Elf melee classes are very viable--especially Barbiarans and Beastfighters, who have a pretty high starting Toughness. While Candle was a nice starting month, what you really want is something like Tree--that +2 To is great (RIP ME Barb who wore one iron ring in the wilderness). Of course, Barbs do compound the slow leveling problem of mist elves, but it's not /that/ big a deal for them. Other [mostly] non-spellcasting classes to consider: Healer, Weaponsmith, perhaps Ranger/Archer, and, of course Chaos Knights [with corruption CK boost & ME boost == giant amounts of To, St, Dx]. Weaponsmith has real potential with some smithed up gear.
