    My first win, on a ratling duelist. Definitely feel like they are too strong right now.

    I'll post details (that I remember) tomorrow, but one I'll say now is that when returning the Chaos Wyrm's corpse to Guth'Alak, I accidentally pressed 'g' twice, and had a pair of gauntlets in the 'g' slot on my inventory screen. So, I lost a source of potions of cure corruption, and the unicorn quest . Kinda wish there was a dialogue to do that to friendly characters.

    +167 bonus to hit is higher than needle/sting and 99 DV very nice!

    well, I don't know when you found a long sword of penetration (and a lot of the rest of that snazzy outfit), but that certainly must have helped

    definitely not true on a Ranger (with Daggers 13), Carter. Not sure it is too true on others either.

    Those are much higher stats than I expected to see with the recent change to stat gains and potentials. That character is certainly a beast all around.

    First off congratulations on your first win.

    I agree that duelists are one of the stronger classes and don't need any further boost. But you also have been lucky with items. That sword is amazing for anyone and perfect for a duelist; preserver is arguably the second best artifact in the game.

    I don't think it's a problem having duelists be powerful - before now melee classes have generally been considered too hard in the game, so this makes for a new balance.

    I actually didn't find it until D50. I used Big Punch for probably 75% of the game. I found that sword, retreated and used all of the melee weapon buffing scrolls I had found, and that gave me the confidence to take on the Balors (fought one with Big Punch and got 2 additional corruptions from the fight). Most of the other gear I had found before d30.

    I'll start adding game details on this thread.




    Started off in small cave, going into unremarkable dungeon. Didn't find anything spectacular, but I did manage to stabilize an herb patch of morgia root/moss of marelion.
    Left High Mountain City, returned to do puppy cave and found a wand of acid, which let me kill the evil druid very easily. Learned herbalism, turned in corpse, and headed back to farm stat boosting herbs in the UD for a while. Got enough herbs to push toughness and dexterity to ~24 before leaving.
    Headed for CoC, found a neutral altar before dwarven city, and got crowned with Ironfist by sacrificing monsters over and over. By this point I had found a studded leather armor, [+0, +4] metal cap and [-1, +4] iron boots, so I was feeling pretty tough armor-wise. Was still using rapier for a weapon.
    First dwarf quest was to kill a rat, accomplished that pretty quickly. Decided I was tough enough to try dwarven halls, which was a big mistake. Found a tension room of ghosts there, nearly got aged to death fleeing to the up staircase. I never actually got my age back to normal from that, having used 4 blessed potions of youth by the end of the game and still having 5 years of unnatural aging. I don't believe I ever got hit by another ghost-type monster after that.
    So by this point I realized that I wasn't going through DH. I hadn't stabilized any spenseweed farms anywhere, so I didn't feel safe moving through the animated forest. I returned to the surface, cleared Pyramid, then scummed ID for a blink dog corpse.
    Eventually I found one, grabbed teleport wand, and crossed the animated forest and returned with teleportation. Talked to mystic and got potions of training and the ring of ice. Finished the rest of the dwarf's quests to get Big Punch, then cleared the graveyard, then went to get ring of the high kings. Inside that dungeon, I found a room of dwarven chaos knights, and found ~4 picks and 5 wands of digging. Went to the rob darkforge, found the dragon scale mail I used until the end of the game. Did tower of flame very easily with it, then started diving deeper to the casino, battle bunny room, and finally grabbed the master cat's ring. At this point, I used a blessed scroll of identification and realized that Preserver was in my inventory. I never saw any surges of power, so I guess a monster dropped it on death? I don't think I've ever seen that happen.

    Anyway, at this point, I had stiff muscles, poison hands, decaying flesh, and unholy aura, among other less disruptive corruptions. I wanted to get rid of them very badly, but had challenged the druid to a duel and the inhabitants of Terinyo were none too supportive of it. Drank all of the pools in darkforge, didn't get a wish. Dug up all of the great treasure graves in both graveyards, no wishing items (but I did find that huge strength belt). My next idea was to go train climbing with the master thief and then do the rift, but I took one step into the town and pissed off the shopkeeper with my unholy aura, and then decided to back out lest I risk scaring the thief too and potentially losing out on easy climbing 100.

    This next part was by far the hardest part of the game for me: clearing the bug cave with all of those nasty corruptions. Fighting them in melee resulted in me getting competely mauled, but I still had extreme movement speed to due the fragile stilts corruption, and I had a stack of ~300 arrows, so being as careful as I could possibly be, I killed nearly all of the killer bugs with berserk bow attacks, and meleeing them, switching to berserk in the turns they wouldn't attack me, and coward to the turns they probably would. Got the scrolls of chaos resistance, and removed all of those nasty corruptions, trained climbing to 100 with the master thief, then fell once in the rift and lost that huge stack of arrows I had farmed. Went through rift, got the scrolls, then was determined to finish the game before I was overwhelmed by my lack of corruption curing items. After this the game was pretty straightforward, finish before I was corrupted to death. Got all the orbs, found crown of leadership and death's blade in a greater vault, never found a potion of uselessness so no artifact on D49. Clearing all of the chaos monsters on D50, I found that eternium longsword of penetration that I promptly switched to. Fought my way to the levers, closed them, and destroyed them with wands of destruction, then pissed off the balors somehow and fought them. On my way out, I finally found a wand of wishing, but with the mana battery corruption, could only get one use out of it. Wished for SoCR to boost my score a little bit, then left to begin my life of loneliness .


    All in all, even if duelists are overpowered, and I found tons of good equipment to use, it doesn't make my first win any less satisfying.

    Oh, I completely misread before: congratulations on your first win, as well, Mekran! That's very exciting, and definitely something to be proud of any way you look at it (especially since it's on a melee class).

    I'm not sure duelists are overpowered (as a melee class). Sometimes classes just mesh with people's playing styles, other times they don't (stupid Barbarians). Of course, I haven't made it to CoC yet with my ratling duelist, so I could be completely wrong
