Default Post your ADOM habits here

Hello board. In this thread, list/confess your habits and/or knowledge gaps when it comes to ADOM.

    - I will restart the game until I get Raven (hurthling archer), Sword (mist elven duelist), Candle (anything).
    - I never play chaotic style, I ran a Chaos Knight for kicks and found it confusing. I don't dig graves, I've never killed Jharod, I don't even know how to shoplift.
    - I never search for Kranach, I always map the SMC very first thing, then I always speed-dive for the puppy.
    - I always try for one pre-crown. I never get crowned in case I want to try for an ultra.
    - I never visit the ID.
    - I never did a gremlin bomb, mostly because I don't know how to "run a script".
    - For that matter, I don't know where my memorial files are kept (I'm playing on OSX), I don't know how to post a YASD or YAVP.
    - I don't know how to save-scum, but save-scumming ruined Nethack for me so I've deliberately stayed ignorant.
    - I always die in the save five ways. Early game: fire trap or stone block, spider poisoning, face Keethrax too early. Late game: acid vortex or master mimic.

    -I never play stunties (dwarfes)
-I always try and save the puppy simply because I feel bad otherwise
-I always Crown by using live-sacrifices even when stomofilla worked
-I have started to take Treasure hunter on every char recently
-I always take Quick, very quick and Greased Lightning if possible

    - I always try to win the game in one evening and always fail
    - I always take Alert even if don't need TH
    - I don't play chars with no Food Preservation
    - I always rescue the puppy at the end of the game (cute dog wish) or never do it at all
    - I never play casters but try to recharge wand of wonder as long as I can
    - I avoid fast levelling
    - I always pacify Big Room even when there is no need
    - I rob Leggot for money, eat Oracle and crown/precrown at the same time
    - I don't fight on D:50 if possible
Elven wizards for bird's-eye, drakeling monks for samoorai, archers for getting bored, orcish barbs for kill them all.

    - I tend to make characters that are doomed to fail but take them through the UD anyway
    - I've cleared D:50 with both characters that I won the game with
    - I've never robbed a shop
    - I usually never visit the ID unless I start the game there
    - Until the new races 90% of my characters were dwarves or gnomes
    - I never play chaotics

Off the top of my head:

    * I use the starsign selector program, since I don't like rerolling until I get the one I want
    * I play dark elf wizards most of the time. I know very little about how to play other R/C combos.
    * I think C is the best alignment in the game, since it lets me pickpocket, dig graves, and kill anyone I want.
    * I try to minimize the time spent in the wilderness as much as possible, limiting backtracking and sometimes checking the GB's map of the Drakalor Chain to see what the quickest route from A to B is. Other than that, I take my time with the game, and usually explore all levels from top to bottom.
    * If I started with a book of Magic Missile or Acid Bolt, or the equivalent wands, chances are I will try killing Keethrax.
    * The puppy is left for a later visit 90% of the time.
    * If I can find Kranach I will try to kill him, otherwise I won't waste time trekking through the wilderness.
    * If I can stabilize a patch of stomafillia, or happen to delve into the Puppy Cave first and generate an altar in the 5th level (rare), I will try a precrown. If I get something awesome, I might go for a second one.
    * I used to spend a lot of time in the ID to gain levels and get items. Now I go straight to the SMC, get the blanket, then descend through the UD.
    * I've never done a gremlin bomb, excepting a couple which started accidentally (randomly spawned gremlin + water trap) and left me with no choice but to dispatch the gremlins to continue. I've never stairhopped, a bit boring for my taste, not enough to warrant having removed it from the game though. I've only taken the banshee to the animated forest once or twice, to see by myself how powerful the tactic was, but never did it in a "real" game. I've started a few wish engines, they're awesome if you can get them rolling. Starvation training I use all the time. In 1.1.1 I dragon-doubled gold a lot (to the point one of my PCs had to manage multiple 2-billion gp stacks), kick-robbed every time I could, and tried piety overflow once, which was too much of a hassle for little gain.
    * I'm a massive packrat. You wouldn't believe all the crap my PCs tend to carry once they have SoA.
    * I've found myself going from not bothering with TH to always taking it, since the drop boost effect on vaults and tension rooms is noticeable.
    * I like to completely clear the temples and D: 50 - never understood the wand of destruction ending (initial reaction when reading about it: "some people don't clear the level!?").
    "And light there be!"

    - 95% of time I play dark elves, 4% of the time humans, 0,9% orcs, 0,01% drakes.
    - I almost always go through SMC and UD.
    - I always do a precrowning, and sometimes do two unless the first altar found was in Dwarftown.
    - I visit UD, Puppy Cave, Piramid and even Darkforge before CoC most of the time.
    - I take TH always. Yes, tension rooms of rats are my reason.
    - I try my best to avoid killing cats, and succeeded twice already.
    - I always do Bug temple before ToEF.
    - I kill Water Dragon if I have darkness and paralizaion.
    - I never have problems in Tower and misunderstand how can it be a problem at all... wait... oh shi... is that because I don't play drakelings?
    - Half of the game I am always a chaotic bastard, the second half depends.
    - I scum with herbs and will scum until the official 1.2.0 release (up to 32 To and Wi and 40 Dx). On the other hand, I almost never visit ID.
I'm going to win with Dark Elves of all classes.
Mindcrafter, Necromancer, Beastfighter, ULE Archer, UNE Barbarian done.

    - I always ruin one potion of cure corruption with poison hands
    - I always grab blanket and shield from SMC, and then dive if the character has the healing skill, if not, revisit afterwards with a potion of invis to get to the stairs quickly
    - I never bother to save the dog in time, because it always dies to a trap when I rush, or gets seperated by a spider/rat factory
    - I never rob shops, the water dragon's lair, or kill any friendly named NPCs
    - I always manage to not kill cats (myself), giving every character who clears ToEF the artifact ring
    - I never browse casino, or play the slot machines
    - I get beast of burden on every character after treasure hunter and long stride, because I am a huge packrat
    - I never use or equip the chaos orbs, because I always play games very slowly and have problems with corruption
    - I farm lots of stomfillia, and then end up eating ratling vendor food all game anyway
    - I never crown off of live sac or precrown, because I have no patience

I was under the impression you have to actually 'U'se the chaos orbs to get corruption. Equipping them should be safe.

You still get some corruption for having them in your inventory
Maybe I should reexamine some of my habits in this game.

I always start the same way: go to Terinyo, get quests, talk to Yggaz, "organize" Munxip's shop, buy rations; then go to Lawenilothl, check out the shop, get pick pockets if applicable, kill a single monster as a first kill, even though I don't usually like going for ultras and don't get the Courage skill. I kill an outlaw or bandit depending on how tough my character is. If I have an offensive spell I'll consider taking on an outlaw leader. Then I go to the SMC. I try to get to lvl 4, find the blanket and the stairs. If I think I can make it through again later, I'll leave and come back, otherwise I'll descend. I always visit the UD. I also take the Kranach quest but don't spend any additional time trying to find him - if he finds me, I'll try to give him a piece of my mind.

If I leave, I'll try the puppy, then the village or druid dungeon. If I find I'm getting my ass handed to me in the PC I'll leave and invert the order. Getting acid resist from the ants is very handy for the giant slugs at the bottom of the DD. After these quests are done I'll try killing Hotz if I'm level 10 and it doesn't sound like suicide. If I succeed and I also became a member of the guild, I'll buy detect traps. Unless I really need any other skill later on, I won't come back to this area until I need PoCC.

After this I visit the UD if I haven't already. Upon emerging, if I'm level 13 already and feel confident, I like to do the pyramid before the CoC, even though with the recent change to Thrundarr's first quest I might save it for after he gives it, since the top level of the pyramid is good for mid rarity monsters. I just realized this is another thing I find annoying about the change to Thrundarr's first quest.

That's my early game. I'll post other stuff when I think of it. I guess this is why I like chaos knights so much - they spice up my early game by making it completely different. The early game is fun.
